The whole farm was deeply divided on the subject of the windmill. Snowball did not deny that to build it would be a difficult business. Stone would have to be quarried and built up into walls, then the sails would have to be made and after that there would be need for dynamos and cables. (How these were to be procured Snowball did not say.) But he maintained that it could all be done in a year. And thereafter, he declared, so much labour would be saved that the animals would only need to work three days a week. Napoleon, on the other hand, argued that the great need of the moment was to increase food production, and that if they wasted time on the windmill they would all starve to death. The animals formed themselves into two factions under the slogans, 'Vote for Snowball and the three-day week' and 'Vote for Napoleon and the full manger.' Benjamin was the only animal who did not side with either faction. He refused to believe either that food would become more plentiful or that the windmill would save work. Windmill or no windmill, he said, life would go on as it had always gone―that is, badly. 〈George Orwell, Animal Farm〉

풍차 문제에 관해서 전 농장이 깊이 분열해 있었다. Snowball은 풍차 건설이 매우 어려운 사업이라는 것을 부인하지는 않았다. 돌을 채석하여 벽을 건설하여야 하고 풍차 날개도 만들어야 할 것이고 그 다음에는 발전기와 전선도 필요할 것이다. (이것들을 어떻게 구입할지에 대해서는 Snowball은 말하지 않았다.) 그러나 그는 이 모든 것을 1년 이내에 할 수 있다고 주장하였다. 그리고 그 후에는 너무나 많은 노동력이 절약될 수 있기 때문에 동물들은 1주에 3일만 일하게 될 것이라고 그는 선언하였다. 반대로 Napoleon은 현재에 가장 필요한 것은 식량 생산을 증가시키는 것이고 만약 그들이 풍차에 시간을 낭비하면 동물들은 모두 굶어 죽을 것이라고 주장하였다. 동물들은 'Snowball에게 투표하여 3일만 일하는 주'라는 슬로건과 'Napoleon에 투표하여 가득찬 여물통' 슬로건을 지지하는 두 개의 파당을 형성하였다. Benjamin은 어느 당에도 가담하지 않는 유일한 동물이었다. 그는 식량이 더 풍부해 진다거나 풍차가 노동을 절약해 줄 것이라는 것 어느 쪽도 믿기를 거부하였다. 풍차가 있든 없든 이전과 똑같이 ―즉 나쁘게―계속될 것이라고 말하곤 하였다.

*해설:

Napoleon은 1월의 대학살을 통해 동물농장을 공포의 지옥으로 변형시켰다. 그는 아홉 마리의 호위 맹견을 대동하고 나타나서 동물농장 동물 전원이 보는 앞에서 일요회의 폐지에 반대하였던 네 마리의 젊은 돼지를 Snowball의 첩자라고 자아 비판시키고는 무참하게 학살하였다. 이어서 그는 세 마리의 닭, 한 마리의 거위, 양 두 마리를 자아 비판시키고는 모두 즉석에서 처형하였다. 자아비판과 처형은 "....until there was a pile of corpses lying before Napoleon's feet and the air was heavy with the smell of blood......(나폴레온의 발 앞에 시체더미가 쌓이고 공기가 피 냄새로 가득할 때까지)" 계속되었다.
