At the end of the big barn, on a sort of raised platform, Major was already ensconced on his bed of straw, under a lantern which hung from a beam. He was twelve years old and had already grown rather stout, but he was still a majestic-looking pig, with a wise and benevolent appearance in spite of the fact that his tushes had never been cut. Before long the other animals began to arrive and make themselves comfortable after their different fashions. First came the three dogs, Bluebell, Jessie and Pincher, and then the pigs, who settled down in the straw immediately in front of the platform. The hens perched themselves on the window-sills, the pigeons fluttered up to the rafters, the sheep and cows lay down behind the pigs and began to chew the cud. The two cart-horses, Boxer and Clover, came in together, walking very slowly and setting down their vast hairy hoofs with great care lest there should be some small animal concealed in the straw. Clover was a stout motherly mare approaching middle life, who had never quite got her figure back after her fourth foal. Boxer was an enormous beast, nearly eighteen hands high, and as strong as any two ordinary horses together. A white stripe down his nose gave him somewhat stupid appearance, and in fact he was not of first-rate intelligence, but he was universally respected for his steadiness of character and tremendous powers of work. Major는 큰 창고의 끝부분에 있는 약간 높은 연단 위에, 들보에 걸려 있는 등불 아래 짚으로 만든 침상 위에, 벌써 앉아 있었다. 그는 12세였고 이미 살이 쪄 있었지만 송곳니를 한 번도 잘라낸 적이 없다는 사실에도 불구하고 지혜롭고 인자한 모습을 가진, 아직도 위엄 있게 보이는 돼지였다. 얼마 지나지 않아서 다른 동물들도 도착하여 각자의 방식에 따라 편안하게 자리를 잡았다. 먼저 세 마리의 개들인 Bluebell와 Jessie와 Pincher와 그리고 돼지들이 들어와서 연단 바로 앞 밀짚 속에 자리를 잡았다. 암탉들은 창문 문지방 횃대에 앉았고 비둘기들은 서까래 위로 날라 갔고 양들과 암소들은 돼지들 뒤에 누워서 새김질을 시작하였다. 두 마리의 짐마차 말들인 Boxer와 Clover가 함께 들어와서 천천히 걸으면서 밀짚 속에 숨겨진 어떤 작은 동물이 있지 않도록 매우 조심스럽게 그들의 커다란 털 말굽을 조정하면서 자리를 잡고 있었다. Clover는 중년에 가까운 튼튼하고 모성애가 많은 암말로서 네 번째 망아지를 낳은 후로 원래의 모습을 결코 가지지 못하였다. Boxer는 키가 거의 손바닥 18뼘만큼 큰, 거대한 짐승으로 보통 말 두 마리를 합친 만큼 힘이 세었다. 그의 아래로 코까지 나 있는 하얀 줄은 다소 둔한 모습을 주고 실제로 그는 일급 지능의 소유자는 아니지만 그의 견실한 성품과 엄청난 작업 능력 때문에 널리 존경을 받고 있었다. 말 다음에 하얀 염소 Muriel과 당나귀 Benjamin이 들어 왔다. Benjamin은 농장에서 가장 나이가 많았고 성질이 가장 고약하였다.

*해설:

관념적이고 비현실적인 사상은 그것이 아무리 고상하고 이상적일지라도 거부하여야 한다는 것이 Orwell의 생각이다. 이런 의미에서 무저항 독립운동가로서 성인으로 칭송받고 있는 Gandhi도 Orwell의 비판의 대상이 되었다. Orwell은 Gandhi의 聖者(성자)의 이상을 (성인이 되기를 갈망하는 사람은 인간이 되고픈 유혹을 결코 느껴보지 못한다면서) 非인간적이라며 비판하였다. 간디의 무저항주의도 영국같은 민주주의 정권하에서나 가능한 방법이며 나치스 독일이나 소련같은 전체주의 국가에서는 전혀 효력이 없을 뿐더러 항의시위에 참여하는 자들은 가차 없이 처형당할 것이다. 그러나 Orwell은 증오와 권력에 대한 탐욕으로 오염되지 않고 순수한 정치투쟁의 이상을 실천한 간디의 숭고한 인격은 높이 평가하였다.
