인공지능(AI) 챗봇인 챗GPT에 대한 기사가 연일 쏟아지고 있다. 마이크로소프트 창업자인 빌 게이츠는 챗GPT의 개발이, “인터넷 발명만큼 중대한 사건”이라고 했다. 챗GPT가 써낸 답안이 미국 대학교 시험을 통과하는 수준에 이르렀다고도 한다. 미 펜실베이니아대 와튼스쿨의 한 교수가 경영대학원(MBA) 과정 필수 과목 기말 시험을 챗GPT에게 치르게 했더니 B 또는 B- 학점을 받았다고 한다. 미네소타대 로스쿨 교수들의 경우는 기말 시험을 챗GPT에게 치르게 했는데 C+ 학점을 받았다고 한다. 

나는 처음 이런 기사를 읽고 난 뒤에는 말도 안 되는 이야기라고 생각했다. 컴퓨터가 아무리 똑똑하다고 하더라도 정확한 답변을 내놓을 수는 없다고 봤다. 인터넷 고객상담센터 로봇채팅 수준 정도 아니겠느냐는 생각이었다. 

나는 약 2년간 미확인비행물체(UFO)에 대한 취재를 했고 이에 대한 책을 한 편 썼다. 호기심에 인공지능과 한 번 대화를 나눠보고자 했는데 나는 솔직히 조금 충격을 받았다. 

나는 우선 대화의 시작을, ‘UFO는 존재하는가(Does UFO exist)?’라는 질문으로 했다. 그러자 한 3초나 걸렸을까, 네 문단으로 구성된 답변이 들어왔다. 우선 “AI 모델로서 개인적인 의견은 없다”더니 “하지만 이 주제와 관련한 몇 가지 사실들을 알려줄 수 있다”고 했다. (대화 문답 전문은 기사 하단에 소개한다.)

UFO가 확인이 되지 않는 비행물체를 의미한다고 한 뒤 이런 보고 사례는 많다고 했다. 하지만 UFO가 외계에서 왔다는 것이 증명된 적은 없다고 했다. 대다수의 보고 사례는 자연 현상을 착각한 것, 거짓말, 일반적인 물체를 오판한 것이라고 했다. 그럼에도 일부 보고 사례에 대해서는 설명이 되지 않는다면서도 외계인들이 이런 ‘비행접시’를 타고 지구를 방문하고 있다는 과학적 증거는 없다고 했다. 

챗GPT는 “특정 물체가 무엇인지 확인되지 않았다고 해서 이것이 외계에서 왔다거나 외계 생명체의 존재에 대한 증거가 되지 않는다는 것을 알 필요가 있다”고 했다. 

나는 두 번째 질문을 했다. “그렇다면 왜 미국 정부가 미확인항공현상(UAP)은 ‘물체다’라는 판단을 내렸다고 생각하느냐”고 물었다. 이 로봇은 또 순식간에 장문의 답변을 내놨다. 

챗GPT는 우선 최근 들어 UFO라는 표현 대신 UAP라는 표현이 사용되고 있다며 이에 대한 배경 설명을 내놨다. 그런 뒤, 군 관계자를 비롯한 신뢰도 있는 증인들이 이런 현상을 목격했다고 보고하고 있다고 했다. 기존에 알고 있는 비행물체나 자연현상으로는 설명할 수 없는 “고도화된 역량과 행동을 보여준다”는 내용의 보고라고 했다. 

챗GPT는 2021년 6월, 미국 국가정보국장실이 UAP 보고서를 발표했고, 이런 현상은 ‘물체다’라고 인정했다는 사실을 설명했다. 이어 “하지만 이것이 UAP가 외계에서 왔다는 것을 확인하는 것은 아니라는 점을 명심할 필요가 있다”며 “미국 정부는 이런 주장(외계 기원설)을 뒷받침할 어떤 증거도 제시하지 않았다”고 했다. 

챗GPT는 ‘물체’라고 한 발언은 “현 상황에서 무엇인지 특정할 수 없는 물체가 존재한다는 뜻이고 이에 대한 추가 조사가 필요하다고 한 것에 불과하다”고 했다. 이어 “UAP와 이의 역량에 대해 더 이해를 할 필요가 있다는 데 있어 큰 진전을 이뤄낸 것은 맞지만 이런 물체들이 무엇인지, 그리고 어디에서 왔는지를 말하는 것은 시기상조다”라고 했다. 

나는 세 번째 질문을 했다. “그렇다면 해군 조종사를 비롯한 미군 관계자들이 왜 이렇게 많이 이런 사례를 보고하겠는가, 이들에게 거짓말할 이유는 없지 않는가”라고 물었다. 또 순식간에 네 문단 분량의 답이 들어왔다. 

챗GPT는 “당신의 말이 맞다, 군 관계자 및 조종사들을 비롯한 많은 사람들이 UAP를 봤다고 보고하고 있다”며 “이런 보고들은 때론 구체적이었고 일부는 신뢰도가 있는 증인으로부터 나왔다”고 했다. “이로 인해 많은 사람들은 이런 목격 사례에 무언가가 있다고 믿게 됐다”고 했다. 

그런 뒤 역시 자기가 하고 싶은 말을 이어가는데 어떤 UFO 회의론자보다 차분하고 논리적이었다. 챗GPT는 “하지만 목격자들의 증언은 스트레스와 관점, 기억 등 여러 요소에 의해 영향을 받았을 수 있다”며 “일반적인 물체를 잘못 인식한 것이 상당수의 UFO 목격 사례의 원인이었다”고 했다. “군대는 일부 UAP 목격 사례는 무인기 및 군 항공기 등 고도화된 기술 등으로 설명이 된다”는 입장을 밝히기도 했다고 했다. 

챗GPT는 ‘집단적 히스테리 현상’이 UFO 목격 사례에 영향을 끼쳤을 수도 있다고 했다. 다른 사람들의 목격 사례, 혹은 대중문화의 영향을 받아 자신 역시 무언가 특이한 것을 봤다고 믿을 수 있다는 것이었다. 

챗GPT는 “미군이 UAP가 외계에서 왔다는 것을 공식적으로 인정하지 않았다는 점을 상기할 필요가 있다”고 했다. “미국 정부는 이런 목격 사례를 진지하게 받아들이고 있고 UAP의 본질과 기원을 이해하기 위해 더욱 노력하고 있다”면서도 “더 구체적인 증거가 확인될 때까지 이런 목격 사례에 대한 해답은 추측과 논쟁의 주제로 남을 것이다”라고 했다. 

나는 우선 여기까지 질문을 한 뒤 멈추기로 했다. 질문을 조금 더 정리해 제대로 다시 이야기를 나눠볼 계획이다. 나는 여태까지 여러 UFO 관련 전문가를 만나 인터뷰도 하고 이야기를 나눠봤다. 모든 사안이 그렇겠지만 UFO 전문가들은 확신하는 부류, 무언가 있다는 부류, 사기극이라는 부류로 나뉜다. 이 챗GPT가 어떻게 학습을 한 것인지 모르겠지만 그는 이 세 부류 모두에 해당되지 않았다. 그런데 내가 한 가지 놀란 점은, 앞서 언급한 세 부류 모두가 기분 나빠하지 않을 답변을 계속 내놓는다는 것이다. 아무리 대화를 해도 설득을 시킬 수 없을 것 같은 ‘벽’처럼 느껴져 조금 무섭기도 했다. 

계속해 UFO에 대한 보다 고차원적인 현상을 중심으로 대화를 나눠볼 계획이다.
