얼마 전에 방콕 시내에서 버스를 탈 일이 있었다. 방콕에는 시내버스도 다양하다. 에어컨을 설치한 고급스러운 버스가 있는가 하면 곧 폐차장(廢車場)에 갈 운명의 버스도 있다. 물론 요금도 다양하다. 나는 에어컨이 있는 버스를 탔다. 얼마쯤 갔을까, 내 앞에 앉아 있던 노인이 웬일인지 버스의 창문을 열었다. 그때 맞은편에 앉아 있던 아가씨가 그 노인을 보고 화난 얼굴로 나무라듯이 꾸짖었다. 다른 승객들은 관심이 없는 듯 쳐다보지도 않았다.

노인은 마치 죄지은 사람처럼 꼼짝 않고 그 아가씨의 꾸중을 듣고만 있었다. 그 노인은 두 정거장을 지난 뒤 창문을 닫고 조용히 하차했다. 그 아가씨 역시 별일 없었다는 듯이 조용했다. 나는 너무나 궁금했다. 마침 그 아가씨 옆자리가 비어서 내가 그쪽에 앉았다. 그리고 나는 그 아가씨에게 물었다. 실례지만, 내가 태국어를 몰라서 그러는데, 아까 그 노인에게 당신은 매우 화가 난 표정으로 꾸짖듯이 말했다. 그리고 그 노인은 아무 말도 없이 내렸다. 혹시 무슨 일인지 말해줄 수 있느냐고 했다.

그 아가씨는 아까와는 완전히 다른 태도로 아주 친절하게 내게 말했다. “그 노인은 기본 예의가 없어요. 에어컨 버스 창문을 열면 안 되지요. 왜냐면 그런 행동은 버스 요금을 더 내고 에어컨 버스를 탄 사람을 무시한 행동이기 때문입니다. 그래서 내가 그런 예의 없는 행동을 하면 남에게 불편과 손해를 끼치니까 당장 그 문을 닫으라고 한 거에요. 그런데도 그 노인은 자기가 내릴 때까지 계속 창문을 안 닫고 있었어요. 아주 무식(無識)하고 못된 노인이에요.” 혹시 그분이 멀미한다거나 개인적 문제가 있어서 그런 게 아니겠냐고 했더니 이 아가씨는 그럴 리가 없다는 것이다. 만약 그렇다면 왜 말을 안 하겠느냐고 나에게 반박(反駁)을 하듯이 대했다.

한마디로 세상이 바뀐 것이다. 세월의 흐름이 너무 빠른 걸까, 노인 세대가 쫓아가기엔 벅찬 것 같다. 미소(微笑)의 나라인 태국에서도 이런 모습을 보게 될 줄은 미처 몰랐다. 착각은 자유라더니…

A few days ago, I had to take a bus in downtown Bangkok. There are various city buses in Bangkok. There are luxury buses with air conditioners, while there are junk buses destined to go to the junkyard soon. Of course, the rates vary. I took a bus with air conditioning. At a certain place, the old man sitting in front of me opened the window of the bus. At that time, the lady sitting opposite saw the old man and scolded him with an angry face. Other passengers didn't even look at it as if they weren't interested.

The old man remained motionless as if he had sinned. After two stops, the old man closed the window and got off quietly. The lady, too, was quiet as if nothing had happened.

I was so curious that I moved the seat next to the lady. And I asked her. "Excuse me, I don't know Thai but I wonder why you scolded the old man with a very angry look on your face. And the old man got off without a word." I asked if she could tell me what happened.

The lady spoke to me very kindly in a completely different manner. She said, "The old man has no basic manners. Very rude. He shouldn't have opened the air conditioning bus window. It's because such behavior is ignoring the persons on the air conditioner bus by paying more for the bus. That's why I told him to close the door immediately because if you act rudely like that, it will cause inconvenience and damage to others. Nevertheless, as you saw him, the old man kept the window open until he got off. He's nothing but a very ignorant and mean old man." I asked her if it was because he was carsick or had a personal problem. Then she said, "It couldn't be. No way. If so, why not he said nothing to me?"

I was also in the elderly generation, so when I heard it, I felt embarrassed and also angry at those wild young guys. Well, I thought about whether she could treat an old man like her father so recklessly, but soon I changed my mind. If it happened in Seoul, it wouldn't be less.

In short, the world has already changed. Amazing! So fast time flies for an elderly generation like me to follow. Well, I didn't expect to see this happening in Bangkok, a country of smile. Made me feel I was in a illusion.
