People Met on My backpacking135 - living in a new hi-tech era

.

We are in Pattaya now. There's a paid water purifier around the hotel where we are staying. I haven't seen it in other countries as well as Korea yet. 1 baht per liter (10 baht at convenience store, 1 baht = 4Cents,) I sometimes saw people getting water in front of paid water purifiers installed on the street when I passed by train in Thailand. But it's the first time I've actually used a street water purifier. It turned out to be useful.

.

Most of the guests at this hotel, including us, are foreign travelers. Most of them are retired Western seniors. There are also various nationalities. Since it's an inexpensive hotel, there are many long-term residents who stay for more than a month. I find that their jobs are diverse. Businessmen, lawyers, educators, soldiers, ordinary office workers, etc. As I often feel that they are just ordinary people like me and retirees who enjoy traveling around the world and talking to people regardless of their former jobs. So I can be a friend of them without any prejudice. I think it's one of the big differences between East and West cultures.

.

One morning, I was in the elevator of the hotel and saw a gentleman holding an empty 5-liter water bottle. Asked him because I was curious. "what do you use it for? He told me he was going to buy mineral water. It's common to buy bottled water at a nearby convenience store but he brings water from a water purifier. I was very curious about it.

.

I followed him to the water purifier. It was kind of like a street vending machine. Putting a coin into the hole, purified water came out. After we got the water, we sat on a chair and talked. He was from Leeds, England. When I told him that I had stopped by when visiting Edinburgh, he was pleased to hear me. I then told the story of Queen Elizabeth II, who died last September.

.

I told him that Queen Elizabeth II had visited Andong Hahoe Folk Village in Korea. The simple and friendly appearance of the queen to us at that time left a deep impression on Koreans. That's why I think we have expressed more sadness over her death. He asked me what Hahoe Village was like. I immediately took out my smartphone and found Hahoe Village on Google search and showed it to him. Bingo! As expected, the video worked much faster than the words.

.

Told him that it's a folk village where Korean traditional houses, which were registered as UNESCO World Heritage sites, have been well preserved. When he heard me, he liked it very much and said he really wanted to go see there. Well, again, videos were faster and more touching and effective than writings and words. This made me realize once again that I was living in a new hi-tech era. It's a really fun, rewarding, and magical world for me.

.

(Other than that, we had a lot of talk, but one of them was that I couldn't answer him his asking right away. "Can you answer if someone gives you 10 minutes to decide how to spend the rest of your life?")

.

Thanks.(Being proud of R.O.K's successful passport power.)
