칸차나부리에서 버스로 6시간을 달려 파타야 근처의 숙소에 도착했다. 5년 전에도 이곳에 한 번 묵었었다. 이곳의 장점이라면 파타야 해변가와 뚝 떨어져 있어서 조용하고 또 외국인 관광객들이 아주 적으므로 음식값 등이 현지인 물가라는 것. 물론 걷기 싫어하는 사람에겐 인기가 없다. 해변까지 가는데 30~40분은 걸어야 하니까. 일단 여기서 며칠 묵은 뒤 해변가로 옮길 예정.

이 숙소는 프랑스인이 운영한다. 그래서인지 이곳을 찾는 외국인 중 프랑스인들도 꽤 보인다. 이들과도 얘기를 나눈다. 요즘은 예전과 달리 프랑스인들도 대부분 영어를 자유롭게 구사한다. 내가 처음 프랑스를 갔던 때는 1983년이었다. 그땐 말할 것도 없지만 그 뒤 1990년대 중반까지도 프랑스인들은 영어를 쓰지 않았다. 영어를 알면서도 일부러 영어를 모르는 척 불어(佛語)만 구사했다. 그 점을 생각하면 오늘날 프랑스인들은 젊은이들은 물론 중장년층(中壯年層)도 영어를 거리낌 없이 사용한다. 대화에 아무 지장이 없다. 적어도 세계여행 중 내가 만난 그들은 그랬다.

오늘 얘기는 프랑스인과의 대화가 아니라 크로아티아인과의 대화이다. 점심을 마친 뒤 숙소의 풀장에 갔더니 마침 서구인 한 명이 수영하고 있었다. 인사를 나누고 보니 그는 크로아티아에서 왔으며 수의사(獸醫師)였다. 대학에서 교수 생활을 하다가 작년에 퇴직했다. 몇 살에 정년퇴직을 하느냐고 물었더니 65세라고. 크로아티아인들은 은퇴 후 노후 생활을 어떻게 하느냐고 물었다. 그는 한마디로 여행을 즐기며 사는 것이라고 했다. 주로 어디를 여행하느냐고 했더니 제일 인기 있는 곳은 이탈리아란다. 무엇이 그렇게 매력이냐고 했더니 그들의 국민성이 좋단다. 즉 낙천적이고 많이 웃고 친 인간적이라는 것이다.

그리고 그는 계속 자기 말을 이어갔다. 지금 그는 같은 대학 동료와 한 달 동안 동남아 3개국을 여행한단다. 먼저 베트남 사이공에서 일주일 여행을 하고 두 번째로 이곳 태국에 왔단다. 마지막 세 번째 갈 곳은 필리핀이라고 했다. 내가 한국은 태국 등 동남아 국가와 가까워서 자주 온다고 했더니 이 친구는 바로 내게 물었다. “나는 한국과 태국의 거리는 얼마나 되며, 항공료는 얼마인지 궁금합니다. 왜냐면 크로아티아-방콕 항공권이 상당히 비싸거든요…” 얼마입니까? 내가 물었다. “1,450유로냈어요.” “그렇군요. 한국과 방콕은 약 5시간 30분 비행거리이고, 요금은 다양한데, 암튼 이번에 우린 운 좋게도 싼 항공권을 구했어요. 500불 정도. 근데 크로아티아도 ‘유로’를 쓰나요? 내가 갔을 땐 ‘디나르’였습니다만.” “네, 2023년부터 유로를 씁니다.”

이 친구는 내가 크로아티아를 갔다는 말에 눈을 번쩍 뜨며 언제 그리고 얼마 동안 무엇을 보았느냐고 물었다. 나는 2009년, 2013년, 총 3개월 반을 아내와 함께 부부배낭여행으로 슬로베니아, 보스니아, 세르비아, 코소보, 마케도니아 등 발칸반도를 다 돌았다고 하니 이 친구 왈, “정말 잘했습니다. 부럽습니다. 난 그런 여행을 해보지 못했어요.…” 이 친군 뭔가 할 말이 많은 눈치였지만 난 더 이상 묻지 않았다. 말 못 할 개인 사정이 있는듯해서. 잠시 후 이 친군 다시 입을 열었다. “크로아티아에서 어디가 제일 좋았습니까? 물론 두브로브니크와 플리트비체는 틀림없이 가보았을 것이구요. 왜냐면 한국인은 물론 대부분의 외국 여행자들에게 제일 인기 있는 곳이 그곳이거든요.” 그러나 정작 그는 그런 관광지보다는 아드리아해가 품고 있는 역사성과 그 바다의 풍경과 물 색깔 등을 더 강조했다.

나는 그에게 그가 말한 곳은 다 가보았으며, 아드리아해의 아름다움을 이곳의 두브로브니크에서만 본게 아니라고 했다. 한번은 산마리노의 정상(頂上)에서, 또 한번은 이태리의 브린디시에서 그리스의 파트라스까지 1박2일 동안 아드리아해를 항해(航海)하면서 몸으로 체험했다고 했다. 내 말을 신중히 듣고 있는 그에게 역사 얘기도 했다. 나는 불가리아에서 슬로베니아를 거쳐 크로아티아까지 버스로 이동(移動)하면서 험악한 산세(山勢)를 오르내릴 때마다 몽골군이 헝가리 등 동유럽을 정복하고 폴란드뿐만 아니라 발칸반도의 크로아티아에서도 전투했던 강골(強骨)의 몽골 기마병(騎馬兵)을 생각했다고 했다. 혹시 크로아티아인의 뿌리가 슬라브족에 있다면 한국인은 훈족에 있으며 더 거슬러 올라가면 북방 유목민족인 몽골계와 아마도 아틸라왕과 흉노와도 다 맥이 닿는다고 생각합니다만.... 내가 너무 나갔나...암튼 내 말을 듣고 있던 친구의 얼굴빛이 시무룩해져서 화제(話題)를 돌렸다.

내가 그에게 필리핀 어디를 가느냐고 물었더니 마닐라라고 했다. 왜 하필 좋은 섬들도 많은데 그렇게 복잡한 도심지를 가려고 하느냐고 했더니 그는 사람들이 많은 곳이 좋단다. 태국의 푸켓이 좋다고 해서 가보았지만, 전혀 아니었단다. 자기 나라의 아드리아해만큼 좋은 곳은 없다는 결론을 내린 뒤 다른 나라의 바다는 안 간단다. 그래서 베트남에서도 다들 하롱베이를 추천했지만 자기는 안 가고 사이공에서만 머물렀다고.

나는 필리핀에서의 내 경험담을 전해주며 특히 도심(都心)에서는 주의하는 것이 좋다고 했다. 베트남이나 태국 혹은 다른 동남아 국가와는 달리 마닐라에는 웬만한 상점엔 무장(武裝) 경비원이 지킨다고 했더니, 이 친구 왈, “난 그런 거 걱정 안 합니다. 사람은 언제 어디서 죽을지 아무도 몰라요. 베트남도 위험하다고 했지만 결국 그런 일은 없었습니다.” 내가 민망할 정도로 자기 철학, 즉 생사관(生死觀)이 확고한 친구였다. 그렇다고 목숨 걸고 여행할 순 없지 않은가. 아무튼, 겁쟁이는 망설이다 이것저것 다 놓친다는 말이 생각났다.

(그 외 이 친구와 많이 나눈 얘기 중에는 2022. 카타르 월드컵에서 크로아티아가 4강 진출에 이어 3,4위 전에서 모로코를 이겨 3위를 했다는 것과 그것도 숨 조이는 승부차기로. 그리고 한국의 경제발전과 더불어 동반 성장한 애완견 문화, 플리트비체 호수에서 있었던 해프닝, 리예카행 기차를 타고 가다 철로 사고로 버스를 갈아타고 갔던 얘기, 자그레브 시내 한가운데 우뚝 솟아있던 삼성과 현대의 초대형 입간판 등에 대해서 많은 얘기를 나눴다.)

People met on my backpacking133 - A Croatian met in Pattaya

It took 6 hours by bus from Kanchanaburi to the hotel near Pattaya. We once stayed here five years ago. The good point here is that it is quiet because it's far from Pattaya Beach and there are very few foreign tourists, so food prices and other prices are lower than others. Of course, it's not so good place for those who don't like to walk. It takes at least 30 to 40 minutes to get to the beach. We're going to stay here for a few days and move to the beach.

This hotel is run by a Frenchman. That's why I think I can see quite a few French people among the foreigners who visit here. These days, unlike before, most French speak English freely. It's quite different before. I mean the first time I went to France was in 1983. Not to mention then, the French didn't speak English until the mid-1990s. Even though they knew English, they deliberately only spoke French as if they didn't know English. Considering that, I think the French today use English freely, not only young guys but also middle-aged people. At least they did so when I met them on a trip around the world.

But today's story is not about the French but a conversation with the Croatian. After lunch, when I got to the pool of my hotel and there was a Westerner swimming. After greeting him, I knew he was from Croatia and he was a veterinarian. He retired last year after teaching at the university. When I asked him what age they were retiring, he said 65. When I asked him what Croatians do after retirement, he said, they were enjoying their trip. When I asked where they usually travel, he replied the most popular place was Italy. What's so attractive in Italy I asked him. He said they liked their national character. In other words, Italians are optimistic, laugh a lot, and is pro-human.

And he kept on his words. He told me he traveled to three Southeast Asian countries with his friend from the same university for a month. He first traveled for a week in Saigon, Vietnam and then here in Thailand for the second time. He said the last third place to go was the Philippines. I told him that Korea was close to Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand, so I often come to Thailand and he asked me right away. "I wonder how far Korea and Thailand are and how much is the airfare. Because Croatian-Bangkok tickets are quite expensive..." How much is it? I asked. "It's 1,450 euros." "I see. Korea and Bangkok are about 5 hrs and 30 mins away, and the fares are various but luckily, we got a cheap one this time. About $500 of each. "Do you use Euro, too? It was 'Dinar' when I visited your country." "Yes, we do use the Euro from 2023."

He opened his eyes wide to hear that I had been to Croatia and asked what I had seen there and how long stayed in. I told him that in 2009. 2013, I traveled all the Balkans, including Bosnia, Serbia, Kosovo, and Macedonia, on a couple's backpack trip with my wife for three months and a half in total. "You did a great job. I'm envious of you. I've never done on such a world trip..." He seemed to have a lot to say but I didn't ask him any more questions. Because it's none of my business. After a while, he started to talk again. "Where did you like best in Croatia? Of course, you've been to Dubrovnik and Plitvice-lakes. Because it is the most popular place for Koreans as well as most foreign tourists." However, he emphasized more about the historicity of the Adriatic Sea, the seascape and the color of the water than such tourist attractions.

I told him what I had experienced related to this topic. I saw the beauty of the Adriatic Sea at the top of San Marino and I sailed the Adriatic Sea from Brindisi, Italy, to Patras, Greece, for one night and two days. Watching him listening carefully to me, I even told him about Balkan history. "Every time I traveled by bus from Bulgaria to Slovenia to Croatia, I thought of Mongolian horsemen who conquered Eastern Europe, including Hungary and fought not only in Poland but also in Croatia in the Balkans. I think if the Croatian roots are in the Slavs, I think Koreans are in the Huns and further back, we are in line with the Mongolians, probably King Attila and the Huns. Well, I thought I'd better stop talking more about it. Anyway, he who was listening to me didn't seem to be in a good mood, so I changed the topic.

When I asked him where he was going in the Philippines, unexpectedly he said Manila. "Why is that so noisy city? Why not such good islands there in Philippines?" "Well, I went to Phuket in Thailand because I heard it was excellent but it was not at all. After concluding that there is no place like the Adriatic Sea of my own country, the sea of other countries aer not worth seeing them. So you know everyone recommended Ha Long Bay in Vietnam but I didn't go and stayed only in Saigon."

I told him my experience in the Philippines and said it's good to be careful, especially in the city center. Because Philippines is not same as Vietnam, Thailand, or other Southeast Asian countries, every big stores are kept by armed guards. But he said, "I'm not worried about that. Who knows? No one knows when or where we will die. Don't you think so? Well, you know they told me that Vietnam is so dangerous, but it happened nothing in the end." I thought he was a man with a firm philosophy, a view of life, that I was embarrassed by. But I thought he shouldn't risk his life traveling. Anyway, his words reminded me of the saying that a coward hesitates and gets nothing.

(PS, Other than that, I talked a lot with him. In the 2022 Qatar World Cup, Croatia beat Morocco in third place and also won with a breathtaking penalty shootout. And we talked a lot about the rapidly growing pet culture in Korea. We talked a lot about the happening in plitvice-lakes, the story of taking a train from Zagreb to Rijeka and changing buses in a railroad accident and the super-large signboards of Samsung and Hyundai which stood tall in the middle of Zagreb city.)
