원래 우리는 아유타야에서 12일간 머물 예정이었는데 7일 만에 다시 방콕으로 와야만 했다. 아내의 친구들이 서울에서 방콕으로 온다는 연락을 받고 수와나폼 공항으로 마중을 나가기 위해서였다. 이 친구들은 그룹 투어만 했기에 자유여행 경험이 없었다. 우리가 방콕에 있는 동안 함께 여행을 원했기에 아내가 이를 받아들여 본의 아니게 그들을 위해 일주일간 봉사하기로 한 것이다. 아내는 친구들이 공항에 도착하는 첫날부터 마중을 나가는 등 바쁜 일정이 시작됐다.

방콕에서 아유타야를 갈 땐 기차로(1시간 40분 소요, 요금 20밧트), 되돌아올 땐 미니버스로(약 1시간 소요, 요금 70밧트), 우린 방콕 카오산로드 숙소에 체크인한 뒤 아내는 공항으로 급히 가고 난 숙소 옆 식당으로 갔다. 식당 입구에 걸어놓은 메뉴를 본 뒤 식당 안을 들여다봤다. 마침 50대로 보이는 두 서구인(西歐人)이 술을 마시다 나와 눈길이 마주쳤다. 한 친구가 나에게 눈인사를 했다. 나는 바로 그들과 합석(合席)을 했다. 이들은 식사는 이미 끝내고 맥주를 즐기고 있었다.

난 아내와 함께 서울에서 왔는데 당신들은 어디서 왔느냐고 물었더니, 런던에서 왔단다. 나도 런던에 여러 번 갔었다고 하니, 한 친구가 런던 어디에 묵었느냐고 물었다. 여러 곳에 묵어보았지만, 특히 한 곳은 매우 인상적이어서 아직 기억하고 있다고 했더니 그곳이 어디냐고 물었다. 런던 시내에서 지하철로 약30~40분 거리의 유스호스텔이었는데 그곳에는 가톨릭 공동묘지(共同墓地)가 있었다고 했다.

내 말이 끝나자마자 두 친구는 거의 동시에 그 호스텔을 안다고 했다. 자기들은 그 주변의 ‘카자이언트’에 근무한단다. ‘카자이언트’란 말을 들으니 기억이 났다. 우리 숙소를 오가면서 그곳을 여러 번 본 적도 있고, 또한 ‘카자이언트’는 중고차(中古車) 거래소로 세계에서도 이름난 곳이기 때문이다. 알고 보니 우리 부부는 이 친구들의 직장 옆 호스텔에 있었던 셈이다. 한 친구가 나에게 또 물었다. 그 호스텔은 공동묘지가 바로 옆에 있어서 더 유명한데, 혹시 다른 곳에서도 그런 경험을 한 적이 있느냐고.

물론 한국엔 없다고 했다. 그러나 다른 나라에선 많이 경험했다. 가령, 이집트 카이로, 폴란드 크라코프, 필리핀 마닐라, 프랑스 파리, 아르헨티나 부에노스 아이레스, 일본 나가사키, 탄자니아 우루사, 오스트리아 비엔나, 브라질 리우데자네이루, 체코 프라하, 포르투갈 리스본 등 상당히 많다. 한국엔 이런 문화가 없다 보니 난 여행 중에 이런 곳을 보면 그냥 지나치지 않는다. 사진을 찍어 두기도 한다. 이처럼 유럽 등은 물론 미국도 곳곳에 공동묘지가 있지만 동네와 멀지 않다. 걸어서 쉽게 갈 수 있다. 오하이오 신시내티에 있는 내 친구의 묘를 방문한 적이 있지만, 역시 그 친구의 집에서 도보(徒步) 가능한 거리에 있었다.

이 친구들은 한국엔 그런 문화가 없다는 말에 고개를 갸우뚱했다. 궁금하냐고 물었더니 그렇단다. 사실 한국인들은 오랜 전통과 관습에 의해 매장(埋葬)을 해왔으며, 고인(故人)의 옷 등 유품(遺品)은 소각(燒却)했다. 시신(屍身)을 안치(安置)할 곳, 즉 묘지(墓地)는 집에서 멀었다. 아주 멀기도 한다. 너무 무정(無情)하고 냉정(冷靜)하고 매정하게 보일 정도다. 한국인은 정(情)이 많다고 하지만 과연 그런지 의문이 생길 때가 많다. 이런 현상은 내 생각에 종교와도 무관하다. 왜냐면 한국엔 기독교, 불교, 유교 등 다종교 국가이지만 그런 현상은 공통으로 나타나기 때문이다. 물론 오늘날은 대부분 시신을 화장(火葬) 후 납골당(納骨堂)에 모신다. 유품을 소각하는 것도 불법(不法)이다.

한 친구가 물었다. 한국은 산업화로 성공했고 반도체 등 첨단과학의 선진국이지 않으냐며 또 고개를 갸우뚱한다. 샤머니즘, 즉 미신과 같은 것이 아니냐는 것이다. 나도 그렇게 생각하지만 고루(古壘)한 인습(因襲)의 굴레가 너무 긴 것이 문제라고 했다. 그러나 한국엔 이 같은 인습을 타파(打破)하고자 노력했던 위대한 지도자가 있었고 또 나올 것이라고 했다. 나는 그들에게 박정희 대통령에 관해 설명했다. 그는 선견지명(先見之明)이 있는 지도자로서 이미 1969년에 최초로 '가정의례준칙(家庭儀禮準則)'을 선포했다. 약혼식, 결혼식, 장례식 등의 의식(意識)과 절차를 간소화해 현대문명 생활에 맞게 한 것이다. 아쉽게도 국민은 아직 이를 수용할 만한 그릇이 못 됐다. 문제는 아직 그 상태에 머물러 있다는 것.

내 말을 흥미롭게 듣고 있던 이 친구들에게 물었다. 혹시 영국의 지도자 가운데 가장 훌륭한 인물을 들라면 누굴 들겠냐고. 한 친구는 그냥 웃기만 했고 다른 친구는 처칠을 들었다. 그는 처칠의 다음 말을 인용했다. “나는 돼지를 좋아한다. 개는 사람을 높게 보고 고양이는 사람을 낮게 보지만, 돼지는 동등하게 대하기 때문이다.” 나는 처칠의 말, “피와 노고 그리고 땀과 눈물밖에 드릴 게 없습니다.”를 말했다. 가만히 있던 친구가 웃으며 말했다. 자기가 제일 좋아하는 처칠의 말은, “독수리가 가만히 있으면 앵무새가 떠들기 시작한다.”였다. 우리 속담에도 “고양이가 자리를 비우면 쥐들이 설쳐댄다.”라는 말이 있다고 해서 함께 웃었다.

이 친구들에게 태국이 맘에 드느냐고 물었다. 한 친구가 말하길 태국이 좋긴 한데, 항공권(航空券)이 너무 비싸서 탈이란다. 얼마나 하느냐고 했더니 1,400파운드(약 190만 원)란다. 사실 난 이런 얘길 들을 때마다 기분이 묘하다. 저들뿐만 아니라 서구인들 대부분이 태국에 한 번 오려면 마치 우리가 유럽이나 북미를 가려면 그러하듯이 항공료 등 경비가 상당한 부담이 되기 때문이다. 이런 의미에서 태국 같은 나라가 우리나라 가까이에 있다는 건 일종의 행운(幸運)이라 할 만하다.

이 친구는 태국이 세 번째란다. 태국에 처음 온 게 1990년이라고 했다. 그때의 태국은 정말 가난했단다. 오늘날과 비교하면 천양지차(天壤之差)라고 했다. 이곳 카오산로드에는 건물다운 건물이 없었단다. 방콕에서 치앙마이까지 버스로 12시간 걸렸다고. 밤새도록 달려 아침에 치앙마이에 도착하니 막막할 정도였단다. 버스에서 내리고 보니 허허벌판이었기 때문. 난 그가 1990년에 경험한 얘길 듣고 있으면서 계속 맞장구를 쳤다. 나도 1990년에 방콕에서 버스로 밤새 달려 치앙마이를 갔었으니까.

나는 내 스마트폰에 저장된 1990년 당시의 치앙마이 버스터미널과 카오산로드 풍경을 찍어 둔 사진을 꺼내 보여주었다. 이 친구는 깜짝 놀라며 옛날 기억을 또렷이 되새기듯 내 사진을 한동안 쳐다보며 옛 추억에 잠기는 듯했다. 자그마치 43년 전에 우린 치앙마이에 있었던 것이다. 이처럼 동시대(同時代)의 추억을 공유(共有)하는 친구를 만나면 대화의 즐거움은 배(倍)가 되기도 한다.

(참고: 난 내 스마트폰에 내가 여행 중 찍어 둔 사진 대부분을 다 저장했다. 이번처럼 외국인 친구들과 대화를 할 때 아주 요긴하게 활용한다. 효과 만점. 뿐만 아니다. 영어 사전은 물론 시사 문제와 역사 등 온갖 필요한 정보와 지식을 즉석에서 검색해 활용한다. 이런 꿈같은 세상이 올 줄이야!!!)

난 이 친구들에게 또 다른 치앙마이와 관련한 옛 얘길 들려줬다. 당시 1990년, 내가 치앙마이에서 래프팅을 포함한 1박 2일의 트레킹을 할 때, 나와 호흡이 잘 맞았던 영국인 친구가 있었다. 우리는 6년 후 홍콩에서 우연히 길을 걷다 다시 만났다. 이때의 반가움이란 대단했다고 말한 뒤, 세상은 이처럼 좁으니 우리도 언젠가 또 만날 수 있다고 했다. 이 친구 왈, 이미 세상은 급속도로 작아졌다며, 우리는 곧 우주선(宇宙船)을 타고 달나라 여행을 가게 될 것이라며 한바탕 웃었다.

사실 생각해 보니 이 친구의 말이 맞다. 이미 미국에선 민간 우주여행을 8차례 시도하면서 28명이 우주(宇宙) 구경을 하고 왔으니까. 이제 곧 누군가가 오늘 내가 한 말을 이렇게 바꿔 말할지도 모른다. 세상이 좁아진 게 아니라 우주가 좁아졌다고. 상상만 해도 기분이 좋은 말이다.

People met on my backpacking123 - a 43-year-old travel story shared the UK friedns

We had to come back to Bangkok in seven days, reducing our schedule of 12 days in Ayutthaya. It was because of my wife's friends. They asked my wife to accompany them on their trip to Bangkok and she couldn't refuse it. She accepted it and unintentionally took charge of the guide with the heart of serving her friends for a week. She began to be busy from the first day of her friends' arrival at the airport.

We used the train to go to Ayutthaya from Bangkok (1 hour and 40 minutes, for 20 baht) and the minibus (about 1 hour, fof 70 baht) to return. After we checked in to the hotel of Kaosan Road in Bangkok, my wife rushed to the airport. I went to a restaurant to have my lunch. After seeing the menu hanging at the entrance of the restaurant, I looked inside the restaurant. At that time, I met my eyes with two Westerners who seemed to be in their 50s. I joined them. They had already finished their meals and were enjoying their beer.

They were from London. When I told them that I had been to London several times, one guy asked me where I stayed in London. Said that I've stayed in many places, but one place in particular was very impressive, so I still remember it. He asked me where it was. I said it was a youth hostel about 30 to 40 minutes by subway from downtown London and there was a Catholic cemetery.

Soon after I finished speaking, both guys told me they knew the hostel. They said they worked for the 'Cargiant' around it. Then I also remembered that I've heard the word 'carginat'. It's also famous in the world of used car dealing. That meant that my wife and I were in the hostel next to their workplace. what a coinstance. One guy asked me again. The hostel has been more famous because the cemetery was right next to it. He wondered if I had ever experienced it anywhere else.

Of course, I told them that there's no such thing in Korea. However, I said I've experienced a lot in other countries. For example, Cairo in Egypt, Krakow in Poland, Manila in the Philippines, Paris in France, Buenos Aires in Argentina, Nagasaki in Japan, Ursa in Tanzania, Vienna in Austria, Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, Prague in the Czech Republic, and Lisbon in Portugal, etc. Since there's no such culture in Korea, I couldn't just pass by when I saw the tombs like this while traveling. I took them in my camera. You know, cemeteries were not far from neighborhoods in Europe and the USA. It's easy to get there on foot. I've visited my friend's grave in Cincinnati, Ohio. Of course it's within a stone's throw of my friend's home.

They looked strange when I told them that we have no such culture in Korea. In fact, Koreans have been buried according to long traditions and customs, and relics such as clothes of the deceased have been incinerated. The place where the body will be placed, that is, the cemetery, was far from family's home. Even Korens looked too heartless, cold, and inhumane. Koreans' hearts were warm, but that's not true. When a man dies, they become very not warm but cold. I think this kind of phenomenon has nothing to do with religion. This is because Korea is a multi-religious country such as Christianity, Buddhism, and Confucianism but it appears in common from them. Of course, today, most of the bodies are cremated and enshrined in charnel houses. It's also illegal to incinerate artifacts.

One guy said to me, "Korea has succeeded in industrialization and is an advanced country in high-tech science such as semiconductors." He said again, "Isn't it something like shamanism, or superstition?" I said that it's because the bad customs in Korea lasted too long. Luckily Korea had a great leader who tried to break out the bad custom. I told them about President Park Chung-hee. As a leader with foresight, he already declared the first practical "family ritual rule" in 1969. The ceremony and procedures such as engagement, wedding, and funeral were simplified to suit modern life. Badly, Koreans then couldn'd understand his reform plan and more hopelessly, I told them that Koreans are still in that state.

I asked them who were listening to me interestingly. Who would be the best British leader? One guy said nothing and the other recommended Churchill. In Churchill's words, he said, "I like pigs. Dogs look up to us. Cats look down on us. Pigs treat us as equals." I also quoted Churchill. ""I have nothing to offer but blood, hard work, sweat and tears." One who was just listening smiled and said. Churchill's favorite saying was, "When the eagles are silent, the parrots begin to jabber." They laughed with me when I tolde them a Korean proverb that said, "When the cat’s away the mice will paly.“

Asked them if they liked Thailand. One said Yes. But the air ticket was too expensive said he. Asked how much it was, he said it's 1,400 pounds. I said it's like when we visit to Europe or N. America. In this sense, I said, it's a kind of good luck for us that a country like Thailand is close to Korea.

It's his third visit to Thailand, he said. His first visit to Thailand was in 1990. Thailand was really poor back then. He said Thai was so poor beyond comparison with today. There was no building-like building here on Kaosan Road. Took 12 hours from Bangkok to Chiang Mai by bus. Ran all night and arrived in Chiang Mai in the morning and at a loss. He got off the bus and found himself in the empty field. I kept nodding and listening to his passionate talk about his experience in 1990. Because I also had the same experience in 1990.

I saved pictures of Chiang Mai Bus Terminal and Kaosan Road in 1990 on my smartphone. I took them out and showed them to him then. He was surprised to see my photos and seemed to be immersed in old memories, staring at my photos for a while as if he were clearly reflecting on his old memories. Hard to believe it but 43 years ago we were together in Chiang Mai. As such, when we meet some friends who share memories of the contemporary era, the joy of conversation immediately jumps up.

Not only English dictionary but all necessary data and knowledge that I need at the spot such as current affairs and history are in my S-phone. I really didn't expect to live such a kind of dreamlike world!!!)

I told them another old story about Chiang Mai. At that time, there was an English man who worked well with me on a two-day trek in Chiang Mai in 1990. Six years later, we met again by chance while walking down the street in Hong Kong. After telling him the amazing joy of that time, I told him that we could meet again someday. Then he said something I couldn't imagine. "The world has got already smaller rapidly. We will soon go on a trip to the moon in a spaceship," he replied.

Actually, come to think of it, he was right. Since 28 people have already tried eight private space trips in the U.S. Then soon someone might say something I said today in this way. "It's not that the world got smaller but the universe is getting smaller and smaller. Isn't it pleasant enough to even imagine?
