오늘도 우리 부부는 태국의 고대(古代) 수도(首都)인 아유타야 왕국의 불교 유적지(遺跡地)를 쉬엄쉬엄 돌아봤다. 물론 처음 보는 것이 아니므로 신선도(新鮮度)가 떨어질 수도 있다. 그러나 그것도 대상(對象)에 따라 다른 것 같다. 똑같은 것이지만 처음에 못 본 부분이 두 번째에는 보이기도 하고 더 큰 감동을 받기도 하니까.

암튼 오늘 불교 유적지에서 스페인 친구 덕에 더 즐거운 여행이 됐다. 그가 특히 불상(佛相) 하나하나를 꼼꼼히 들여다보는 자세가 인상적이었다. 내가 먼저 인사를 건냈다. 그는 발렌시아에서 왔다고 했다. 이 말을 듣자마자 아내가 먼저 반갑게 인사를 건네며 우리도 그곳을 여행했다고 하자, 순간 서먹한 분위기는 절친(切親)의 분위기로 바뀌었다. 외국인과 첫인사를 나눌 때 가장 빨리 친밀감(親密感)을 나눌 수 있게 하는 것은 상대의 나라에 가보았다고 말할 때이다. 그러면 이야기는 술술 풀린다.

발렌시아는 정말 아름다운 곳이었다고 하자 이 친구는 맞장구를 치며 좋아했다. 자기는 원래 ‘바로셀로나’에서 태어나 고등학교를 마친 뒤 부모로부터 독립을 선언하고 발렌시아로 왔단다. 이유를 물었더니 그곳에는 상대적으로 일자리 얻기가 더 쉬였기 때문이란다. 스페인 역시 세계사의 보고(寶庫)여서 년(年) 중 내내 관광객이 끊이지 않으니 참 부럽다고 했더니 그는 긍정하면서도 뭔가 못마땅하다는 표정이었다. 그 이유를 물었더니 그는 스페인은 경제가 매우 불안정하고 정치는 더 엉망이라고 했다. 어딜 가나 정치가 문제인 것 같다.

얘길 나누다 보니 그도 나만큼 역사에 관심이 많았다. 특히 전쟁사(戰爭史). 나는 자연스럽게 아유타야의 역사 이야기를 꺼내면서 이들의 역사가 부럽다고 했다. 그는 왜 비참하게 망한 아유타야 역사가 부럽냐고 했다. 조선조(朝鮮朝)에 해당하는 약 500년 동안, 침략만 받고 노예처럼 살고 있을 때, 아유타야 왕국은 버마(미얀마)와 캄보디아 등 주변 국가와 치열(熾烈)하게 싸웠다. 밀당을 거쳐 결국 아유타야가 승리(勝利)를 했다. 난 그 역사가 부럽다고 했다. 동시대의 우리나라엔 그런 역사가 없다고 하자 이 친구는 눈을 크게 뜨며 의아(疑訝)해했다.

한국엔 오직 수백 번(960번 주장하기도) 외침(外侵)을 받았을 뿐 다른 나라를 침공(侵攻)한 적이 없다는 것. 이를 마치 자랑으로 삼는다는 것. 난 그 점이 싫다고 했다. 이 친구가 바로 또 반문(反問)했다. 세계사에서 그렇게 많은 침공(侵攻)만 당하고 살아남은 사례가 있느냐고. 당연히 없다. 그래서 난 더 자괴감(自愧感)을 느낀다고 했다. 한국인은 평화를 사랑하는 민족이어서 남의 나라를 침략하지 않았다는 말에 난 비굴함과 비열함을 동시에 느낀다고 했다. 혹시 스페인 역사에서 단 한 번도 전쟁을 치르지 않고 상대국을 정복한 적이 있느냐고 물었더니 묵묵부답(默默不答).

어느 나라의 유적지이든 나는 그 역사의 현상에 서면 동시에 우리나라, 대한민국의 역사와 비교를 한다. 아유타야의 놀라운 역사 역시 동시대(同時代)의 조선조와 비교해 봤다. 결과는 항상 그러하듯 아쉬움과 수치감에 빠진다. 아유타야 왕국이 캄보디아와 버마(미얀마)로부터 침략을 수없이 당하면서도, 때론 왕이 항복하고 스스로 적국(敵國)에 속국(屬邦)이 되겠다고 애걸까지 하지만 거절당하는 수모(受侮)도 겪는다.

와신상담(臥薪嘗膽) 후 보복(報復) 공격으로 결국 적국(敵國)을 무릎 굽힌다. 이런 드라마틱한 공방전(攻防戰)은 특히 버마와 캄보디아에서 한편의 서사시(敍事詩)처럼 펼쳐진다. 참으로 부러운 역사가 아닐 수 없다. 그런 의미에서 나는 스페인은 물론 역사 속에서 치열하게 싸워 승자(勝者)와 패자(敗者)가 자리바꿈을 많이 한 나라를 좋아한다고 했다. 그런 의미에서 700년 식민시대(植民時代)를 종식(終熄)한 이사벨 여왕과 피사로 장군 그리고 코르테스 장군을 좋아한다고 했다. 이 친구는 계속 흥미로운 표정으로 듣기만 했다.

나는 이 친구에게 27년 전, 터키 여행 중 있었던 이스탄불 대학생들과 나눈 얘기도 들려주었다. 특히 두 학생이 한국의 경제성장을 너무 부러워했다. 당시의 터키는 정말 형편없었다. 암튼, 나는 그때 그들에게 터키가 더 부럽다고 했다. 이유는 지금 내가 주장하는 논리와 같았다. 터키 역시 자그마치 거의 1000여 년을 정복 국가로 군림한 역사가 있기 때문이다. 한마디로 나는 피정복(被征服) 국가보다는 정복 국가를, 조공(租貢)을 바친 나라보다는 조공을 받은 나라를, 침략(侵略)에 쫓기는 나라보다는 강한 침략국이 된 나라가 좋다고 했다. 그런 역사를 가져본 적이 없는 나로서는 그들의 역사가 그저 부러울 뿐이기 때문이다.

16년 전, 미얀마(버마)의 ‘창나비치’에서 있었던 경험담도 들려주었다. 오늘날 미얀마는 태국과는 비교불가(比較不可)일 정도로 빈곤국이다. 태국에서 일하는 소위 3D 업종 종사자들도 대부분 미얀마인이다. 그러나 이들과 얘길 나눠보면 자기 나라가 아유타야 왕국, 즉 오늘날의 태국을 정복하고 지배했던 역사가 있음에 대단한 자부심(自負心)이 있음을 발견했다. 이 같은 예를 들면 몽골, 베트남 등 한둘이 아니다. 이들은 한때 지배를 받았다고 결코 주눅이 들지 않는다. 자기들도 그들을 공격하고 지배한 역사가 있기 때문이다. 난 이 점이 그토록 부러운 것이다.

내가 아는 한 유럽 역사는 물론 세계사 전반(全般)이 그렇다고 해도 과언이 아닐 것이다. 스페인 친구들이 다 싫어하는 말이 있다. “나는 무적함대를 좋아한다.” 이는 마치 비슷한 시기에 있었던 임진왜란에 관한 얘길 나누던 중 제삼자가 일본인에게 “나는 거북선을 좋아한다.”라고 말하는 것과 같기 때문이다. 실제로 당시 잉글랜드가 스페인을 조롱하는 의미로 ‘무적함대’라는 명칭을 부각(浮刻)시킨 면이 없지 않기 때문이다.

우리는 이런저런 얘길 나누면서 약 두 시간에 걸쳐 그늘에 앉아 쉬기도 하면서 ‘왓 마하탓’ 불교 유적지와 ‘왓 랏차부라나’ 유적지 두 곳을 돌았다.

People met on my backpacking118 – Invincible Armade I Met at a Buddhist Site

Again today, our couple toured the Buddhist sites of the Ayutthaya Kingdom, the ancient capital of Thailand. Of course, it is not the first time to see it, so the freshness may decrease. But it also depends on time and object. It's the same thing, but I can see the parts that I didn't see at first and it's even more touching.

Anyway, today was a more enjoyable day thanks to a Spanish backpacker at a Buddhist site. It was particularly impressive to me that he looked closely at each face of the Buddha. Saying hi to him then he said he was from Valencia. As soon as my wife heard this, she greeted him warmly and said that we had also traveled there. The atmosphere quickly changed to a friendly atmosphere. When greeting foreigners for the first time, the fastest way to share intimacy is to say that you have been to the other person's country. Then the story goes on smoothly.

When my wife said, Valencia was such a beautiful place, he replied with a smile. Originally born in Barcelona, he made up his mind to be free from his parents and moved to Valencia after high school. I told him that Spain is a treasure house of the world history, so he must be happy to have all the visitors from the world. He looked ok but dissatisfied. When asked why, he said Spain's economy was terrible and politics was worser. Well, I thought politics seemed to be the problem everywhere.

As we talked, he was as interested in history as I was. Especially the history of war. I naturally talked about Ayutthaya's history and said I liked their history. He asked me why I liked Ayutthaya history, which was miserably ruined. They fought fiercely against neighboring countries such as Myanmar and Cambodia for about 500 years, when we were invaded and lived like slaves. After pushing and pulling, Ayutthaya eventually won. I said I liked that kind of history. When I told him that we had no contemporary history with Ayutthaya, he opened his eyes wide and wondered.

Korea has been invaded only hundreds of times (even claimed 960 times) and has never invaded other countries. I said I hated this kind of history. He immediately asked back again if there was a case in world history that survived so many invasions. Of course not. So I said I felt more shameful. I said that I felt servility and meanness at the same time when I heard that Koreans were a peace-loving people and did not invade other countries. When asked if he had ever conquered his opponent without going to war in Spanish history, he said nothing.

Regardless of the historical site of any country, I compare it with the history of the Republic of Korea at the same time. I also compared the amazing history of Ayutthaya to the Joseon Dynasty of the same period. The result, as always, I was left with regret and shame. The Ayutthaya Kingdom had been invaded numerous times by Cambodia and Burma (Myanmar). Sometimes the king even begged himself to surrender and become a subordinate country to the enemy. But the king also suffered the humiliation of being rejected.

However, King Ayutthaya eventually bowed down his enemy country in retaliation. This dramatic battle took place just like an epic poem, especially in Burma and Cambodia. Indeed, I love their history. In that sense, I said that I liked Spain as well as a country where winners and losers have changed their places after fierce fighting in history. In that sense, I said I liked Queen Isabel, General Pizarro, and General Cortes, who ended the colonial period in 700yrs. This guy kept listening to me with an interesting expression.

I told him the story I had with Istanbul University students in Turkey 27 years ago. In particular, the two students really envied Korea's economic growth. Turkey at the time was soy bad. Anyway, I told them I was more envious of Turkey at the time. The reason was the same as the logic I'm now saying. It's because Turkey also had a history of reigning as a conquering country for nearly 1,000 years. I love it. In short, I said I preferred a conquered country and a country that received tributes. Because I've never had such a history.

I also told him about my experiences 16 years ago at Changna Beach in Myanmar (Burma. Today, Myanmar is an incomparable poor country with Thailand. Most of the so-called 3D industry workers in Thailand are Myanmar people. However, when I talked to them, I found that there was a great sense of pride in the history of his country conquering and dominating the Ayutthaya Kingdom, that is, present-day Thailand. There are countless such examples, including Mongolia and Vietnam. They are never discouraged that they were once ruled. This is because they also have a history of attacking and dominating them. I am so envious of this point.

As far as I know, not only European history but also world history have he same history as a whole. There is a word that all Spanish friends hate. "I like the Invincible Armada." It's because while talking about the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592, some guy tells the Japanese, "I like turtle ships." In fact, England at the time highlighted the name "Invincible Armada" in the sense of ridiculing Spain.

We spent about two hours sitting in the shade and resting while talking about this and that, going around two sites: "Wat Mahatatat" Buddhist sites and "Wat Ratchaburana" sites.
