People met on my backpacking116 – The Wonderful French Old Couple Met on the Chao Phraya River Ferry
.
If you walk about 10 minutes from Khaosan Road, you will find the Phra Athit Ferry dock of the Chao Phraya River. There are many such docks on both sides of the river like bus stops. In other words, it is a necessary means of transportation for locals across the river to come to downtown Bangkok. After globalization, local boats and small cruise ships for foreign travelers began to stand out here. However, many foreign travelers, including our couple, still use local ferry boats. This is because there are many things to see and think about while going up and down the river on a ferry with locals.
.
We used to go to Nontaburi, a suburb of Bangkok, about 30 minutes up the river. If we get off here and go to the traditional market, it's a completely rural atmosphere. Of course, there are few foreign travelers except us here. It means it doesn't suit their taste. Anyway, it's lunch time soon after we go around the traditional market here. We sit on a stool in the marketplace and have a hearty meal. (The same was true of the markets of Sinchon, Mapo, and Susaek in Seoul, where I lived in the 1960s and 1970s.) After lunch, we take a leisurely stroll around the local neighborhood. And when we return to Khaosan Road on the same boat again, another day's free and wonderful schedule ends.
.
This time, on the contrary, we went to Icon Siam, about 30 minutes downstream. This place is the opposite of the atmosphere of Nontaburi. There is an ultra-modern shopping mall representing Bangkok. This place is full of modernized facilities and stores, as well as all kinds of food compared to rich countries. This is why everyone gathers here regardless of whether it is local or foreigners. In short, this place is perfect for modern people's tastes. But what I want to talk about today is what happened when I was on a ferry from Phra Athit dock to Icon Siam. When the ferry arrives at the dock, locals and foreign travelers begin to board mixedly. There are no numbers on the seats, so it's first come, first served.
.
There was no vacancy in front of me. We were just pushed towards the seats in front of the ferry. Then I saw an interesting scene. They were a pair of Western-style elderly couples. Looking at it, an old man held the hand of an old lady behind him and slowly moved forward as if he were guiding a blind lady. The old lady looked so weak that her behavior was actually unstable. Unexpactedly, however, some of the front seats were empty, and we all were able to sit.
.
I first introduced the old man that we were a couple from Seoul, Korea. And I asked him his nationality. He said France. I told him that France was a country we have been to many times. Suddenly the old lady next to me smiled and asked me where in France I had been in fluent English. I said that I have been to many places, including Amiens, Roy, Calais, Mont-Saint-Michel, Normandy, Bash,Talmont, Lusong, Lourdes, Cognac, Lyon, and Avignon, as well as Paris. Then she looked surprised and asked me which of the places I had been to was the most memorable.
.
I told her that the most impressive place for me was sleeping in Amiens' thousand-year-old monastery guesthouse. Then, she asked me again what my motivation and purpose of traveling around the world was, and whether Koreans travel the world as much as I did. I told her that my motivation for traveling around the world had been my dream since I was young, and my purpose of traveling was to achieve it. Told her that before COVID-19, more than 30 million Koreans traveled around the world a year, and recently, 120,000 Koreans leave Incheon International Airport a day as the COVID-19 crisis had eased. Then, she looked surprised and said something to her husband in French. He also said with a surprised look, "Korea is good." Then he again kept quite. I thought English was not easy for him.
.
It was my turn. I asked where she lived in France and she said she lived in Paris. When asked if city life was too nosy and complicated, she said she prefered it to any other place. In my experience, the French of the older generation were very weak in English, so I asked her how she was so good at English. She told me that she majored in English in college and had a job using English even after graduation. Asked her that where she liked the most, it was Thailand said she. Because it's her second time coming to Thailand, but she still felt like she would continue to come as long as her health permits.
.
I asked her what was the most attractive thing about Thailand. She told me that it was warm weather, various foods, and low prices as I expected. She added that they would never stop their backpacking trips because they made promises to each other when they got married. She meant she would continue to travel around the world with her husband until the last moment when her body could move. Suddenly the two looked respectful to me. What was very impressive to me was that throughout the conversation, her eyes were shining, her voice was clear, and her smiling face was as happy as the expectation of a young girl leaving the picnic. Of course, her husband seemed satisfied with his wife's happy face, with his eyes fixed on her wife's happy look. Their wider and deeper trust and affection stood out.
.
I last asked her thoughts on traveling around the world travel. She spoke in French with her husband for a while and left this comment.
.
"Traveling is not always fun and comfortable. Sometimes the body is tired, disappointed, and even heartbroken. Nevertheless, the reason why I keep traveling is that I gain more than I lose from it. Man is an animal of curiosity. I see new places, different living cultures, and meet new people. I experience and learn more from them. It leaves, of course, traces of our memory, consciousness, heart, and body. This is fresh energy that makes our souls richer, wiser, and freer."
.
Totally agreed with them. They seemed to be well aware of the truth that we all should not be foolish that regret and reproache what we have not done rather than what we have done so far at the last moment of our lives. Before we knew it, we arrived at Icon Siam. We let them get off first when we got off the boat. However, the old lady held out her hand to tell us to get off first. After getting off at the dock, I turned around to greet them. The old man was slowly coming forward, holding his wife's hand tightly, just as he was getting on the ferry. I raised my hand and said, in Frech, "Bon voyage. Au revoir." Two also raised their hands to say goodbye to us with smiles.
.
PS, So far, there have been two wonderful old couple travelers we met while traveling around the world. An elderly couple from France and another one from Denmark (2019) who met at Cusco Armas Park in Peru.
.
Thank you.
