교토에는 의외로 큰 사찰들이 많다. 건물 규모만 큰 것이 아니다. 내부의 벽화, 밀랍형 인형, 조각상과 설명 등도 잘 표현돼 있다. 역사성의 깊이가 그대로 전달될 만큼 정밀하고 정교하다.

꼼꼼히 들여다보니 시간이 오래 걸리고 또한 피곤하기도 하다. 우리 부부도 휴식을 취하려고 그늘진 곳에 앉았다. 마침 건너편에 한 서양인 젊은이도 한동안 그늘에 앉아 쉬고 있는 모습이 보였다. 내가 다가가서 말을 걸었다.

이 친구는 영국 맨체스터에서 온 배낭여행자였다. 이름은 존. 갓 대학을 졸업했다. 불교에 관심이 많아서 이곳 교토에 왔단다. 그 다음은 역시 불교의 나라 태국으로 간단다. 전공이 종교학이냐고 물었더니 영문학이라고 했다.

내가 물었다. 한국에도 오랜 불교 역사가 있고 사찰도 많은데 한국엔 가 볼 의향이 없느냐고. 그는 이번 여행에서 한국을 갈 여유가 없단다. 여행 경비가 부족하다는 것이다. 그럼 태국엔 얼마나 있을 거냐고 물었더니 돈이 떨어질 때까지라고 했다.

말이 난 김에 물었다. 그는 여행 경비를 언제 어떻게 준비했는지. 사실 이 문제는 내가 오래 전부터 배낭여행을 시작하면서 관심을 가졌던 부분이다. 왜냐면 일본의 젊은이와 서구의 젊은이들은 여행 경비에 대해선 한국 젊은이들과 많이 달랐기 때문이다.

그는 자기가 알바로 번 돈 1400파운드와 아버지가 준 1000파운드로 여행을 한단다. 영국 아버지들은 다들 그렇게 자식의 여행비를 보태주느냐고 물었더니 아니라고 했다. 자기는 그저 운이 좋았을 뿐이다며 어깨를 들썩이며 웃었다.

최근 엘리자베스 2세 여왕의 장례식이 전 세계에 중계되어 나도 잘 보았는데 그는 어떻게 생각했느냐고 물었다. 그는 자기 가족 모두가 영국의 왕실을 존중하기 때문에 여왕의 서거에 깊은 애도를 표했다고 했다.

그가 나에게 물었다. 한국엔 여왕이 없었느냐고. 그에게 간단한 고대사를 설명했다. 한국의 고대 역사(BC 1~AD7)에는 3국(고구려, 백제, 신라)이 있었는데 그 중 신라만이 유일하게 여왕을 2명 배출했다. 그리고 신라는 3국을 통일하고 9세기에 또 한 명의 여왕이 등극했다. 불교는 신라 왕국의 국교로서 오랜 역사와 전통이 있다고 했더니 그는 눈을 크게 뜨며 관심을 보였다.

최근 이태원에서 발생한 핼러윈 축제 사고를 아느냐고 물었다. 그는 고개를 끄덕이며 정말 놀라운 사고였다고 했다. 그러나 예기치 않은 대형 사고는 언제 어디서든 발생하는 것이 아니냐며 담담한 어조로 말했다. 영국에선 핼러윈 축제를 어떻게 받아들이냐고 물었더니 그는 별로 관심이 없다며 어릴 때의 추억이 있을 뿐이라고 간단히 말했다.

그 외 우리가 나눈 얘기는 많았다. 거의 한 시간 동안 이런저런 얘기를 나눈 뒤 내가 손가락을 접으며 행운을 빈다고 했더니 그도 좋은 여행을 하라는 말로 화답하고 헤어졌다. 이처럼 여행 중에 새로운 사람을 만나 대화를 나누다 보면 또 다른 재미와 추억거리가 추가된다.

Enjoyed talking with a UK guy I met at Kyoto Temple

Kyoto has many surprisingly large temples. It wasn't just the size of the temple buildings. The murals, wax figures, statues and descriptions inside the temple were also detailed. The temples were precise and sophisticated enough to convey the depth of historicity.

Looking closely, it took a lot of time and was also tiring. My wife and I sat down in the shade to relax. Just then, we saw a young Westerner sitting across from us resting in the shade. I approached him and talked to him.

He was a backpacker from Manchester, England. His name was John. He has just graduated from college. He came to Kyoto because he was interested in Buddhism. And his next destination was Thailand, the Buddhist country. When I asked if his major was religious studies, he said that his major was English literature.

I asked him, "Korea has a long Buddhist history and there are many temples. So, do you have any plans to visit Korea?" He said, "I can't afford to go to Korea on this trip because I don't have enough travel expenses." So I asked him again. "Then how long will you be in Thailand?" He said until he ran out of money.

I asked him again. "When and how did you prepare your travel expenses?" Actually, I've been interested in how young people prepare their travel expenses for a long time. This is because Japanese young people and Western young people are very different from Korean young people.

He said he was traveling with the £1,400 he earned as a part-timer and £1,000 his father gave him. I asked him if all British fathers would pay for their children's travel expenses, and he said no. "I was just lucky," he said, shrugging his shoulders and smiling.

I asked him. "Recently, Queen Elizabeth II's funeral was broadcast around the world and I enjoyed it. What do you think about it?" He said that he expressed his deepest condolences to her Queen's passing because all of her family respected the British royal family.

This time he asked me. "Isn't there a queen in Korean history?" I briefly explained to him. “In the ancient history of Korea (1 BC to 7 AD), there were three kingdoms (Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla). However, among them, Silla was the only one that produced two queens.

.

And after unifying the three kingdoms, Silla produced another queen in the 9th century. Also, Buddhism has a long history and tradition as the state religion of the Silla Kingdom.” Hearing my words, he opened his eyes wide and showed interest.

I asked him if he was aware of the recent Helloween incident in Itaewon. He nodded his head and said it was a terrible accident. he continued, “You know, unexpected major accidents happen anywhere, anytime. Yes, I think so,” He said calmly. I asked him. "How do the British celebrate Helloween?" He said he wasn't very interested and said he had only memories of his childhood.

Aside from that, we had a lot to talk about. After talking for almost an hour, I crossed my fingers to wish him good luck. He also told us to have a good trip and parted. In this way, meeting new people while traveling around the world and chatting with them is another fun and rewarding experience.
