People met on my backpacking 106
A story getting dragged into a swindler – 3
.
.
Walking along the road long, he finally said we almost got there. He led me a little further on the other side road. Surprisingly, there was a small two-story building with a beer signboard. Unbelievable! It reminded me of Shinchon called University town in Seoul in 1960s. I followed him with some question. I heard some old pop songs from the second floor such as ¡®Think twice¡¯ and so on. A big changed! Incredible! as he said.
.
Now then, Nasser said to me, ¡°Sorry. I have now only French francs. I should exchange francs for dollars at a bank. So would you wait here for me?¡± He added that it would take some time to go to the bank. I thought he worried about money for beer. Said to him, ¡°Don¡¯t worry about beer. It¡¯s on me.¡± ¡°Really? I appreciate it but I will return it to you tomorrow morning.¡± How courteous and sincere, was he, he looked ever so smart and honest. Felt sorry for doubting him for a while.
.
The bar was upstairs. When stepping up, I was surprised again. There were four tables, and two guys were drinking beer, not bottled but draft. Of course, there was a serving girl, too. Unimaginable! Felt amazing myself as if I discovered a new world. Frist, he ordered 3 bottles. After finished them and then I ordered 3 bottles more with some kind of snack.
.
She brought some dried fruit I didn¡¯t know. Asked him what it was, he said it¡¯s olive fruit. The ambiance or the atmosphere of the hall seemed ok, just like a bar in Seoul. Yes, a bar with a serving girl in the Muslim land were there, but I¡¯ve never thought of it. It was the moment when my fixed idea broke up. Maybe this shocking reaction wouldn¡¯t have happened if I first visited Cairo Egypt before here. I mean Egypt was already quite opened.
.
Enjoyed talking over drinking beer. Especially, his story about seafaring life was quite interesting to me. For example, when he's staying in Amsterdam, he said, he felt free to enjoy sexual liberty such as red-light district, sex museum, adult goods, and so on. He also seemed to be very envious of their open enlightenment about their liberal living culture and economic wealth.
.
When we share a conversation for a long time, we can naturally catch each other¡¯s view of history (country, world). There¡¯s no exception to this guy. While criticizing the Western world, the Christian culture and the capitalist system, he also showed a duality of envy of the world of advanced civilization they created. Perhaps this is not a rational domain of human beings but an instinctual part, I thought.
.
Meanwhile, I wanted to listen to him what he felt about Korea. According to him, he worked with a Korean for a year, so I wondered if he had a new idea and image about Korea. Nothing special but only praising Korea, ¡°Korea made a miracle. I¡¯m envious of Korea. Thanks to your great leaders, your country, Korea became one of the richest countries from the poorest country. Koreans are very smart. They speak well, talkative. Very diligent. I Know Koreans are heavy drinkers... etc.¡±
.
Well, I think, nobody would reject him who kept praising your country. Anyway, his word, "All of the African leaders are surely rotten, corrupted. We can be rich if we wisely select leaders just like your country, Korea." His saying reminded me of especially when watching the tragedy of Africa (children's struggling to survive in living hell) on TV.
.
He suddenly asked me about my schedule. Told him that I would visit Algeria through Marrakech and then to Libya or Tunisia. Then he surprisingly offered me to use his friend¡¯s ship for free. Also, he said he would give me a ride on his way to Marrakech tomorrow. He said, ¡°Of course, you don¡¯t have to pay anything but just enjoy your trip with me.¡±
.
Again, said he, ¡°You can stay a few days in my own house. Because my family like foreigners.¡± Well, the more I heard him the more I was confused in mind, should I accepted him or not, I really didn¡¯t know what to do. Terrible mental conflicts were constantly occurring in me. How far should I trust him? The result would be one of them, if I were lucky, I could see their genuine culture, or else surely robbed me of everything and killed.
.
I felt the extreme of conflict in his last suggestion. Saying, ¡°My aunt gives a party for me at home at 7 this evening. It's a kind of celebrating my safe return. It's a Moroccan tradition.¡± And then he smoothly changed the subject. He always led me like this, leaving something exciting that I couldn¡¯t make my mind easily. Saying again, ¡°Oh, you don¡¯t have to think too deeply. It¡¯s ok. Join me or not, that¡¯s no problem. It¡¯s up to you.¡± He never showed me any compulsion or emotion. This guy seemed to have already grasped my nature and taste. Otherwise, he couldn¡¯t keep on stimulating my curiosity.
.
His nephew said nothing at all but sitting on the chair with his sunglasses on. He didn¡¯t drink much. What on earth is this guy¡¯s identity? A real college student? Strange enough but I just ignored him. On the other hand, Nasser was still in the midst of the conversation and didn¡¯t have any burden on me. My conflicts were in a situation where I couldn¡¯t get out of hand. If his words were true, I would be a lucky guy who experienced the real traditional Moroccan culture, and if not? It could be a horrible thing to even think about.
.
.
Thanks. Good Luck!
.
