사마라칸트에서 우리가 묵는 숙소는 자칭(自稱) 호텔이라고 하나 우리식으로 보면 장급(莊級) 숙소다. 2층 건물에 방이 여섯 개 정도. 주인인 50대 부부는 그들의 딸과 사위 그리고 10학년생(한국의 고2)인 손자(孫子) 외 세 명의 손주들과 함께 거주하면서 숙소를 운영한다. 60년대까지 한국도 그러했듯이 전형적인 농경시대의 대가족 제도이다. 이들과 숙소의 마당에서 얘길 하다 보면 특히 장모(丈母)는 마당에서 잔일을 하고 있는 사위를 가리키며 그를 한국에 갈 수 있도록 도와달라고 한다. 물론 그의 딸도 마찬가지. 아니 그의 딸은 더 적극적이다. 자기 남편이 한국에 가서 5년만 벌어 오면 모든 문제가 다 풀린단다.

실제로 그런 사례를 들 땐, 옆에서 듣기에 민망할 정도다. 성격이 좀 괄괄한 장모는 자기 딸이 통역하는 것이 마땅치 않은 듯, 자기 스마트폰의 구글 통역기로 나에게 직접 호소하듯 말하곤 했다. 암튼 그 사위는 무서운 장모와 딸(그의 아내)의 등쌀에 곧 어디론가 떠밀려 갈 것 같다. 사실 이와 비슷한 경험을 인도 베트남 스리랑카 등에서도 여러 번 해봤지만, 항상 부담스러웠다. 한마디로 원조(援助)를 받던 나라에서 원조하는 나라가 된 입장에서 상대의 기분과 자존심을 고려해 말과 표정 관리에 신경을 써야 했기 때문이다.

격세지감(隔世之感)! 즐거운 비명(悲鳴)이란 이런 게 아닐까. 의식주(衣食住) 어느 하나도 미국 등 외국으로부터 원조 없이는 생존이 어려웠던 시대를 살아 본 입장에서, 어느 날부터 원조하는 나라의 大韓民國 국민이 되어 세계로부터 도움을 요청받는 시대를 살아본다는 기분과 그 행복감을 쉽게 표현하기 어렵다. 성공한 大韓民國이 자랑스럽고 감사할 뿐이다.

우리 숙소 근처엔 조그만 식품 가게가 하나 있다. 생수(生水)와 음료수 과일 등 군것질(snacking)거리를 사러 하루에 한 번은 간다. 그런데 오늘은 이 가게 앞에서 주인 양반(40대)이 망가진 스탠드 선풍기를 꺼내 놓고 이리저리 돌려가며 만지작거리고 있었다. 얘길 들어보니 중국산 중고 선풍기를 구입해 가게에서 쓰던 것인데 실수로 땅바닥에 넘어뜨렸다는 것. 그 뒤로 작동(作動)이 안 된다고. 평소에도 스위치가 말썽이었다며 그것을 뜯어보고 싶어 했다. 물어보니 그는 기계에 문외한(門外漢)이었다. 내가 점검해볼 테니 드라이버를 가져오라고 했다. 그가 말한 대로 스위치에 연결된 전선(電線)이 접속 불량 상태였다. 이걸 고치려면 적어도 니퍼 (nipper)라는 공구가 있어야 하는데 그게 없었다. 대신 가위를 사용해 어찌어찌 결국 해냈다. 옆에서 구경하던 사람도 나를 신기한 듯 쳐다보며 웃고 이 주인 양반도 좋아서 싱글벙글했다.

한때 생존(生存) 수단으로 배워두었던 전기기술(電氣技術)은 오늘처럼 세계 여행 중에도 그 기술을 십분(十分) 발휘해 그들에게 도움을 줄 때가 많다. 이런 경험 역시 한둘이 아니다. 물론 대부분이 낙후(落後)된 나라에 한한다. 이집트, 파키스탄, 인도 남부의 시골, 라오스, 잠비아 등등. 지금도 드라이버와 니퍼 등 기본 공구(工具)만 있으면 웬만한 것은 고친다. 가령 집안에 전깃줄이 엉성하게 늘어져 있어 위험하거나, 전등이 필요한 곳과 벽에 콘센트를 설치해 주는 등등. 실제로 2001년 911테러 이전엔 내 배낭에 항상 스위스나이프를 포함 기본 공구가 들어 있었다. 이처럼 전기기술도 영어와 마찬가지로 항상 나에게도 남에게도 기쁨을 주는 평생 나의 친구요 동반자(同伴者)이다.

**이 숙소의 최대 장점은 지근거리(至近距離)에 사라마칸트의 양대(兩大) 명물, 레기스탄 광장과 비비-하눔 모스크가 있다는 것이다.

People met on my backpacking 159 - Electrical technology and English are my lifelong friends

Although the lodging in Samarakant had a hotel sign on it, in our opinion, it was a somewhat higher general-level lodging. The hotel has two stories and roughly six rooms. With their daughter, son-in-law, and three grandchildren, including a 10th grader (2nd year high school student in Korea), the owners, a couple in their fifties, was living there and ran the business. There was a normal extended family system in the agricultural era, much as there had been in Korea up to the 1960s. The agricultural era also included a standard extended family structure. The mother-in-law specifically referred to her son-in-law, who was working in the hotel yard doing chores, and begged me for assistance in going to Korea when we were talking with them there. Of course, her daughter also did. No, her daughter eagerly desired it. All of our issues will be resolved right away if my husband travels to Korea and works there for five years to earn money, she claimed.

When she actually told such a case, it was embarrassing for me to hear from the side. His mother-in-law, whose personality is a bit outspoken, used to appeal directly to me through the Google translator on her smartphone, as if her daughter wasn't worthy of an interpreter. Anyway, the son-in-law seemed to be pushed somewhere soon by the terrifying mother-in-law and daughter (his wife)'s annoyance. In fact, I have had similar experiences several times in India, Vietnam and Sri Lanka, but it was always burdensome. In a word, it was because I became a citizen of the donor country in a country that received aid. So I had to manage my words and facial expressions in consideration of the other person's mood and pride.

The world has changed! In a word, I let out a joyful scream. I lived by receiving aid from foreign countries, including the United States, for most of my clothes, food, and housing. However, one day, I became a citizen of the Republic of Korea in a country that aids. It's hard for me to express my feelings and happiness. I am proud and thankful for a successful S. Korea.

There was a small grocery store near our accommodations. I went there once a day to buy bottled water, drinks, fruit, and other snacks. But today, in front of this store, the owner, a man in his 40s, took out a broken stand fan and was fiddling around with it. I heard that he bought a used fan made in China and used it at a store, but accidentally knocked it to the ground. After that, it doesn't work. He said that the switch was usually a problem and wanted to open it. When I asked him about the machine, he had no knowledge of it. So I told him to bring me the screwdriver. As he said, the wire connected to the switch was in bad shape. He needed at least a tool called a nipper to fix this, but he didn't have one. Instead, I somehow ended up fixing it with scissors. The person watching from the side also looked at me curiously and laughed, and the owner was also delighted with a big smile.

As for electrical technology, which I once learned as a means of survival, there are many times, like today, while traveling around the world, when I use that skill to the fullest to help others. This experience is not unique. Of course, most of them are limited to underdeveloped countries. Egypt, Pakistan, rural South India, Laos, Zambia, and so on Even now, I can fix most things with basic tools such as screwdrivers and nippers. For example, when electric wires are loosely hanging indoors or when there is a need for electric lights indoors, they are installed. In fact, before the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001, I always had basic tools, including a Swiss knife, in my backpack. Therefore, electrical technology and English, have always been my lifelong friend and companion that makes others happy.

**The greatest advantage of this accommodation was that it was within a short distance of the two major attractions of Saramakand, Registan Square and Bibi-Hanum Mosque.
