매년 여름이면 원하든 원치 않든 보고 듣는 말과 글이 있다. 그래서 더 이상 보고 싶지 않아도 보게 된다. 보신탕(개고기)이다. 이와 관련 국내는 물론 외국에서 직접 경험한 많은 얘깃거리가 있다. 그중 미국에서 있었던 경험담 중 하나를 소개한다.

1999년, 여행이 아닌 업무로 워싱턴D.C.에 갈 일이 있었다. 일을 마친 뒤 여분의 시간을 이용해 몇 년 전에 관람했지만, 또 보고 싶은 곳이 있어 그곳을 찾았다. 스미소니언 국립 박물관이었다. (*스미소니언 국립 박물관은 1858년에 설립. 역사, 과학, 예술 및 총체적 미국 문화의 다양성을 실감나게 입체적으로 보여주는 곳이다. 자연사 박물관은 1억5천만 개 이상의 표본을 보유함. 무료입장.)

박물관의 규모나 내용물들이 어찌나 방대(厖大)한지 몇 년 전에도 그랬지만 거의 종일 봐도 어림도 없다. 지쳐서 나왔다. 배도 고팠다. 근처 스낵코너에서 핫도그로 허기를 채우고 있었다. 그때 내 옆에 50대 중반의 한국인 남자가 다가와 말을 걸었다. 항상 내가 먼저 말을 거는데 이런 예외도 있다. 암튼, 그는 미국에 이민 온 지 30년이 다 돼 간다고 했다. 두 명의 고등학생 자녀가 있다며 자기 소개를 했다. 그는 버지니아에 거주하며 핫도그 등 식료품을 공급하는 사업가였다. 한국 소식도 밝고 인맥(人脈)이 넓었다. 모국(母國)의 정치에 관심이 많았다. 얘기가 길어졌다. 당시는 DJ정권, IMF 사태로 ‘금 모으기 운동’이세계 뉴스가 되던 때였다.

그때 마침 중년의 미국인 부부가 각각 애완견(愛玩犬)을 데리고 스낵코너에 다가왔다. 그들은 핫도그를 몇 개 구매해 자기들도 먹고 그들 애완견에게도 먹였다. 이 광경을 본 그 교민은 고개를 저으며 내게 말했다. “개라면 꼴도 보기 싫습니다. 저놈들 때문에 자식들과 원수가 됐거든요.” 그는 계속 말을 이었다. “하루는 이놈들이 나 때문에 창피해서 학교를 못 다니겠다는 겁니다.” 내용이 그럴듯해서 세심히 들었다.

즉, 당시, 미국 언론에 한국 교민이 개를 잡아먹다 미국 당국에 적발됐고, 그것이 뉴스를 탄 것이다. 특히 감수성(感受性)이 예민한 미국 청소년들에겐 분노를 일으켰고 그 분위기는 한국계 미국인인 그 아이들에게 직접 영향을 미친 것이다. 국적(國籍)은 바꿀 수 있어도 얼굴은 바꿀 수 없는 법. “한국인들은 다 개를 잡아먹느냐?” “한국인들은 어떻게 미국인이 된 뒤에도 개를 계속 잡아 먹는냐?” 하물며 어떤 아이들은 노골적으로 인종차별(人種差別) 발언까지 했다는 것이다. 학교 친구들이 한국인들을 싸잡아 마치 야만인(野蠻人) 쳐다보듯 했다는 것이다. (*1980년대 초반까지 서울 북한산 계곡에서 개 도살 현장을 볼 수 있었다.)

재미 교민들 다수는 모국애가 강하다. 그 역시 그랬다. 그는 아이들에게 한국인들이 개고기를 먹게 된 역사적 배경을 설명하며 이해시키려 노력했다. 보신탕은 한국의 전통 식문화가 된 것이니 부끄러워할 것 없다고. 그러나 설득은커녕 사태는 더 악화됐다는 것이다. 미국 학교에서 미국적 가치관을 배우며 자란 아이들이 한국적 정서를 이해할 수도 없겠지만, 설령 아버지의 주장이 옳다고 해도 미국 사회, 미국적 정서에 부합(符合)될 수가 없다는 것이 현실이었다. 이미 이성(理性)과 논리(論理)로 무장된 고등학생인 자식들을 이길 재간이 없었다. 한국식으로 고집을 피우고 우긴다고 될 일이 아니었다. 그렇다고 자신의 주장을 철회할 마음은 전혀 없다고 했다. 부모와 자식 간의 감정이 되돌릴 수 없을 만큼 심각한 상태에 있다며 탄식을 했다. (*많은 경우, 미국 이민 목적은 교육, 자녀의 미래를 위해서라고 한다.)

본인은 개고기를 먹지 않는다고 했다. 그러나 미국에선 불법인 걸 뻔히 알면서도 개고기 향수(鄕愁)를 잊지 못해 감행(敢行)하는 교민들이 더러 있다고 했다. 대부분 적발이 안 된다고. 나는 그의 말을 듣고 내가 몇 년 전에 메릴랜드에서 직접 경험한 얘길 들려주었다. 우연히 교민들과 어울리던 중, 하루는 교민 몇 명과 함께 승용차에 개를 한 마리 싣고 인적이 드문 산 속에 들어갔다. 그곳에서 감쪽같이 개를 처리해(강제로 입에 소금을 상당한 양 집어넣었다) 고기를 나누는 걸 봤다고 했더니 그는 마치 잘 알고 있다는 듯이 고개를 끄덕일 뿐 말이 없었다. 그 의미가 무엇인지 나는 아직 잘 모른다. 한국인의 자존심? 한국인의 모국 사랑? 한국 고유의 문화 전통에 대한 자긍심? 한국인 특유의 오기와 근성? (*개고기가 미국까지 쫓아와 부자지간(父子之間) 연(緣)을 끊을 만큼 강한 힘을 보여준 사례였다.)

Every summer, whether I want it or not, I have words and writings that I see and hear, so even if I don't want to see it anymore, I see it again: Bosintang (dog meat). In this regard, I have a lot of things to talk about in person, not only in Korea but also in foreign countries, including one of my experiences in the United States.

In 1999, I had to go to Washington, D.C. to work rather than travel. After finishing my duties, I took the opportunity to explore the Smithsonian National Museum which I had seen previously. (*The Smithsonian National Museum was established in 1858. It shows the richness of history, science, art, and American culture in three dimensions. The Natural History Museum has around 150 million specimens. Admission is free.

The museum's size and contents were super huge. It wasn't good enough for me, even though I looked at it virtually all day. I walked out weary and hunger. I was satisfying my appetite with hot dogs from a neighboring snack stand. Then a Korean man in his mid-50s approached and spoke with me. He said he came to USA thirty years. He mentioned he had two high school kids. He was a businessman. He was interested in Korean politics. It was a period of the DJ government. The IMF crises made international headlines for 'gathering gold'.

Then a middle-aged American couple entered the snacks section, each with their own dog. They bought some hot dogs to feed to their pets. The Korean resident shook his head and told me, "I don't want to look at pets. They made me an enemy to my children." He kept going: "One day, my kids told em they were so embarrassed because of me and they couldn't go to school." I listened closely since the tale was credible.

In other words, US officials caught a Korean person eating dogs, that made headlines. This sparked outrage, particularly among young Americans, and it had a direct impact on Korean-American kids. They could alter their nationality but not their looks. "Do Koreans eat dogs all?" "How do Koreans keep eating dogs even after they become Americans?" Some kids even made outright racial comments. His kids said that their schoolmates treated Koreans as barbarians.

Many Koreans in the United States have great feelings for their homeland. So did he. He tried to make his kids understand the roots of Korean people eating dog meat. He told them there's nothing to be embarrassed about, as Bosintang is a traditional Korean culture. However, he was unable to persuade his kids. It's because his children were already equipped with American-style reasoning and logic. However, he stated that he had no intention of removing his opinions. His family appeared to be in a critical state.

He said he didn't eat dog meat. However, he stated that a tiny percentage of Koreans continue to consume dog meat. When I heard him, I informed him about my personal experience in Maryland a few years before. By coincidence, I traveled into the deserted mountain with a dog in a car with several Korean people. I told him I observed Koreans processing dogs and sharing meat with one another. He nodded, as if he knew the truth well. I'm not sure what that means yet. Is this Korean pride? Or is he referring to dog meat as a Korean cultural tradition? Who knows?
