부부 배낭여행과 남편의 무거운 책임감
여행 중 만난 사람들 210 – 배낭여행과 자유여행의 차이점…자유는 공짜가 아니다.

우리는 우연히 점심 때 삿포로 ‘스시’집에서 싱가포르인 부부 배낭여행자를 만났다. 공교롭게도 동갑내기였다. 동시대(同時代)를 산 세대로서 공감대가 많았다. 우리가 겪은 60년대와 그들이 겪은 60년대와 같았기 때문. 말이 통했다. 가난이 뭔지, 약소국가(弱小國家)로서의 서러움, 정직하고 유능한 지도자, 투철한 반공정신(反共精神)으로 무장된 강력한 지도자가 왜 절실(切實)했는지 등등.

나는 평소 아시아의 네 마리 용(한국,대만,싱가포르,홍콩)이란 말을 좋아했다. 사실 등소평의 흑묘백묘론(黑猫白猫論)도 여기서 나왔다. 중공(中共)이 세계의 공장으로 변신해 국부를 쌓은 배경이다. 어쨌든 당시 아시아의 네 마리 용은 세계를 놀라게 했다. 당연했다. 아시아에서 일본에 이어 근대화에 성공했기 때문. 이는, 제2차 세계대전 이후 80여 개국 이상이 독립했지만 자립할 의지도 능력도 없을 때, 아시아의 4마리 용이 등장, 기적적으로 경제를 급성장(急成長)시켰음을 뜻한다.

우리 부부는 싱가포르가 성공한 배경을 직접 당사자에게서 듣고 싶었다. 그러나 싱가포르인 부부의 관심은 우리의 세계 배낭여행에 관한 것이었다. 우리가 이분들을 통해 재확인한 것은 앞에서 이미 전한 바와 같다. 실용(實用)교육의 중요성이었다. 그중 하나가 영어 교육, 국민의 90% 이상이 영어 소통에 자유롭다고 했다. 이는 사실이었다. 우리가 이미 여러 번 싱가포르를 여행할 때 경험했지만, 그들은 남녀노소 모두 영어에 능했다. 정말 부러웠다. 이런 사실을 교육부 고위직에 있었던 당사자에게 직접 들었다. 더 재미있고 실감이 났다.

다음은 이분들의 여행에 관한 얘기이다. 이들 부부는 배낭여행 초보 단계였다. 작년에 2주간 미국과 캐나다에서 부부 배낭여행을 하고 올해 처음 삿포르에 온 것이 다다. 미국과 캐나다를 선택한 것은 영어 사용국이기 때문. 예상 적중, 언어 문제가 없으니 자신감이 생겼다. 그러나 진짜 문제는 그 다음부터다. 숙소를 벗어나 자유롭게 산책을 하고 이동할 때마다 겁이 났다. 숙소에서 멀어질수록 더했다. 주변을 먼저 살피게 됐다. 경계심과 긴장감을 느꼈다. 아내 때문이었다. 남편으로서, 보호자로서 막중한 책임감을 느낀 것이다. 단체 여행에선 없었던 것이었다. 전문 가이드가 있었기 때문이다.

우리 부부는 세계 배낭여행을 언제 시작했으며, 어디 어디를 가 봤으며, 가장 위험한 곳은 어디였으며, 사건·사고가 있었다면 어떤 것인지, 사고 원인은 무엇이며 사고 수습은 어떻게 했는지, 또다시 가고 싶은 곳이 있다면 어느 곳이며, 다시는 가고 싶지 않은 곳이 있다면 어디이며, 영어만으로 세계 여행이 가능한지 등등. 그 남편은 이 말을 덧붙였다. 우리는 세계 부부 배낭여행을 마치는 단계이고, 자기들은 이제 시작하는 단계라고. 그래서 우리 경험담을 많이 듣고 싶다고.

*우리의 답:
첫 부부 배낭여행은 1999년 인도였다. 그 뒤, 기회가 나는 대로 떠났다. 삼 대양, 육 대륙을 짧게 혹은 길게 대부분 다 구경했다. 장거리 기차 여행은 45일짜리 유레일패스로 유럽 전역을, 시베리아 횡단 열차로 울란바토르에서 모스크바까지, 암트랙으로 LA에서 뉴욕까지, 인도 뉴델리에서 마두라이까지, 중국 길림에서 곤명까지, 버스 여행은 브라질 상 파올로에서 아르헨티나 우수아이아까지, 남아공 요하네스버그에서 케이프타운까지, 우간다 캄팔라에서 레소토까지, 등 대부분 하루 이상 길게는 3~4일 걸리는 거리였다. 인도 콜카타에서 안다만섬까지 4일 걸리는 선박(배) 여행도 했다.

사기(詐欺), 도난(盜難), 강도(強盜), 무례(無禮)한 행동 등을 당해 본 나라들(모코코, 이집트, 남아공, 우간다, 튀니지, 러시아, 벨라루스, 터키, 이스라엘, 루마니아, 독일, 스페인, 프랑스, 미국, 페루, 인도, 필리핀, 중국, 브라질, 멕시코, 요르단, 파키스탄, 시리아 등). 식중독(食中毒)으로 고생한 곳(인도, 필리핀, 태국, 코타키나발루 등). 자정(子正)에 아내가 갑자기 고열과 복통을 일으켜 응급차로 병원 입원한 적도 있고 심한 멀미로 고통을 치르기도. 안전사고로 고생한 곳(터키, 태국, 이스라엘 등), 다시 가고 싶지 않은 나라는 사회 공산주의 나라들. 다시 가서 보고 싶은 곳은 미얀마의 이라와디강, 인도의 안다만섬, 프랑스의 아미엥과 루르드 등이다. 언어는 대체로 영어면 무난(無難)함.

지금까지 우리는 부부 배낭여행을 꽤 오래 했다. 여행 중 만나는 수많은 사람들, 한국인 여행자 포함 외국인 여행자로부터 부럽다는 말을 많이 들었다. 그러나 이번에 만난 싱가포르인 부부, 특히 남편으로부터 극찬(極讚)에 가까운 칭찬과 부러움을 사 본 적은 없다. 흥미로운 건 그가 가장 많이 사용한 단어들이었다(brave, courageous, cowardly, chicken-hearted). 결국, 이 남편도 자유여행을 하는 동안 스스로 용기(勇氣) 없는 겁쟁이가 될 수밖에 없음을 토로(吐露)한 것이다. 아내의 안전이 제일 중요했기 때문이다. 절대 공감!!!
그렇다. 세계 부부 배낭여행, 즐겁고 보람 있다. 그러나 시간적 여유와 선택의 자유를 누리는 만큼 위험도 따른다. 언어 소통 문제, 숙소와 관련한 문제, 교통편, 식사문제, 안전사고, 식중독 등 갑자기 병이 났을 때, 그리고 불량배와 사기꾼 강도 등이 어디선가 지켜보고 있다는 불안감 등이 그렇다. 단체 여행에선 불필요한 걱정들이다. 실제로 사고가 났을 때 응급처치와 비상대책 등은 전문 가이드의 책임이기 때문이다. 자유여행과 큰 차이점이다. 아내의 식성(食性)이 너무 까다롭다든지, 멀미를 심하게 한다든지, 오래 걷지를 못하는 등 예상치 못한 복병(伏兵)이 많다. 보호자로서 잠시도 방심(放心)할 수 없다. 자유는 절대 공짜가 아님을 깨닫게 된다. 그분들에게 괜찮다는 등 무책임한 말을 함부로 할 수 없었던 이유였다.

(*경험에 의하면, 좀 우스운 현상이지만, 부모(父母)세대는 나이를 잊은 채 보다 자유롭고 모험적인 세계 여행을 원한다. 특히 여성이 더 한 것 같다. 이번 싱가포르인 부인도 그랬다. 자식 (子息)세대는 다르다. 덜 모험적이다. 좋은 예로 외국인이 운영하는 게스트하우스를 들 수 있다. 이용자의 절대다수는 일본인을 포함 서구인들이다. 한국 젊은이들은 드물다. 설령 있어도 어울리지 않아서 존재감이 없다. 한국인 혹은 조선족이 운영하는 게스트하우스(민박)에 모인다. 영어가 필요 없는 곳이다.)

We happened to meet a Singaporean couple backpacking at a sushi restaurant in Sapporo for lunch. They were the same age as us. As members of our generation, we felt a lot of sympathy. It was the same '60s that we went through and they went through. Easy to talk. We understood poverty, sadness as a weak nation, and the urgent need for an honest, competent, and powerful leader equipped with a strong anti-communist attitude. And so forth.

I was fond of the phrase "four Asian dragons" (Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, and Hong Kong). At the time, the four Asian dragons astounded the globe. They were successful in modernizing Asia after Japan. This implies that after World War II, when more than 80 nations gained independence but were unwilling or unable to stand on their own, the four Asian dragons rose swiftly.

We wanted to hear directly from them about Singapore's progress, while they wanted to hear our world backpacking. It was true that their practical education made more than 90% of people to speak freely in English. This was correct. We had previously experienced it on many trips to Singapore. They spoke English fluently, regardless of gender. I envied them.

The following is a tale of their worldwide journey. They were in the beginning stages of backpacking. They spent two weeks backpacking around the USA and Canada last year. They visited Sapporo for the first time this year. They selected the USA and Canada since they were English-speaking countries. They acquired confidence because they did not have linguistic problems. The actual trouble occurred after that. The more they got away from the hotel, the more he became afraid. It was due to his wife. As spouse and guardian, he felt a strong feeling of obligation.

Our first backpacking trip was to India in 1999. Then we experimented whenever we could. We visited practically every country in the globe, either briefly or extensively. Long-distance train travel includes trips across Europe using the 45-day Eurail Pass, from Ulaanbaatar to Moscow. Amtrak travels from Los Angeles to New York, New Delhi to Madurai in India, Jilin to Gonming in China, Sao Paolo in Brazil to Usuaia in Argentina, Johannesburg in S. Africa to Cape Town, Uganda, and Kampala to Lesotho. They usually took more than three or four days. It also took four days to go by boat from Kolkata, India, to Andaman Islands.

Countries where we have been cheated, stolen, robbed, or abused include (Morocco, Egypt, South Africa, Uganda, Tunisia, Russia, Belarus, Turkey, Israel, Romania, Germany, Spain, France, USA, Peru, India, the Philippines, China, Brazil, Mexico, Jordan, Pakistan, and Syria etc.) Food poisoning locations (India, Philippines, Thailand, Kota Kinabalu, etc.) My wife developed a high temperature and stomach ache at midnight and was sent to the hospital in an emergency car, where she suffered from terrible pain. Places that have had safety incidents (Turkey, Thailand, Israel, etc.) and countries that we do not want to visit again are social and communist nations. We'd want to revisit the Irrawaddy River in Myanmar, Andaman Island in India, and Amiens and Lourdes in France. English is a relatively safe worldwide language.

We've been backpacking for quite a while. Countless locals I've met on my tour, as well as international travelers, including Koreans, have expressed jealousy. However, I've never been lauded big or envied by a Singaporean couple, whom I met this time. Interestingly, he used the phrases the most (brave, couragious, cowardly, and chicen-hearted). After all, he admitted that he had no alternative but to be a coward without guts when moving freely. It's because his wife's safety was the most crucial consideration. Complete agree with him!!!

That's correct. Backpacking is enjoyable and fulfilling. There are hazards associated with having more time and freedom of choice. These include linguistic communication issues, accommodations, transportation, meal problems, safety incidents, food poisoning, and fear that bullies and criminals are watching from someplace. These are unnecessary concerns for group trips. This is because they are in charge of numerous accidents, including first aid when an accident happens. It differs from free travel. As a husband, as a wife's protector, cannot let his guard down. This was why I couldn't say something reckless to them.

(*In my experience, it's a little amusing, but the generation of parents has forgotten their age and desires a more liberated and exciting journey across the world. It appears that women in particular did more. So did the Singaporean wife this time. The generation of children is distinct. They are less adventurous. A excellent example is guesthouses managed by foreigners. The overwhelming majority of users are Westerners, including Japanese. Young Koreans are scarce. Even if they do, they assemble in guesthouses owned by Koreans who do not need English.)
