The Events in Egypt: A Worldview Perspective . Tumultuous events like we¡¯re witnessing now always raise the issue of the return of Christ, the fulfillment of biblical prophecy. . ->¾ðÁ¦µçÁö Áßµ¿(ñéÔÔ, Middle East)¿¡¼ À§±â»çŰ¡ ¹ß»ýÇϸé, ¸¹Àº ±âµ¶±³Àε鿡°Ô ¿ì¼±ÀûÀ¸·Î ¶°¿À¸£´Â »ý°¢Àº Á¾¸»(ðûØÇ)À̶ó´Â °ÍÀÔ´Ï´Ù. None of us know the time and place of Christ¡¯s return, as He Himself told us we wouldn¡¯t. So while there may be speculation, I think the most urgent question posed by what is happening in Egypt and elsewhere in the Middle East today is ¡®What are the worldview implications of all of this?¡¯ . ->±×¸®½ºµµÀÇ ´Ù½Ã¿À½ÉÀÇ ½Ã°£°ú Àå¼Ò´Â, ±×ºÐ ÀÚ½ÅÀÌ ¿ì¸®´Â ¾Ë ¼ö ¾ø´Ù°í ¸»¾¸Çϼ̵íÀÌ, ¿ì¸® Áß ±× ´©±¸µµ ¾ËÁö ¸øÇÕ´Ï´Ù. ±×·¡¼, ¸¹Àº ÃßÃøµéÀÌ ³¹«ÇÏ´Â °¡¿îµ¥, Àú´Â ÃÖ±Ù ÀÌÁýÆ®¿Í Áßµ¿¿¡¼ ÀϾ°í ÀÖ´Â Àϵ鿡 ´ëÇÏ¿© °¡Àå ±ä¹ÚÇÑ Áú¹®Àº 'ÀÌ ¸ðµç »ç°Ç¿¡ ¿¬°üµÇ¾î ÀÖ´Â ¼¼°è°üÀû ¾Ï½Ã(äÞãÆ)´Â ¹«¾ùÀΰ¡?'¶ó°í »ý°¢ÇÕ´Ï´Ù. . The most obvious concern raised is whether this will fuel what Samuel Huntington described as the clash of civilizations. Huntington, in his book by that title in the mid-90s, predicted that the great titanic struggle of the 21st century would be between Islam and western culture formed by Judeo-Christian tradition. . ->1. °¡Àå ¸í¹éÇÏ°Ô ¿ì·ÁµÇ´Â Á¡Àº ÀÌ »ç°ÇÀ¸·Î ÀÎÇØ »ç¹«¿¤ ÇåÆÃÅÏÀÌ ¼³¸íÇß´ø "¹®ÈÃæµ¹"ÀÌ ºÎÃß°Ü Áú °ÍÀÎÁö¿¡ ÀÖ½À´Ï´Ù. 90³â´ë Á߹ݿ¡ Ãâ½ÃµÈ "¹®ÈÃæµ¹"À̶ó´Â Á¦¸ñÀÇ ÀÚ½ÅÀÇ Ã¥¿¡¼ ÇåÆÃÅÏÀº, 21¼¼±â¿¡ ±âµ¶±³ ÀüÅë¿¡ ÀÇÇØ Çü¼ºµÈ ¼¾ç¹®È¿Í À̽½¶÷ »çÀÌ¿¡ °Å´ëÇϰí Å« ºÐÅõ°¡ ÀϾ°Ô µÉ °ÍÀ̶ó°í ¿¹ÃøÇß½À´Ï´Ù. . There could be no grimmer outcome from the current turmoil than for the Muslim Brotherhood to gain the upper hand in Egypt, and Islamist parties to gain ground in Jordan, Tunisia, Lebanon, and elsewhere. Hamas, which is after all a subsidiary of the Muslim Brotherhood, has already had some successes in Lebanon. . ->ÃÖ±Ù ¼Ò¿ä»çÅÂÀÇ °á»çÀûÀÎ ¼º°úº¸´Ù ´õ ¹«½½¸²ÇüÁ¦´ÜÀ¸·Î ÇÏ¿©±Ý ÀÌÁýÆ®¿¡¼ ¿ì¼¼ÇÑ À§Ä¡¸¦ È®º¸ÇÏ°Ô Çϰí, À̽½¶÷Àû Á¤´çµé·Î ÇÏ¿©±Ý ¿ä¸£´Ü, Æ¢´ÏÁö, ·¹¹Ù³í, ±×¸®°í ´Ù¸¥ Áö¿ª¿¡¼ ±â¹ÝÀ» ¸¶·ÃÇØÁÖ´Â °ÍÀº ¾øÀ» °ÍÀÔ´Ï´Ù. ·¹¹Ù³í¿¡¼´Â ¹ú½á, ¹«½½¸²ÇüÁ¦´ÜÀÇ º¸Á¶°ÝÀÏ »ÓÀÎ, Çϸ¶½ºÀÇ ¼º°ø»ç·ÊµéÀÌ ÀÖ¾ú½À´Ï´Ù. . Christians should understand the fundamental differences between Islam and Christianity. We can¡¯t be very good advocates of our own belief system if we can¡¯t draw that comparison in a very honest and sincere way. We also are obligated to distinguish radical Islam, that is the jihadist movement, from peace-loving Muslims. This is not only a matter of being fair and objective in our evaluation, it¡¯s a matter of not fanning the flames of what could turn into a worldwide conflagration. The best estimate I¡¯ve heard (in conversation with a prominent pollster) of the number of Muslims who are in sympathy with the jihadist movement is 18 percent. We do know that maybe 10 percent of the Muslims in Egypt are part of the Muslim Brotherhood. That could be a decisive bloc. . ->±âµ¶±³ÀεéÀº ¹Ýµå½Ã À̽½¶÷°ú ±âµ¶±³ÀÇ ±Ùº»ÀûÀÎ Â÷ÀÌÁ¡À» ÀÌÇØÇØ¾ß ÇÕ´Ï´Ù. ¿ì¸®°¡ ÀÌ Â÷ÀÌÁ¡¿¡ ´ëÇÏ¿© ¸Å¿ì ÁøÁöÇÏ°í ½Å½ÇÇÏ°Ô ¼³¸íÇÒ ¼ö ¾ø´Ù¸é ¿ì¸®´Â ¿ì¸® ÀÚ½ÅÀÇ ½Å¾Ó°ü(ãáäæκ)¿¡ ´ëÇÏ¿© Á¦´ë·Î ´ëº¯ÇÒ ¼ö ¾ø´Â °ÍÀÔ´Ï´Ù. ¶ÇÇÑ ¿ì¸®´Â ±Ø´ÜÀû À̽½¶÷, Áï, ÁöÇÏµå ¿îµ¿°¡µé°ú Æòȸ¦ »ç¶ûÇÏ´Â ¹«½½¸²-»ç¶÷µéÀ» ±¸ºÐÇÒ Çʿ䰡 ÀÖ½À´Ï´Ù. The second big issue that rises to the fore in all of today¡¯s turmoil is the dignity of human life. Christians believe that all humans**Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, atheists, and everyone else—are created in the image of God. Every human, therefore, has an innate dignity. And God, who Himself has free will, gave the gift of free will to human beings. Free will, the desire to be free, is part of our nature. . ->2. ¿äÁò ÀϾ°í ÀÖ´Â ¸ðµç È¥¶õÀÇ Àü¸é¿¡ ³ªÅ¸³ª°í ÀÖ´Â µÎ¹ø° Å« ¹®Á¦´Â Àΰ£ »ý¸íÀÇ Á¸¾ö¼º¿¡ °üÇÑ °ÍÀÔ´Ï´Ù. ±âµ¶±³ÀÎÀº ¸ðµç Àΰ£µé—±âµ¶±³ÀÎÀ̵ç, À¯´ëÀÎÀ̵ç, ¹«½½¸²À̵ç, ÈòµÎ±³ÀÎÀ̵ç, ¹«½Å·ÐÀÚÀ̵ç, ±× ´©±¸µç—Àº Çϳª´ÔÀÇ Çü»óÀ» µû¶ó âÁ¶µÇ¾ú´Ù´Â °ÍÀ» ¹Ï½À´Ï´Ù. ¸ðµç Àΰ£¿¡°Ô´Â, ±×·¯¹Ç·Î, º»À¯(Üâêó)ÀÇ Á¸¾ö¼ºÀÌ ÀÖ½À´Ï´Ù. What we are witnessing in the Middle East today is the irrepressible desire for freedom that is wired into every human being. The biblical worldview is the only worldview which recognizes this, which clearly sets forth man as created in the image of God with innate dignity. . ->ÃÖ±Ù Áßµ¿¹®Á¦¸¦ ÅëÇؼ ¿ì¸®°¡ ¸ñ°ÝÇϰí ÀÖ´Â °ÍÀº ¸ðµç Àΰ£ ³»¸é¿¡ ÀÌ¹Ì Á¢ÇÕ(ïÈùê)µÇ¾î ÀÖ´Â ÀÚÀ¯¿¡ ´ëÇÑ ¾ï´©¸¦ ¼ö ¾ø´Â ¿¸Á(æðØÐ)ÀÔ´Ï´Ù. ¿ÀÁ÷ ¼º°æÀûÀÎ ¼¼°è°ü¿¡¼¸¸ ¹Ù·Î ÀÌÁ¡¿¡ ´ëÇÑ ÀνÄ, ´Ù½Ã ¸»Çؼ, Àΰ£ÀÌ Çϳª´ÔÀÇ Çü»óÀ» µû¶ó âÁ¶µÇ¾úÀ¸¸ç º»À¯ÀÇ Á¸¾ö¼ºÀ» Áö´Ñ Á¸Àç¶ó´Â Á¡À» ¸íÈ®ÇÏ°Ô Áø¼úÇÕ´Ï´Ù. . In cultures which are informed by Judeo-Christian truth therefore, there is a built-in respect for human beings and human freedom—we do see this as a self-evident truth (as we read in the Declaration of Independence) no other worldview sees human beings this way. So no other worldview forms its governing structures in a way to cause freedom to flourish. This is one of the things that distinguishes a culture informed by Christian revelation from one that is not. . ->±×·¯¹Ç·Î ±âµ¶±³ Áø¸®¿¡ ÀÇÇØ ¼÷·ÃµÈ ¹®È¿¡¼´Â Àΰ£ÀÇ Á¸Àç¿Í ÀÚÀ¯¿¡ ´ëÇÑ ³»Àç(Ò®î¤)µÈ Á¸ÁßÀÌ ÀÖÀ¸¸ç—¿ì¸®´Â À̰ÍÀ» ÀÚ¸íÇÑ Áø¸®·Î ¾Ë°í ÀÖ½À´Ï´Ù(¸¶Ä¡ ¿ì¸®°¡ µ¶¸³¼±¾ð¹®¿¡¼ ÀÐÀ» ¼ö ÀÖµíÀÌ ¸»ÀÔ´Ï´Ù) ´Ù¸¥ ¾î¶² ¼¼°è°üµµ Àΰ£ Á¸À縦 À̿Ͱ°Àº ŵµ·Î ´ëÇϰí ÀÖÁö ¾Ê½À´Ï´Ù. ±×·¯¹Ç·Î ´Ù¸¥ ¾î¶² ¼¼°è°üµµ ±× Á¤ºÎüÁ¦·Î ÇÏ¿©±Ý ÀÚÀ¯°¡ À¶¼ºÇϵµ·Ï ÇÏÁö ¸øÇÕ´Ï´Ù. The Islamic worldview, for instance, does not hold that humans are made in the image of God (that, to them, would be akin to idolatry). And instead of freedom, the Islamic worldview sees submission to Allah as the ultimate goal. It is not surprising, therefore, that there really is no grounding in Islamic countries, not even a reasonable familiarity, with the basic concepts which would enable democracy to thrive. . ->¿¹¸¦ µé¾î¼, À̽½¶÷ÀÇ ¼¼°è°ü¿¡¼´Â Àΰ£ÀÌ Çϳª´ÔÀÇ Çü»ó´ë·Î ¸¸µé¾îÁ³´Ù´Â °Í(À̵鿡°Ô À̰ÍÀº ¿ì»ó¼þ¹è¿Í ºñ½ÁÇÑ °ÍÀÌ µË´Ï´Ù)À» ÀÎÁ¤ÇÏÁö ¾Ê½À´Ï´Ù. ±×¸®°í À̽½¶÷ÀÇ ¼¼°è°ü¿¡¼´Â, ÀÚÀ¯°¡ ¾Æ´Ñ, ¾Ë¶ó¿¡ ´ëÇÑ º¹Á¾ÀÌ ±Ã±ØÀû ¸ñÇ¥ÀÔ´Ï´Ù. ±×·¯¹Ç·Î, À̽½¶÷ ±¹°¡µé¿¡´Â ¹ÎÁÖÁ¦(ÚÅñ«ð¤)°¡ ¹ø¿µÇϱâ À§ÇÑ ±× ¾î¶² ±âÃÊ ÀÛ¾÷µµ µÇ¾î ÀÖÁö ¾ÊÀ¸¸ç, ÇÕ¸®ÀûÀΠģ¼÷ÇÔÀº ¹°·ÐÀÌ¿ä, ±âº»ÀûÀÎ °³³äÁ¶Â÷µµ ÀüÇô ¾ø´Ù´Â °ÍÀÌ ±×´ÙÁö ³î¶ó¿î ÀÏÀÌ ¾Æ´Õ´Ï´Ù. . What we are witnessing in the Middle East today, as we¡¯ve been witnessing in China, and before that in the Soviet Union, is the control of the state and governing elite over the means of communication. All tyrants recognize that free discourse among a people will undermine the tyrant¡¯s authority. This is why in every crisis authoritarian regimes close down the fax machines (in the case of the Soviet Union, as I discovered when I visited there in 1990), monitor telephones, and now of course turn on and turn off the Internet. With the flip of the switch, free dissent within a society can be silenced. Notice that the dissidents in Egypt took to the streets only after they had built up large numbers of adherents via social networking on the Web. . ->3.
