It does seem, however, that when the opinions of masses of merely average men are everywhere become or becoming the dominant power, the counterpoise and corrective to that tendency would be the more and more pronounced individuality of those who stand on the higher eminences of thought. It is in these circumstances most especially, that exceptional individuals, instead of being deterred, should be encouraged in acting differently from the mass. In other times there was no advantage in their doing so, unless they acted not only differently, but better. In this age, the mere example of non-conformity, the mere refusal to bend the knee to custom, is itself a service. Precisely because the tyranny of opinion is such as to make eccentricity a reproach, it is desirable, in order to break through that tyranny, that people should be eccentric. Eccentricity has always abounded when and where strength of character has abounded; and the amount of eccentricity in a society has generally been proportional to the amount of genius, mental vigour, and moral courage which it contained. That so few now dare to be eccentric, marks the chief danger of the time.

그러나 단지 평균인으로 구성된 대중의 의견이 어디에서나 지배적인 권력이 되거나 되고 있을 때는 그런 경향에 균형추나 교정자가 되는 것은 생각이 보다 더 높은 위치에 있는 사람들의 더욱더 명백한 개성인 것처럼 보인다. 특별한 개인이 대중과는 다르게 활동함에 있어서 沮止(저지)당하는 대신 격려를 받아야 하는 것은 특별히 바로 이런 환경에서다. 다른 때에는 그들이 다르게 행동할 뿐 아니라 더 훌륭하게 행동하지 않는다면 그들이 그렇게 행동하는 것은 아무런 이득이 되지 않는다. 이 시대에는 단순한 불순종(대중의 생각에 대한), 관습에 무릎 꿇는 것을 단순히 거부하는 것 그 자체만으로도 공헌(service)이 된다. 정확히 말해서 여론(opinion)의 폭정이 奇行(기행)을 불명예로 만들만큼 심하기 때문에 이 폭정을 돌파하기 위해서는 사람들이 기행적이 되어야 하는 것이 바람직하다. 개성(character)의 힘이 풍부할 때와 풍부한 곳에서 항상 기행이 풍부하였다; 그리고 어떤 사회의 기행의 양은 그 사회가 함유하고 있는 천재와 정신력과 도덕적 용기의 양과 비례해 왔다. 너무나 적은 수의 사람들만이 감히 畸人(기인)적이 되기를 원하고 있다는 것은 시대의 위험을 표시하고 있다.

나는 非관습적인 것들 중 어느 것이 때가 되면 관습으로 전환하는 데 적합한지가 밝혀지도록 하기 위해서 비관습적인 것들에게 가장 풍부한(free) 여지를 주는 것이 중요하다고 말했었다.

연세대학의 柳(류) 모 교수가 강의시간에 “일본군에 대한 위안부의 性(성)접대는 매춘의 일종이며 매춘은 오래된 산업이고 과거에도 있었고 미래에도 있을 것이다.... 위안부의 일은 일본민간인이 주도하고 일본정부가 방치한 것이다.” 라며 종래의 위안부 성노예설을 부인하는 견해를 발표하였다. 위안부는 일본정부에 의해 강제로 끌려가서 무임으로 혹사당한 성노예가 아니었다는 것이다. 이것은 일본군 위안부를 “극악한” 일본제국주의에 희생당한 “순교자”로 확신하고 있는 대다수의 한국인들에게는 대단히 충격적인 異說(이설)이고 異端(이단)적인 관점이 된다.

이로 인해서 柳 교수는 한국 사회로부터 엄청난 비난을 받고 있다. 그를 친일 매국노라며 파면하라는 소리가 거세지고 있다. 대부분의 신문방송은, 특히 좌파매체는 그에게 연일 집중적으로 비난의 십자포화를 퍼붓고 있다. 집권여당의 국회의원들은 학교를 직접 찾아 가서 그의 파면까지 요구하고 있다. 이것은 전형적인 사회독재의 행태이다. 다수의 의견이나 감정과 다른 것을 표현하는 개인을 폭압하고 징벌하는 것은 정치적 독재보다도 더 사악한 전체주의적 대중독재이다.
