프랑스의 위대한 지도자 샤를 드골은 말이 적은 이였지만 名言과 名文을 많이 남겼다. 그의 진정한 힘은 知性 있는 오만이었다. 드골 회고록은 명쾌한 短文으로 프랑스 문학사에 남을 현대의 古典이 되었다. 전략 사상가이기도 하였던 드골은 두 번 프랑스를 구했다. 독일군에 패망한 프랑스를 다시 일으켜 세웠고, 알제리 독립문제로 內戰 일보 직전에 갔던 프랑스를 구하였을 뿐 아니라, 지금까지 계속되는 제5공화국의 틀을 만들었다.
