The US needs allies and Japan is a major ally that will contribute to many of those relationships that provide a balancing against China. I mean Japan has got one of the best navies in the world. And so that's very helpful for the US in trying to deal with threats to Taiwan to Senkakus, to lots of different places South China Sea. So Japan is going to be an important partner not just in Northeast Asia but as a global partner.¡±

[Äɳ׵ð ¼ÒÀå]¡°South Korea always has been very rightly concerned about the challenge on their own peninsula with North Korea. So that probably gives Japan perhaps more freedom of movement to be a strong ally with America. Vis a vis China where if something happened with the Taiwan contingency whereas Korea would of course have to be more preoccupied with its own region, particularly since one could lead to more friction on the other. And so I don't know that there's an expectation that South Korea comes in in as tight of alignment with the vis a vis the China potential disturbance, whether it be in Taiwan or South China Sea or elsewhere.¡±

So it's important to bear in mind that like Korea would not simply be kind of be added on as an afterthought. Korea is a direct partner in these efforts. This is what we mean by continuing the spirit of Camp David. It's not simply a spirit. It's also an action plan and a road map to ensure that there is not just coordination but a buy in from the beginning.
