도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령 당선인이 2기 행정부 첫 유엔주재 대사에 엘리즈 스테파닉 하원의원을 지명했습니다. 스테파닉 의원은 북한 등 적국에 반대하는 강경한 입장을 밝혀왔습니다. 조은정 기자가 보도합니다.

도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령 당선인은 11일 성명을 내고 2기 행정부 첫 유엔주재 대사에 엘리즈 스테파닉 하원의원을 지명했다고 밝혔습니다. 트럼프 당선인은 “엘리즈 스테파닉을 내 내각의 유엔 주재 미국 대사로 지명하게 돼 영광”이라며 “엘리즈는 매우 강력하고 강인하며 현명한 ‘미국 우선주의'의 투사”라고 밝혔습니다.

[트럼프 당선인]“I am honored to nominate Chairwoman Elise Stefanik to serve in my Cabinet as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Elise is an incredibly strong, tough, and smart America First fighter.”

2014년 최연소 여성 하원의원으로 선출돼 정계에 입문한 스테파닉 의원은 하원 군사위원회와 정보위원회 등에서 활동하고 있으며 북한 등 적국에 대한 강경한 입장을 밝혀왔습니다. 스테파닉 의원은 홈페이지에서 스스로 “러시아, 북한, 이란, 특히 중국에 대해 가장 목소리를 높여온 의원 중 하나”라고 말했습니다.

[스테파닉 의원]“America’s adversaries are constantly trying to undermine our institutions and threaten our security. Congresswoman Stefanik has been one of the most vocal members of Congress against Russia, North Korea, Iran, and especially, China.”

“미국의 적들은 끊임없이 미국의 제도를 약화시키고 안보를 위협하려고 시도하고 있다”며 이같이 밝혔습니다.

스테파닉 의원은 북한과 이란이 탄도 미사일을 계속 개발하고 있는 점을 들어 미 동부에 제3의 미사일 방어기지를 구축할 필요가 있다고 꾸준히 밝혀왔습니다. 또 기시다 후미오 전 일본 총리가 지난 4월 미 의회 상하원 합동연설을 했을 때 성명을 내고 “기시다 후미오 총리를 의사당에 환영한 것을 자랑스럽게 생각한다”고 밝혔습니다.

[스테파닉 의원]“I’m proud to welcome Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to our nation’s Capitol as we continue our joint efforts to combat the malign encroachment of Communist China and North Korea in the Indo-Pacific region.”

이어 “우리는 인도태평양 지역에서 공산주의 중국과 북한의 악의적인 침략에 맞서기 위한 공동의 노력을 계속하고 있다”고 밝혔습니다.

<“북한 문제, 국제사회 관심 환기할 것”>

케네스 와인스타인 허드슨연구소 일본 석좌는 11일 VOA에 스테파닉 의원은 “훌륭하고 강인한 정신을 가진 유엔 대사가 될 것”이라고 말했습니다.

[와인스타인 석좌]“Rep. Stefanik will be a superb and tough-minded UN Ambassador. She will take names and numbers not just of our adversaries but of our allies and partners who rely on the US for deterrence and development assistance but separate from us when it comes to tough votes in the UN. After the weakness of the Biden years in which the DPRK openly allied with Russia, it’s going to be much tougher to control the DPRK through a Security Council resolution as Russia will simply veto it. But Stefanik can use her bully pulpit to bring the world’s attention to the DPRK, its nuclear program, its blatant disregard of human rights, and the Un regime’s cynical use of its own citizens for cannon fodder in Ukraine.”

특히 “우리의 적들뿐 아니라, 억지력과 개발 지원을 위해서는 미국에 의존하면서도 유엔에서 어려운 투표에 있어서는 미국과 분리된 동맹과 파트너의 명단을 작성하고 숫자를 셀 것”이라고 말했습니다. 이어 러시아의 거부권 때문에 안보리를 통해 북한을 통제하는 것은 훨씬 더 어려워질 것이라고 말했습니다.

와인스타인 석좌는 “그러나 스테파닉 의원은 강력한 발언을 통해 북한과 핵 프로그램, 노골적인 인권 무시, 우크라이나에서 자국민을 총알받이로 사용하는 김정은 정권에 대한 국제사회의 관심을 환기시킬 것”이라고 말했습니다.
