[연설의 배경] 1944년 6월6일 영국 해안을 떠난 사상 최대 규모의 대함대가 나치 독일이 점령하고 있던 프랑스의 노르망디 해안에 상륙했다. 연합군 최고 사령관 아이젠하워 장군은 이날 아침에 발표한 메시지를 통해서 상륙부대 장병들에게 작전명 오버로드(OVERLORD)의 이 상륙작전이 완벽한 승리를 가져올 것이라면서 그들을 위대한 십자군이라 불렀다. 아이젠하워 장군은 연 설에서 십자군이란 말을 자주 썼고 자신의 회고록 제목도 ‘평화의 십자군’이라 붙였다. 이 연설의 마지막에서도 그는 전지전능한 하나님의 加護를 간청하고 있다. 기독교 문명의 서구 사회에선 적을 이단이나 惡으로, 아군을 善이나 정통으로 규정함으로써 도덕적인 정당성을 확보하여 士氣를 북돋우려고 하는 것이 보통이다.

연합 원정군의 육·해·공군 장병 여러분: 여러분들은 바야흐로 위대한 십자군 원정에 나서려 하고 있다. 여러 달 동안 우리는 이 과업을 준비하기 위해 땀흘렸다. 지금 세계의 시선은 여러분들에게 쏠려 있다. 자유를 사랑하는 사람들은 어디에 있든지 그들의 희망과 기도는 여러분들과 함께 進軍할 것이다.
다른 戰線의 戰友 및 동맹군과 함께 여러분들은 독일 전쟁기구를 파괴해야 하며 유럽인들을 억압하고 있는 나치 전제주의자들을 제거해야 하고 자유세계의 모든 사람들의 안전을 확보해야 한다.
여러분들의 임무는 결코 쉽지 않다. 여러분들의 敵은 잘 훈련되어 있고 잘 무장되었으며 전투경험으로 단련되어 있다. 敵은 처절하게 대항할 것이다.
그러나 지금은 1944년이다. 1940~1941년의 나치 勝戰 이후 많은 일들이 일어났다. 연합국들은 수많은 會戰과 백병전에서 독일을 대패시켰다. 우리의 항공전술에 의해 그들의 航空戰力과 地上 전쟁 수행 능력은 크게 약화되었다. 우리의 조국 後方전선은 우리에게 압도적으로 우세한 무기와 탄약을 제공하고 있으며 훈련된 大예비전투병력을 준비해두고 있다. 大勢는 바뀌었다! 세계의 자유민들도 승리를 향해서 함께 進軍하고 있다!
나는 여러분들의 용기, 임무에 대한 헌신성, 그리고 전투 역량에 무한한 자신감을 갖고 있다. 우리는 완전한 승리 이외에는 아무것도 인정하지 않는다.
행운을 빈다! 그리고 이 위대하고 고귀한 임무를 수행함에 있어서 全知全能한 하나님의 축복이 우리와 함께 하시기를 간구하는 바이다.

“The free men of the world are marching together to victory!”

Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Forces: You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other Fronts you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.
Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle-hardened. He will fight savagely.
But this is the year 1944! Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of 1940~41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats, in open battle, man-to-man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our Home Fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men. The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to victory!
I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full victory!
