2024-4-4 현재, 대만 동부 ‘화렌’에서 발생한 '원폭 32개 위력'(7.2강진)의 지진에 사상자가 1천여 명에 이른다고 한다. 무너진 건물에 깔린 사람들을 계속 구조 중이다. 화렌현 당국은 유명 관광지인 ‘타이루거’ 국립공원(동양의 그랜드캐년)에서도 산사태가 일어나 낙석에 맞아 4명이 사망하고 공원 내의 숙박소에서도 피해자가 는다는 안타까운 소식이다. 더 이상 피해자가 늘지 않기를 간절히 바라며 조속한 수습과 회복을 기대합니다. 고인의 명복을 빌며 유가족에게 위로의 말씀 드립니다.

나는 이번 화렌에서 발생한 지진으로 특히 태루각에서 낙석으로 4명이 사망했다는 소식에 정신이 번쩍 들었다. 내가 겪었던 곳과 같은 장소였기 때문이다. 끔찍한 순간의 기억이 되살아났다. 1990년 겨울, 당시 나는 틈나는 대로 소니 휴대용 비디오카메라를 들고 일본, 괌, 사이판, 대만, 태국 등 가까운 곳을 배낭 여행했다.

죽음을 담보한 동양의 그랜드캐년 모험담, 이는 내가 세계배낭 여행 중 “가장 위험하고 아찔했던 순간들" 중 하나이다. “주님, 살려 주소서!!!"

겨울 방학 때 대만으로 떠났다. 타이페이 유스호스텔에 배낭을 풀었다. 대만에서 제일 먼저 가보고 싶었던 곳은 단연 동양의 ‘그랜드캐년’이라는 타이루거! 얼마나 근사한가. 이제 내일이면 나도 화련의 태루각에 간다. 긴장과 흥분으로 호스텔 라운지 벽에 걸린 대형 대만 지도를 보고 있었다. 독일인 배낭족 친구가 나에게 귀띔을 한다. 진짜 태루각의 신비를 보려면 일반 코스인 화련으로 가지 말고 반대 방향으로 도전해 보라고. 이 친구의 체험담을 들으니 정말 내가 원하는 바로 그런 스타일이었다. 까짓것 죽기 아니면 가무라 치기다. 따라서 코스는 정반대 방향인 타이중에서 출발했다.

타이베이역에서 기차로 출발. 5시간 만에 타이중역에 도착. 하룻밤을 자고 아침 일찍 시금털털한 시외버스에 몸을 실었다. 위험한 고산(高山) 도로를 장시간 달리기엔 어울리지 않았다. 너무 고물 버스였다. 뭔가 심상치 않은 예감. 하여튼 가보자. 산악도로를 따라 올라 갈수록 간이 콩알만해졌다. 가드레일도 없는 도로. 차창 밖을 내려다보면 계곡 밑바닥이 까마득하다. 굴렀다 하면 완전 콩가루다. 해발 2000m. 어휴, 이거 정말 장난이 아니군. 물론 나만 비상사태지 현지인들이야 신경 뚝! 어느 지점에선 하늘 위를 나는 듯한 거대한 운해가 펼쳐지는가 하면(설악산의 그것과는 다름) 잠시 후엔 한 치 앞이 안 보이는 운해 속을 기어들어 가기도. 이렇게 가슴 조이며 8시간을 달려 천상에 도착. 첩첩산중의 호스텔에 짐을 풀고 두 다리 쭉 뻗고 잤다.

바로 다음 날, 다시 ‘동서횡단 공로’와 ‘천상’ 사이의 20km를 고물 버스로 달렸다. 드디어 신(神)의 작품이라 일컫는 동양의 그랜드캐년, 타이루거 대협곡이 나타났다. 이제 버스는 ‘바이바이’다. 즉각, 내렸다. 과연 듣던 그대로였다. 자연의 신비란 바로 이런 것. 볼수록 신기하고 아름다운 대자연의 풍광. 눈과 입도 놀란 듯 다물지 못한다. 계속 걸었다.

고생대(古生代)의 대리석 단애(斷崖)가 그 높이만도 수백 미터에 이른다. 특히 대리석 90도 절벽 산을 ‘ㄷ’자 형식으로 도로를 파 놓은 것을 보면 입이 쩍 벌어진다. 인간의 한계를 의심케 한다. 물론, 신비로움이 있는 만큼 위험 또한 있는 법. 그 터널 가운데 서 있으면 마치 금방이라도 '꿍' 내려앉을 것만 같다. 두려움과 긴장감이 그 중압감을 더해준다. 간간이 지나가는 차량의 사람들이 손을 흔들어 줄 뿐 완전히 고립된 협곡이다.

협곡을 약 5km쯤 걸었을까, 이상하게 차량이 뚝 끊겨 버렸다. 뭔가 불길한 예감이 엄습했다. 적막함이 주위를 감싼다. 그때 마침 한 대의 지프가 빵빵대며 달려와 내 뒤에 멈춘다. 운전자가 다급한 소리로 되돌아가란다. 산사태로 도로가 막혔다는 것. 크고 작은 돌들이 계속 떨어지고 있으니 가까이 가지 말란다. 그러나 나는 그의 말을 듣지 않고 계속 앞으로 나갔다. 그가 따라와 내 앞에 서서 막았다. 나는 그에게 비디오카메라를 보여주며 뉴스 취재원이라고 했다. 그는 엉거주춤하더니만 더는 제지하지 않았다. 나는 계속 걸었다.

정말 긴장된다. 금방 어디에서 돌덩이가 굴러떨어질 것만 같다. 하늘만 빼꼼이 들여다보이는 협곡이기 때문이다. 두 번째 산모퉁이를 돌아서는 순간 바로 그 현장이 나타났다. 약 30m 거리에서 봐도 길을 막고 있는 바윗덩이의 크기는 집채만 했다. 사방이 협곡인지라 지금 어느 쪽에서든 돌덩이가 굴러떨어질 분위기다.

마치 무엇에 홀린 듯 그곳을 향해 한 발 한 발 발걸음을 옮겼다. 그 지점에 다다르니 아직 먼지가 주위를 에워싼 상태였다. 조그만 돌덩이들이 간헐적으로 여기저기서 '툭툭' 떨어졌다. 어쩌다 잔돌 부스러기 파편이라도 맞으면 끝장이다. 그러나 되돌아가고 싶은 생각은 전혀 없었다.

조심스레 접근했다. 마치 대형 건물이 폭삭 내려앉아 그 건물 잔해들이 뒤엉켜 있는 형태다. 집채만한 바위들이 겹쳐 쌓여 있었다. 틈새들이 보였다. 그 공간 속으로 기어들어 갔다. 그 순간부터 나는 거의 제정신이 아니었다. 무섭고 두려웠다. 여전히 '툭툭' 돌 떨어지는 소리가 들렸다. 지옥문을 노크하는 소리와도 같았다. 둔탁한 장송곡이었다. 겨우 몸만 빠져나갈 빈틈에 갇혔다. 잘못 움직였다간 옆에 고인 돌이 무너질 판이다. 그러나 절대 포기하지 않았다. 나의 무모한 모험심이 후퇴를 용납지 않았다. 그러나 인간은 한없이 나약한 존재. 위기에 몰리면 무의식적으로 절대자를 찾는 법. 기도문이 저절로 나왔다.

Our father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven~~. Give us our daily bread~~. Forgive me and save me~~. My Dear Load~~. God~~.… I respectfully ask the Lord once more. Please have pity on me, forgive my reckless challenge, and protect me from this danger. Indeed.

드디어 빠져나왔다. 비몽사몽(非夢似夢)간에 몽유병 환자의 모습으로 기어 나왔다. 아, 드디어 살았구나. 어찌 이런 일이~~. 저 멀리 약 50m 전방의 한 무리의 사람들로부터 손을 흔들며 환영의 고함을 외치는 소리가 들렸다. Oh, my God! 죽음을 담보한 도전, 평생 잊지 못할 버켓 리스트의 한 장면. 무모한 모험의 대가인 만큼 뼛속 깊이 그 흔적이 남아 있습니다.

만약 2024년이 나에게 무언가를 명한다면 아마도 그것은 지금 현재 내가 누리고 있는 자유와 시간 그리고 사람과 사물을 당연한 것으로 생각하지 말라는 것이리라.

People met on my backpacking 198 - Thinking about Taiwan's Great Earthquake and Landslide

April 4, 2024. As of today, more than 1,000 people have been killed or injured by the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that rocked Hualien in eastern Taiwan. Rescuers are still rescuing people from the collapsed structures. According to Hualien County authorities, 4 people were killed when a landslide crushed Tyluger National Park, a popular tourist site. I wish there are no more victims here. My heartfelt sympathies and condolences to the departed families.

I was surprised to read that four people were killed by a rockfall during the Huaren earthquake, notably near Tarugak. Because that was the same spot I had been. Memories of my dreadful time came to mind. In the winter of 1990, I backpacked to neighboring nations such as Japan, Guam, Saipan, Taiwan, and Thailand using my Sony portable video camera.

This narrative is about a Grand Canyon journey in the East, where I promise my death. This was one of the "most dangerous and dizzying moments" of my world-wide backpacking adventure. "Lord, save me!!“

I left for Taiwan over my winter vacation. I unloaded my backpack in the Taipei Youth Hostel. Finally, I was heading to Tarugak in Hualien tomorrow. With suspense and excitement, I looked at a giant map of Taiwan on the hostel lounge wall. My German backpacking acquaintance tipped me off. He urged me to try going in the other way instead of going to Hualien, which was the usual route, to see the mystery of Tarugak. His experience was just the style I was looking for.

I left Taipei Station by train. It took only five hours to arrive to Taichung Station. I rested overnight and boarded a junk bus early in the morning to travel up the dangerous alpine road. The bus drove up the hilly road, scaring me. The road did not even have a railing. It was 2,000 metres above sea level. Of course, I was the only person in an emergency. The villagers remained calm! I ran for eight hours with a tight chest and finally arrived at my destination. I fell asleep while unpacking my belongings in a hostel in the highlands.

The next day, I ran another 20 kilometers on the old bus. Finally, the Grand Canyon of the East, also known as the "Work of Gods," and the Grand Tyluker Gorge arose. Now I've broken up with the bus. It was just what I'd been hearing. This was the mystery of nature. The more I stared at it, the more fantastic and lovely it appeared. I couldn't close my eyes or speak as if I were astonished. I continued walking.

Marble cliffs built in prehistoric times can reach hundreds of meters in height. My mouth expanded wide as I witness a 'ㄷ'-shaped road dug on a marble 90-degree cliff mountain. This made me question human limits. Of course, with mystery comes peril. Standing in the center of the tunnel made me feel like I'm going to 'fall down' at any time. Fear and stress increased the pressure.

Maybe I walked approximately 5 kilometers through the canyon, but the automobile suddenly stopped. Something gloomy emerged. Silence surrounds me. Then, just in time, a jeep appeared with a boom and stopped behind me. The driver obstructed the route as a result of the mountain's collapse. He claimed that huge and little stones continued dropping. But I continued ahead without listening to him. He followed me, and stopped me. I showed him the video camera and informed him that I was a news reporter. I continued walking.

I was so nervous. I had the impression that a rock would fall from someplace at any moment. When I turned around the second mountain corner, the sight emerged. Even from 30 meters away, the boulder obstructing the road was the size of a house. There was a canyon everywhere, so it seemed like a rock fell from either side.

I took one step at a time, like if I were controlled by somthing. As I approached, the road was still covered with dust. Small stones dropped intermittently. If I was hit by a piece of rubble, I would die. But I never wanted to return.

There were stacks of rocks the size of a home. I saw holes. I crawled into the gap. I almost lost my sanity after that. I was terrified. I could still hear pebbles falling. It was like pounding on the hellgate. I was imprisoned in a space through which only my body could escape. If I moved wrong, the stone that had stuck next to me would crumble. But I never give up. However, humans are indefinitely weak. When people are in trouble, they unconsciously seek God. My prayer came out by itself.

I eventually made it out. I slid out as a sleepwalker. I said, "Oh, you're finally alive." A group of people raising their hands and yelling greetings could be heard in the distance, around 50 meters ahead. Oh my god! This is a moment from my bucket list that I will never forget, a struggle that will result in death. As is the price of a wild journey, its traces are still buried in my bones.

If 2024 instructs me to do something, it may be to remind me not to take the freedom, time, people, and things I have now for granted.
