서울 아덱스 2023 행사 참관기

(Seoul International Aerospace &; Defence Exhibition October 17~22, 2023 Seoul Airport)

어제 23년 10월 22일, 서울공항에서 펼쳐진 서울 아덱스 2023을 보고 왔다. 힘든 만큼 보람 있었다. 실은 친구 네 명과 오전 11시에 서울공항 입구에서 만나기로 했지만 결국 예상치 못한 대혼잡으로 친구들은 2시간 정도의 대기(待機)에 지쳐 돌아가고 나만 끝까지 버틴 결과 보고 왔다.

집에서 아침 일찍 출발했지만 지하철로 1시간 반 소요, 모란역에서 서울 공항 입구까지 가는데 약 50분 소요, 공항 입구에서 티켓 체크인과 엑스레인 검색대 통과를 마치기까지 장장 40~50분 소요, 정작 서울공항 내에 들어서니 오후 1시가 넘었다. 기운이 빠질 정도였다. 이 정도 많은 인파가 몰릴 줄 상상 못 했다. 마치 엄청난 수의 난민들이 국경을 넘으려고 긴 줄을 서서 기다리는 광경이랄까. 정확한 건 모르겠지만 십만 명은 되지 않을까 싶었다. 80~90%는 젊은 층, 연인들과 어린이 동반한 가족들. 아기들은 계속 울어대는 등 한마디로 아수라장이 따로 없었다.

관람 시간은 오후 5시까지. 볼 것이 너무 많았다. 점심도 거르고 바삐 돌아봐도 각종 비행기와 탱크 미사일 등 첨단 군사 장비들과 대형 실내 전시장(부스)의 수많은 첨단 드론, 로봇 등을 볼 수 없었다.

그 와중에도 나는 미국 공군들과 대화를 나누는데 그만 그 짧은 시간을 거의 30분 이상을 소비했다. 이들은 특히 말로만 듣고 TV에서만 봤던 세계에서 최고의 성능과 수송 능력을 가졌다는 B-1B를 포함, 공중 급유기 KC-330, 역시 세계 최강의 미 전투기 랩터 F-22, 수직 이착륙(離着陸) 대형 헬기 등을 세워 둔 비행기 앞에 한두 명 혹은 대여섯 명이 서서 자기들끼리 얘기를 나누거나 구경 온 한국인들을 구경도 하고 어린이들이 사진찍기를 부탁하면 즐겁게 모델이 되어주는 역을 했다.

내가 그들에게 물었던 것은 그 비행기의 수송 규모와 능력 등이었다. 가령, 저 초대형 수송 비행기에는 탱크를 몇 대 실을 수 있느냐? 저 스텔스기가 바로 북한을 몰래 들랑날랑했다는 거냐? 저 미사일이 바로 김정은이가 무서워하는 지하 6미터를 뚫는 벙커버스터냐? 大韓民國 비행기 블랙이글스를 어떻게 생각하느냐? 등등.

나의 이런 질문에 그들은 정말 지나치다(?)할 만큼 자세히, 정성껏 그리고 신나게 설명했다. 물론 군사용어를 제대로 알 턱이 없었지만 대충 이해하면서 맞장구를 쳤던 것. 재미있었던 얘기 중 하나는 세계에서 최대의 수송기에 탱크를 겨우 2대 밖에 못 싣느냐고 했더니 그는 탱크의 크기에 따라 4대를 실지만 2대가 맞다고 했다. 그래서 난 영화에서 보면 탱크 자주포 트럭 등 다수의 대형 군사 장비를 싣던데 실망했다고 했더니 그는 웃으며 영화는 다 가짜라며 영화를 믿으면 안 된다고 해서 웃고 말았다.

실상 얘기가 더 길어진 것은 특히 한 병사가 자기 스마트폰을 꺼내 자기가 서울과 부산에서 찍은 엄청난 수의 사진을 보여주면서 설명을 부탁했기 때문이다. 가령, 청와대에서 찍은 사진들 중에 청와대 본관과 상춘재 그리고 청와대 뜰과 수문장 교대식에 대해서였다. 남산 타워에서 찍은 사진과, 한강 그리고 부산 자갈치 시장을 보여주며 설명을 요구했다. 자신은 한국 문화에 관심이 많다며 한국 계절, 음식, 예절 그리고 여행지 등.

여기서 내가 만나 얘길 나눈 미군들은 군복만 입었지 전혀 군인 같은 느낌이 없을 정도로 자유분방했다. 이들의 말을 듣다 보니 이들은 한국을 처음 온 것 같았다. 역시 그랬다. 이들은 2주 전에 미 본토에서 한국에 왔단다. 6일간의 서울 에어쇼가 끝나면 바로 본국으로 돌아간단다. 어쩐지 싶었다. 그래서 한국에 관한 질문이 많았던 것이다. 부산 자갈치시장에서 뭘 먹었느냐고 했더니 고개를 저으며 구경만 했단다. 갈치 장어 오징어 멍게 해삼 등 비늘이 없는 것을 많이 취급하는 걸 보고 놀란단다. 부산이 내 고향이라고 했더니 이 군인은 더더욱 적극적으로 부산에 다시 가고 싶다며 좋은 곳을 추천해달라고 했다. 해운대와 용두산공원 그리고 부산 영도다리와 광복동 거리를 추천했다.

에어쇼는 오전과 오후에 두 번 있었다. 오전 것은 공항 밖에서 대기 중에 본 것이라 충분하지 않았다. 그러나 오후에 大韓民國의 블랙이글스가 보여준 오색 연기의 곡예비행과 하트와 큐피드의 화살 그리고 태극기는 환상 그 자체였다. 동영상을 계속 찍고 또 찍었다.

참으로 아쉬운 것은 내가 정성껏 찍은 사진과 촬영한 동영상(에어쇼)을 한 번의 실수로 다 날리고 만 것이다. 4시 30분부터 곧 전시회를 종료한다는 안내가 대형 마이크로 통해 반복 들렸다. 급한 마음에 못다 찍은 사진을 다 찍으려고 부족한 공간 확장을 위해 내장 메모리에서 SD카드로 교체하는 과정에서 잘못 누른 것이 그만 갤러리의 사진 폴더가 휴지통으로 들어갔고 그걸 나는 바로 삭제한 것이다. 정말 허탈했다. 막판에 탱크 등 지상 장비를 몇 장 찍은 것만 남았다.

나와 함께 사진을 찍은 미군들(4곳의 7명)에게 이 기념사진을 내 패북에 올릴 테니 보라고 했는데 미안하게도 그게 공염불이 되고 말았다.

*블랙이글스 9대가 마지막 환상적인 곡예비행을 마친 뒤 착륙한 비행기에서 파이럿 9명이 동시에 캐노피(머리 위 덮개)를 열 때 자랑스러운 태극기가 위로 솟아올라 힘차게 나부꼈다. 정말 보기 좋았다. 모든 파이럿은 펜스 앞의 관중들에게 다가와 감사의 인사를 건넸다. 우레와 같은 박수가 있었다. 정말 멋진 대한민국의 파이럿이었다. 물론 이 멋진 장면을 놓칠 리 없지만 결국 실수로 그만.....다신 볼 수 없는 귀한 사진들을...

Yesterday, October 22, 2023, in Seoul Airport, I observed Seoul ADEX 2023. In reality, I was meant to meet up with my four friends at the airport's entrance at 11 a.m., but owing to unanticipated turmoil, my buddies became impatient after waiting for almost two hours.

It took me four hours to go from my home to the Seoul Airport when I departed early in the morning. From the airport entrance, it takes 50 minutes to check in tickets and go through the X-ray inspection station. I'm already worn out. This big crowd surprised me. It looked a sizable group of refugees lining up to enter the border. Young adults, couples, and families with kids made up 80–90% of the visitors. In a word, the babies were in a state of continual pandemonium and wailing.

It was available to watch till 5:00 p.m. There was a great deal to see. Even if I missed lunch and hurriedly glanced about, I would not be able to observe the advanced military hardware, including planes and tank rockets, as well as the various high-tech drones and robots that were shown in enormous indoor exposition rooms (booths).

In the meanwhile, I spoke with the American Air Force for about thirty minutes. They were positioned in front of a B-1B, a KC-330 aerial refueling jet, the Raptor F-22, the most potent fighter in the world, as well as a large vertical takeoff and landing helicopter. When youngsters approached them to pose for photographs, they joyfully acted as models while conversing among themselves and observing the Korean visitors that came to see them.

I enquired about the plane's size and capabilities. How many tanks, for instance, can such supercarry jet transport? Is that stealth jet entering and leaving North Korea smeakingly? Kim Jong Un is afraid of that missile, a bunker buster that can go through six meters of ground. What do you think of the Black Eagles, the Korean airplane, and other things?

They patiently, thoughtfully, and enthusiastically answered all of my inquiries. Of course, I was not really familiar with military terms. I found it fascinating that the biggest cargo aircraft in the world could only carry two tanks. I informed him that in the movie, it took many tanks and self-propelled artillery vehicles with the heavy military equipment. "All the movies are fake," he said, adding, "You shouldn't believe the movies.“

A soldier shared photos of Seoul and Busan, including the Blue House, Namsan Tower, Han River, and Jagalchi Market. He was curious about the main building, Sangchunjae, the courtyard, and the gatekeeper's change. He also shared photos of Korean culture, including seasons, food, manners, and travel destinations. The soldier asked for an explanation.

American soldiers arrived in Korea two weeks ago, planning to return home after a six-day Seoul Air Show. They were outgoing and surprised to see scale-free fish being consumed in Busan. I told him I was born in Busan. The soldier expressed a desire to visit more frequently and asked for suggestions for nice locations. I suggested Haeundae, Yongdusan Park, Yeongdo Bridge, and Gwangbok-dong Street as nice places to visit.

Two air shows were held in the morning and afternoon, with the later one being more impressive as it was seen inside the airport. The afternoon showcased colorful smoke aerobatics, heart-shaped arrows, Cupid, and Taegeukgi by Korean-made Black Eagles, which was a fantasy.

I accidentally deleted all images and films of air shows. As I mistakenly switched out my internal memory with an SD card, causing the gallery's photo folder to be erased and thrown in the garbage. Only a few images of ground vehicles, including tanks, remain available.

I told the US soldiers I was shooting with that I would share the photographs we captured on FB. Unfortunately, this pledge was broken owing to my foolishness.

*When the nine pilots raised the canopy of the plane that landed after nine Black Eagles finished aerobatic flying, the proud Taegeukgi fluttered energetically. It was wonderful to watch. All of the pilots approached and thanked the audience in front of the fence. There was a roar of approval. They were fantastic Korean pilots. I also took this moment, but you know as I mantioned above....
