People met on my backpacking 164 - Great President Park Chung-hee
My wife and I spent a month in three Central Asian nations (Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Tajikistan) this time (May 2023). For us, the most fascinating and fulfilling aspect of this vacation was conversing with strangers. One of them was an African guy from Malawi.
When multiple individuals stay in the same hotel, it is normal for them to strike up a discussion at a restaurant or the lobby. It doesn't matter in my situation if it isn't necessarily that type of area. For example, even in the corridor or the elevator, I greet the other person first. The talk will then frequently flow freely.
In the hotel where we stayed in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, there were a disproportionate number of black individuals. When I asked a black man, he stated they came as boxers to compete in the Tashkent International Boxing Championships. There were at least five or six persons present, including managers. Why couldn't I see Korean athletes and Westerners if it was an international boxing tournament? His response was that they all stayed in five-star hotels. It was awkward to hear, but it was genuine and sincere.
Actually, Venezuela, Ecuador, Guyana, and Nicaragua were the only South American countries represented among the fighters and managers I met. Thus, the position of national power is exposed exactly as it is on the global arena. This indicates that Korea is already a wealthy nation. The world is therefore more experienced the more awakened a person is, and the more rationally the power of the global society is understood. I genuinely believe that my nation will grow to be a powerful one because of this.
This man from Malawi was the one I met in the hallway. I pulled up a picture of us from our 1999 trip to Malawi on my phone and showed it to him as soon as I heard him mention Malawi. His tone of voice and facial expression immediately transformed to that of a closest buddy, as if he had just run into an old friend. A picture acted as a mild lubricant. The narrative immediately fell apart. He said that English was the official language when I asked him whether he spoke it fluently.
The first question this person had for me was regarding the Saemaul Movement in Korea. I inquired further out of curiosity, "How do you know about the Saemaul Movement in Korea? He claimed that because to the Saemaul Movement in Korea, not only do rural communities but the entire nation now view Korea as a generous neighbor. Rice cultivation experienced a miracle many years ago as a result of Korea's cutting-edge agricultural technologies. The majority of Zambians originate from developing nations, but now that the country can provide for itself, they are filled with optimism.
I enquired as to whether he was familiar with the Saemaul song. He said, "Of course," and sang with an almost perfect pronunciation of Korean. "The bell rung at morning. The fresh dawn is radiant. Come on, let's build a new community. Old thatched homes should be removed, and the village road should be widened. Let's beautify a lush garden. Work diligently to support one another. Let's create a livable hamlet of our own. I was taken aback by his music. He got a huge hand from me. I suddenly saw a very distinct vision of President Park Chung-hee.
Since the early 1970s, I have listened to Saemaul tunes every day. It was powerful and upbeat when the daybreak bell rung. In Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and Central Asia, I heard this song again. It was quite interesting. I couldn't believe him from Malawi in southern Africa sang it to me. Amazing! President Park Chung-hee, a famous leader, was still alive. He was the world's leader and hero. The Korean government and the ungrateful Korean people have yet to erect a monument honoring him. As soon as possible, his statue should coexist proudly in Gwanghwamun Square with that of the founding president, Syngman Rhee. It's not only for Koreans but for everybody who is familiar with Saemaul music, everywhere in the globe.
This friend suddenly looked at the time and hurried down to the hall. As he left, he said, "I hope many Koreans come to Malawi, our country, where they have succeeded." He raised his right hand to me to say goodbye.
Whenever I hear from foreigners that they envy the successful Republic of Korea and welcome Koreans, I feel ecstatic as if I were dreaming. Whenever I travel around the world, I directly feel the status of Korea, which has changed 360 degrees from 1980 to 1990. The best way to realize this is to talk to people around the world. To feel and discover the truth, it is time to exchange stories, making eye contact with each other. I'm sure. Even at this moment, Korea's dawn bell continues to ring around the world in Africa and South America. Long live President Park Chung Hee!! Forever blessing to Korea!!!
Thanks.
