By now everything is known down to the most minute detail about this horrible event. To begin with Liputun met Erkel and Shatov at the grotto; Shatov didn¡¯t greet him and didn¡¯t extend his hand, but immediately said hurriedly and in a loud voice.
"Well, where¡¯s your shovel? Don¡¯t you have another lantern? Don¡¯t be afraid; there¡¯s no one here. Even if you fired a cannon, they wouldn¡¯t hear it Skvoreshniki. It¡¯s over here, right here, in this spot¡¦"
He stamped his foot ten paces from the far corner of the grotto nearer the forest. At that very moment Tolkachenko came rushing out of the woods and threw himself on him, while Erkel grabbed him from behind by the elbows. Liputin attacked from the front. The three of them knocked him off his feet and pinned him to the ground. Then Peter Stepaovich came running out with his revolver. The story goes that Shatov had time to turn towards him and was able to make out his features and recognize him. Three lanterns lit the scene. Shatov gave a sudden short, desperate cry; but they didn¡¯t let him go on. Peter Stepanovich placed the revolver firmly and accurately against his forehead, pressed hard¡ªthen pulled the trigger.
The shot wasn¡¯t very loud; at least nothing was heard at Skvoreshniki. Shigalyov heard it, of course; he¡¯d scarcely managed to get more than three hundred paces away. He heard both the cry and the shot, but according to his own subsequent testimony, he didn¡¯t turn around and didn¡¯t even stop. Death occurred almost instantaneously. Peter Stepanovich was the only one who managed to keep his head, though I don¡¯t think he remained altogether cool. He squatted down and with a quick determined hand searched the victim¡¯s pockets. There was no money to be found (he¡¯d left his wallet under Marya Ignatievna¡¯s pillow). They found two or three bits of paper, of no importance: one note from the office, the title of some book, and one old bill from a restaurant abroad which he¡¯d kept in his pocket, goodness knows why, for over two years. Peter Stepanovich transferred the papers to his own pocket; suddenly noticing that all the others were standing around looking at the body and not doing anything, he started hurling coarse abuse at them and urging them to work.
