He was a very handsome young man, about twenty-five years old, and, I must confess, I was most impressed. I¡¯d been expecting to meet some filthy ruffian, wasted by debauchery and reeking of vodka. On the contrary, he was the most elegant gentleman I¡¯d ever met, extremely well dressed, and behaving as only those long accustomed to the most refined nobility behave. Nor was I the only one to be so surprised: the whole town was amazed, especially since, of course, everyone knew Mr Stavrogin¡¯s entire biography, in such detail furthermore, that it was inconceivable how this knowledge had been acquired.

Most astonishing af all, half of it turned out to be true. Our ladies were all mad about the new arrival. They were sharply divided into two groups¡ªin one they adored him, in the other they were out for his blood; but both groups were mad about him. Some people were particularly fascinated by the idea that his soul might harbour a fatal secret; others positively relished the notion that he was a murderer. It also turned out that he was extremely well educated, even considerably knowledgeable. Of course, it didn¡¯t take much knowledge to impress us; but he could form opinions about current and extremely interesting topics, and, what was even more valuable, he had a great deal of good sense.

I must mention this as something of a peculiarity: all of us, from the very first day, found him to be an extremely sensible man. He wasn¡¯t very talkative; he was elegant without affectation, surprisingly modest, but at the same time bold and self-assured as no one else among us was. Our dandies regarded him with envy and were eclipsed by him. His face also impressed me: his hair was just a bit too black, his bright eyes a bit too clear and serene, his complexion a bit too fair and delicate, his colour a bit too fresh and pure, his teeth like pearls, his lips like coral¡ªhe seemed to be a paragon of beauty, yet at the same time there was something repulsive about him. His face was said to resemble a mask; there was also, by the way, talk of his extraordinary physical strength. He was quite tall.

Varvara Petrovna regarded him with pride, but with constant worry. He spent about six months among us, as was languid, quiet, rather gloomy; he appeared in society and observed all the rules of our provincial etiquette with meticulous attention. He was related to the governor on his father¡¯s side and was received in his house as a close relative. But after a few months the wild beast suddenly unsheathed its claws.
