People met on my backpacking (254) - First impressions of ancient Palmyra

.

Among the world's queens, there are many outstanding queens (empresses) who have left their mark on world history.

*Hatshepsut (Egypt 1479-1458 BCE), Cleopatra VII (Egypt 51-30 BCE), Queen Zenobia (Palmyra Empire 260-67), Queen Sonduk (Silla-ROK 606-647), Queen Jindok (Silla-ROK 647-647), Empress Chukchon Mu Hu (China 690-705), *Queen Matilda, (UK 1102-1167), *Shahzar al-Durr (Egypt 1250-1250), *Queen Elizabeth I (UK 1558-1603), *Maria Theresa (Austria: 1740-1780), *Ekaterina II (Russia 1762-1796), *Queen Isabel I (Spain 1474-1504), *Queen Christina (Sweden 1632-1654), *Queen Victoria (UK 1837-1901), *Elizabeth II (UK 1952-2022), and others.

But the queen I'm going to talk about today is the queen of Palmyra (Syria). Her name was Queen Zenobia, and she was the ruler of the glorious ancient city of Palmyra. She was just like the Cleopatra. She was a queen of beauty, intelligence, and ambition who once challenged the mighty Roman Empire by conquering Egypt (270 AD). She continued the exploits of her predecessors for more than 300 years until she was destroyed by the Roman general Aurelius. The authority and power it wielded at the time was evident as we tour the ruins of Palmyra. The sheer size of the site was beyond awe-inspiring.

We have visited most of the ruins of Pompeii and other ancient Roman cities in Italy, including the Foro Romano, and we have also seen many of the remaining ancient Roman ruins in Turkey, Jordan, Tunisia, Egypt, France, Spain, Portugal, and Croatia. But Palmyra was different. In some ways, it was a stunning and beautiful ancient Roman ruin with a different atmosphere than I had ever experienced before. The columns towering over the vast expanse of the desert, the beautiful ancient city in a different kind of graceful and magnificent setting.

Palmyra also had many features common to ancient Roman ruins. For example, temples, amphitheaters, triumphal arches, giant baths, libraries, political assemblies, lodging houses, and squares and markets where citizens gathered. But what's truly sad and lamentable was that many of the ancient artifacts scattered throughout the city. Except for the Temple of Bell, which charges an entrance fee, all the sites and artifacts have been left in a deserted state. This is unacceptable in a country with a competent president and a government with a strong sense of patriotism. Of course, I think the root cause was the people who elected them, but some locals I met said otherwise.

First, let me talk about the place where we stayed in Palmyra. We arrived here around noon after a three-hour long-distance bus ride from Damascus. Actually, we didn't arrive, but the bus dropped us off in front of this dilapidated bunkhouse and left. We had no choice. We entered a dilapidated building labeled as a hotel. The heat was killing us, hovering around 40 degrees Celsius, and we were lucky to have a working fan. There was an old refrigerator downstairs, but it was useless because the power went out frequently.

I asked the owner why the electricity was so bad here. He said, in a word, that this was a country that had already lost hope. Nothing was normal, he said, but it was neither his fault nor his responsibility, so there was nothing he could do about the electricity or the destruction of the World Heritage sites. Some Syrians I met said the same thing, but no one told me or asked me how the poverty they resented came about, who was running the country and how it got to this point, where their country's place was in the era of globalization, and whether its international and diplomatic relations were in order.

Anyway, with the ruins of Palmyra right in front of us, we didn't dare go out in the 40+ degree heat, so we decided to just climb the Arab citadel across the street as the sun was setting, and visit the ruins of Palmyra before sunrise tomorrow morning.

From our hostel we could see the Arab citadel on top of a mountain not too far away. We left the hostel around 5:00 p.m. and started walking towards the citadel, but it was not what it looked like from afar - it was a mountain of stone covered in rubble. But in the end we made it. Of course, it was very difficult for my wife, and I was grateful that she didn't give up until the end. Anyway, it was a strenuous but rewarding hike. Seeing the citadel was one thing, but the joy and reward of looking out over the vast expanse of Palmyra's ancient ruins at sunset was definitely something special.

It was not the era of smart phones, not in 2007 when I traveled to Syria. The difference is night and day. Anyway, we got as much out of it as we put in. The beautiful sunset over an equally vast ancient kingdom built 2,000 years ago on a vast desert was the icing on the cake. It was a very special and precious gift, unique and unlike anything we had ever experienced before.

 Thanks for reading.
