People met on my backpacking (253) - How the French see China and Syria
Damascus, founded over 5,000 years ago, is one of the oldest cities in human history and has been influenced by Christianity and Islam. Its churches and mosques showcase its cultural heritage, with references to Moses, Paul, and John the Baptist in the Bible. Damascus is considered one of the four holy cities by Islam. Despite its distance from Israel and its Arab neighbors, Jerusalem and Damascus were close enough during the ancient Roman Empire, allowing frequent travel. I strongly felt like to follow in their footsteps if possible.
The guesthouse we stayed in was a well-known one, but its facilities and building were outdated. The communal showers were in the basement, and the accommodation was on the first, second, and third floors. The old wooden building with creaking stairs was quaint and romantic in a developed country, but in a less developed country, it was dilapidated and unsafe. The hostel in Syria was unsettling due to the backward country, with corroded rafters, corroded sculptures, and unstable rafters. The laundry, barbershop, and restaurant were unstable, resembling the poor conditions of the 1950s and 60s in Korea.
We stayed in a dormitory room with four beds, two for us, one for a French guy, and one for a local guy. The French would leave early and return late, while the local would sleep all day and go out in traditional Arab dress. I was curious about them. I broke the ice. You know, most foreigners have a preconceived notion that Asians, especially Koreans and Japanese, can't speak English. However, after we started talking, they became more active and interested, especially Westerners, which shows a growing awareness of Korea. I've tried to talk to as many foreign friends as possible while backpacking. I still do. It's the only way to communicate with people all over the world.
A: Hi? Where are you from? Not from China, are you?
J: No. How do you know we are not from China?
A: It's easy for me. I lived in Shanghai for three years.
J: No, really? Why did you stay there for so long?
A: I was teaching English at a private English school there.
J: I see. Are you from the United States or Canada?
A: No, I'm not. I'm French. But I just studied in the U.S. and lived there for ten years.
J: Are you still teaching English there?
A: No. It's finished. I'm not going back to China. Do you know why?
J: Yes. I know. The more you get to know the Chinese, the more you hate them.
A: Not exactly, but it's close. See how I'm so thin? It's because of their food. I mean all the Chinese food is too greasy for me, fat and fat all the time, which I really don't like.
J: Yeah. They eat everything after deep frying or shallow frying. But you know that Chinese food is so popular all over the world, even in Korea.
A: Yeah. I know that. But anyway, my stomach doesn't agree with it. It's terrible.
A man in the room who disliked Chinese food decided to leave Shanghai and move to Damascus, where he planed to learn Arabic and stayed for a long time. He shared similarities with friends who actively try to make their own lives in the world, all with basic English knowledge and an eagerness to learn the local language and culture. One such friend, a French friend, lived in a local friend's house, which is the best way to learn the local language and culture. The man invited us to his friend's house for a night out, but we declined due to the distance. He had lived in Shanghai for three years and plans to spend another extended period in Damascus, Syria. I wanted to talk to him more because he wanted to stay here in Damascus, Syria for a long time.
J: So how did you like teaching English to Chinese students? I mean, they have a good sense of language.
A: I think so. And also, you know, they are very practical people. They are very active in learning English. I think it's easier to teach the Chinese than the French.
J: The word order of the Chinese language is also very similar to English.
A: Oh, yes. That's also an easier part for them.
J: Do you want to teach English here in Damascus?
A: Of course I want to, but I will wait and see if they really want it.
J: What do you mean, wait and see?
A: I mean they have such a strong anti-American sentiment.
J: But if you look at the history, the superpowers have always done that, and the USA, France are no exception. But we Koreans don't have that history, so I'm actually envious of it. Anyway, from what I understand, the Arabs are very eager to learn English. It's funny, they hate Americans so much and yet they want to learn English, which is a contradiction.
A: Whatever you say!
He was French and proud to tell me that he teaches English. It was a surprising phenomenon. Especially considering the snobbish attitudes I've experienced firsthand on my travels to France in the past. Of course, the reality is that English can no longer be ignored. What's even more obvious is that no country can escape the international order and competition governed by the logic of power. The universal language, English, is a powerful spear and shield. The battle between those who have it and those who don't is clear as fire.
Walking around downtown Damascus, I noticed an unusual number of young people. It turned out that most of them were unemployed. I had heard about it before, but when I saw it, it was usually nothing serious. A society with a lot of unemployed people, especially young people, is unstable and even dangerous in any country. I also heard this story from the French guy.
J: What about the social security here in Damascus? There are too many young people hanging around on the streets.
A: No. Problem. You don't have to worry about it. They are though jobless very good guys. They won't hurt you, no, never. They are too good to attack the other people.
J: Really? How do you know?
A: Well, you know if it happens in Paris or any other countries in Europe, they never keep quiet but they make a big demonstration with a horrible violence, brute force. Maybe you saw those jobless guys in paris made really serious brutal demonstrations last year. Just like that.
Mass unemployment in developed countries is a persistent issue, as seen in France last year when young people, including second-generation immigrants, organized protests and violent arson. This discontent was reflected in the government, leading to reduced unemployment. However, in Damascus, Syria, a socialist country, unemployed individuals were not allowed to complain or protest, indicated a lack of hope for the country. Of course, it's reassuring for travelers like us just staying for a few days to know that the security is safe.
Thanks for reading.
