우리 부부는 짬만 나면 지하철을 타고 서울 시내를 포함 경기도 내의 재래시장(在來市場)들을 방문한다. 이는 외국에 나가서도 마찬가지다. 재미있다. 시끌벅적한 분위기가 좋다. 사람 사는 맛이 난다. 현지인들의 참모습이다. 세상 어딜 가나 사람 사는 건 다 마찬가지라는 말이 실감나는 곳이다. 먹거리 볼거리가 넘쳐난다. 동대문시장(짜장면), 경동시장(동태탕), 노량진시장(고등어구이), 신방화시장(코다리찜), 온양온천시장(칼국수), 부천시장(콩국수), 부평시장(회정식), 광장시장(녹두부침개), 인천어시장(밴댕이회무침)...등.

오늘 오전 우리는 김포공항에 볼일이 있어 나갔다. 일을 마친 뒤 아내가 갑자기 부평에 가서 점심을 먹자고 했다. 무조건 OK. 김포공항에서 부평에 가려면 먼저 인천국제공항행 지하철을 탄 뒤 다음 정거장에서 다시 인천행 지하철을 탄다. 인천행 지하철을 기다리고 있는데 큰 배낭을 멘 서구인이 다가왔다. 내가 물었다. “혹시 배낭여행자입니까?” “네.” “당신이 큰 배낭을 메고 있는 모습을 보니 참 보기 좋습니다. 나도 한때 그랬으니까요.” 배낭여행 얘길 하고 있는데 지하철이 왔다. 우리는 지하철 내에서도 대화를 이어갔다.

그는 보스턴에 산다고 했다. 2주일 휴가로 서울과 부산에서 보내고 간다고 했다. 나도 보스턴에 간 적이 있다고 하니, 그는 내가 거기서 뭘 봤냐고 물었다. 먼저 보스턴의 하버드대학교를 방문한 얘길했다. 특히 학생식당에서 다국적 학생들과 대화를 나눈 것이 재미있었다고 했다. 근데 이 친구는 갑자기 부산대학교를 언급하며 나에게 물었다. 정말 엉뚱한 질문이었다. “부산역과 부산대학교는 둘 다 같은 부산인데 왜 부산역은 ‘BUSAN STATION’이며, 부산대학교는 ‘PUSAN UNIVERSITY’이냐. B와 P의 철자가 다르듯이 발음도 다르지만, 부산이란 도시도 두 개의 다른 도시가 되기 때문입니다.” 그는 굳이 B의 유성음(有聲音)과 P의 무성음(無聲音)을 실제로 소리내 보이기도 했다.

마침 지하철 벽에 걸린 지하철 노선표(路線表)에 ‘김포(GIMPO)’라고 적힌 표기가 보였다. 내가 그에게 ‘GIMPO’를 읽어 보라고 했다. 그는 두 개의 발음을 했다. “짐포”와 “김포”였다. 내가 그에게 설명했다. 한국엔 세계가 공통으로 사용하고 있는 매큔-라이샤워 표기법을 따르지 않고 있기 때문이다. 그는 매우 이상하다는 듯이 고개를 저으면 혼란스럽다고 했다. 그에게 그 배경을 설명했다. 한국은 원래 로마자 표기법을 국제사회의 시스템(M-R)과 달리 한국식(MOE)으로 했다.

그러다 한국이 1984년 아시안게임과 1988년 세계올림픽게임을 개최하면서 이때 방문하는 세계인들의 편의(便宜)를 돕기 위해 세계 공용(共用)인 M-R 시스템을 적용했다. 그러나 한국 정부는 2000년부터 다시 옛 방식인 MOE 방식으로 되돌아갔다. 왜? 누구를 위해서? 한국인? 외국인? 암튼, 한국 정부는 아직 로마자 표기법의 용도(用度)와 그 목적성(目的性)이 무엇인지 잘 모르는 것 같다. 이는 한 예에 불과하다. 정치판을 보라. 개판이 따로 없다. 세상이 어떻게 돌아가든 상관없다. 그게 오늘의 한국이다.

한참 얘기 중인데 아내가 자리에서 일어났다. 우리가 내릴 역이다. 우리가 손을 흔들며 작별 인사를 했더니 그는 한국식 인사를 했다. 불과 10여 분 사이에 있었던 일이었다.

참고: 영어 단어의 ‘G(g)’가 ‘ㄱ’ 발음으로 나는 단어(go, get, give, girl...)들, 하지만, ‘ㅈ’로 발음되는 단어들도 많다. gist(지스트,요점) giant(자이언트,거인) giraffe(지라프,기린) gentle(젠틀,젊잖은) germ(점,세균) general(제너럴,일반의) gym(짐,체육관) age(에이지,나이) Ginseng(진셍,인삼) George(조지,사람이름)...등. ** 미국은 물론 세계 공통인 M-R 시스템에 따르면 ‘부산’은 ‘Pusan’이 맞고, ‘김포’는 ‘Kimpo’가 맞다. 이는 ‘김치’와 ‘김밥’을 전 세계에서 계속 ‘Kimchi’, ‘Kimbap’으로 표기하고 있는 이치와 같다.

What I’m thinking about (47) - An American's curiosity heard on a Subway

When I have free time, my wife and I ride the subway to traditional markets in Gyeonggi Province, including downtown Seoul. This is the case even when we travel overseas. It's fun. It shows a local person's life. Everything in the world is similar. There are several things to see and eat. Dongdaemun Market (jajangmyeon), Noryangjin Market (grilled mackerel), Onyang Hot Springs Market (handmade chopped noodles), Bucheon Market (cold bean soup noodles), Bupyeong Market (Sliced Raw Fish), and so on.

This morning, we rode a subway from Gimpo Airport to Bupyeong Market for lunch. We encountered a Westerner with a large rucksack at the subway station. I said, "Are you a backpacker by any chance?" He answered, "Yes." I said, "The way you are wearing a large backpack reminds me of when I used to go backpacking. It was a very free and enjoyable world tour." We kept conversing on the the subway.

He is from Boston. He's returning home after spending two weeks in Seoul and Busan. I informed him that I had also visited Boston. He inquired what I saw there. I said that I recall having a talk with kids in Harvard University's student cafeteria. But this guy suddenly mentioned Pusan National University and questioned me, "Busan Station and Pusan National University are both located in Busan. But I'm curious why Busan Station is 'BUSAN STATION' while Pusan National University is 'PUSAN UNIVERSITY'. Because the pronunciation differs, just as B and P are spelled differently. Busan means "one city is two different cities.“

Asked him to read the marking "Gimpo" on the subway line. He used two different pronunciations. Their names were "Jimpo" and "Gimpo." I explained the reasoning to him. "Because Korea doesn't follow the common McCune-Lyshower notation that the world uses." Shooking his head, indicating that it was puzzling to him . I described the background to him. In Korea, Romanization was initially done in the Korean manner (MOE), rather than the international method (M-R).

When Korea hosted the 1984 Asian Games and the 1988 World Olympic Games, it used the universal MR system to make things easier for international visitors. However, beginning in 2000, the Korean government returned to the previous MOE method. Why? For whom? Koreans? Foreigners? Anyway, the Korean government appears to have no concept what the function and purpose of Romanization are. In Korea, this is only one example. Korean politicians are unconcerned with how the world works, whether in the past or today. That's the awful tragedy of Korea today.

We had been having a fascinating conversation for quite some time when my wife stood up. It was our stop. When we waved farewell, he bowed and said "See ya." In barely 10 minutes, we discussed really significant topics. In reality, such possibilities are commonplace for me.

Note: The English word 'G(g)' is pronounced as a 'ㄱ' (go, get, give, girl...), yet many terms are pronounced as a 'ㅈ.' gist, giant, giraffe, gentleman, germ, general, gym, age, Ginseng, George...etc. ** According to the MR system, which is widely used not just in the United States but across the world, Busan should be 'Pusan' and 'Gimpo' is 'Kimpo'. This is the same rationale that has resulted in 'Kimchi' and 'Kimbap' being consistently labeled as such across the world.
