People met on my backpacking (249) - Japanese attachment to English
.
Recently in Okinawa, I met two remarkable Japanese guys in their mid-70s. One in a restaurant at a business hotel, and the other at a nearby English academy. They shared my age, travel experience, and interest in meeting new people.
The former lived outside Okinawa year-round, where foreign conversations are rare. He chose to stay at a business hotel near international street, where he could meet foreigners. Hearing what he said, I told him similar things that I witnessed. He was a Japanese man I met when I was staying at a guesthouse in Oslo, Norway. He was an executive of a company dispatched to Oslo. The reason why he stayed at the guesthouse was because he had many opportunities to talk with foreigners in English.
A man we met in front of an English academy was curious about his English conversation skills. He wanted to converse with foreigners in English and wanted to travel freely after retiring. However, he struggled with English. I then suggested asking and answering questions in English with foreigners he met on his world trip, but he didn't have the confidence yet.
In my experience, most travelers in their 70s are Westerners, with a higher presence in Mexico and Spain, but more in Thailand, particularly Pattaya. Among Asians, most being Japanese, with a few Koreans. Despite their age, many people in their 70s and 80s could communicate in English.
Two Japanese citizens in their 70s in Thailand and Uzbekistan expressed dissatisfaction with Japan's English education, leading to a sense of alienation and reluctance to study in the U.S. or travel globally. They claim they have lost confidence in English communication and are now reluctant to study or travel abroad.
They said there were structural problems with the Japanese' poor pronunciation of English. Japanese does not have a lower consonant. The Japanese vowel system is also too simplistic than English. They should refer to McDonald's as Magnard. This problem is that the Japanese are used to the sounds that came in from an early age, making it difficult to acquire new pronunciations.
They informed me that smart Japanese leaders had already recognized Japanese structural difficulties. They had proposed that English become Japan's second official language. Of course, it did not happen. They claimed that the Japanese could not debate English at international conferences. The Japanese said they couldn't talk English despite having studied it for at least six years at home and many years abroad.
