양궁 참피온 김우진이 밝힌 비장의 무기 <김우진의 양궁 실력은 애국심에서>

감동의 2024 파리올림픽이 끝났다. 폐회식에서 가장 인상적인 장면 가운데 하나는 불후의 명곡 ‘마이웨이’를 열창하는 프랑스 가수 ‘이술트’의 모습이었다. 사실, 나에겐 ‘이술트’가 열창하는 모습에 내가 처음(1970) 이 노래를 듣고 배우던 때의 ‘프랑크 시나트라’의 표정이 오버랩됐다. 난 이 노래의 원곡 출처가 프랑스라는 것도 처음 알았다. 이 사실을 알기 전엔 “웬 미국 팝송의 상징인 ‘마이웨이’가 나오지?”라고 의아해했다. 암튼, 이 노래는 한 인간이 자신의 삶을 주인답게 당당히 살아온 이야기이다. 그러고 보니 프랑스가 이를 실천한 것 같다. 그들은 누가 뭐라든 ‘내 방식대로’대로 올림픽을 치렀기 때문이다. 오염된 센강, 선수들에 대한 숙식 문제, 지나친 성 평등과 정체성 등 문제가 많았지만.

그러나 뭐니 뭐니 해도 이번 파리올림픽의 하이라이트는 大韓民國을 빛낸 얼굴들이었다. 그들은 하나 같이 大韓民國을 사랑하고 존중했다. 그들은 말이 아닌 행동으로 애국을 보여주었다. 그들은 자랑스럽게 태극기를 가슴에 달고 손에 들고 흔들며 애국가를 불렀다. 이런 장면들이 80억 세계인이 보는 TV 화면에 비쳤다. 이보다 더 멋지고 자랑스러운 애국적 행동이 있을 수 없다. 그 가운데 양궁의 김우진이 있었다. 그는 말했다. “나에게 大韓民國이 없었다면 내가 존재할 수 있을까요? 이렇게 멋지게 성공한 大韓民國이 없었다면 내가 大韓民國을 대표하는 선수가 될 수 있을까요?”

헤밍웨이가 한 말이 생각난다. “위대한 문학작품은 작가가 자기 나라를 진정으로 사랑하고 존중하지 않으면 나오지 않는다.” 한국에 진짜 시인, 소설가, 화가, 음악인은 몇이나 될까? 진짜 정치인과 종교인과 학자, 언론인은 과연 몇이나 될까? 태극기를 자랑스럽게 생각하고 태극기를 자기 집에 걸고 손에 들고 자동차에 달고 달리는 한국인은 몇이나 될까? 나는 이번 파리올림픽을 통해 다시 확인했지만, 각국이 자국(自國)의 국기(國旗)를 얼마나 사랑하는지 그들은 말이 아닌 행동으로 보여주었다는 것.

내가 세계를 경험한 것은 그리고 내가 그들이 부러운 것은 그들의 일관된 국기(國旗) 사랑이었다. 그들은 자기 나라의 국기를 올림픽이나 국제 경기 등 남들이 보는 데에서만 흔들고 소리치지 않았다는 것이다. 우리나라도 이제 그런 수준이 되었으면 희망해 본다.

What I’m thinking about 21 - the archer and his patriotism

The 2024 Paris Olympics are over. One of the most remarkable moments of the closing ceremony was French singer Isult's performance of the legendary song "My Way." Actually, the expression on "Frank Sinatra" when I first heard and learnt the song (1970) matched the way Isult sung it. The song is about a person who proudly lives his life like a master. Come to think of it, it appears that France did this. They did the Olympics in their own unique manner, regardless of what others said. There were several issues, including a filthy Seine River, inadequate housing and playing facilities, and excessive gender equality and identification.

The Korean people were, by far, the most memorable aspect of the Paris Olympics. They demonstrated their patriotism not with words, but with acts. They joyfully donned the Korean national flags over their chests, waved it in their hands, and sang the national song. These sights were vividly shown on television screens viewed by 8 billion people worldwide. This, in my opinion, is the most stunning and patriotic deed possible. Among them was Archery's Kim woo-Jin. He said, "Can I exist if not for the Korea? Would I be able to represent the Korean people if I didn't come from a prosperous Korea?" Well, I think he was fully conscious of the importance of his country, Korea.

I recall Hemingway saying, "A great literary work cannot be produced unless the writer truly loves and respects his or her country." I am curious. How many genuine poets, authors, artists, and musicians are there in Korea? How many legitimate politicians, religious leaders, intellectuals, and journalists are there? How many Koreans are proud of their national flag and display it in their houses, automobiles, and when running? During the Paris Olympics, countries demonstrated their affection for their national flag via acts rather than words.

What I experienced in the globe, and what I envy about them, was their unwavering devotion to the national flag. They didn't only wave and chant their country's flag in public, like at the Olympics or international tournaments. I hope that Korea would now demonstrate such unshakeable patriotism.
