오늘 이야기는 삿포로 공원에서 만난 한국인과의 얘기다. 우리가 묵고 있는 삿포로 숙소 근처에는 ‘도요히라’ 강(江)이 있고 그 옆엔 아주 잘 조성된 공원이 하나 있다. ‘나카지마 공원’인데 제법 큰 호수도 있고 울창한 숲과 고목(古木)들 그리고 옛 사무라이들이 차(茶)를 마셨다는 조그만 목조 다실(茶室)도 잘 보존돼 있다. 일본인의 오랜 공원 문화와 역사의식을 잘 보여주는 단면이기도 하다. 조용한 숲속과 호숫가에는 벤치가 곳곳에 놓여 있다. 어느 나라나 마찬가지지만 공원에 가면 항상 대화를 나눌 친구들이 있다.
오늘도 그랬다. 의외로 한국인 여성이었다. 우리가 앉은 벤치 옆의 벤치에 앉은 30대 후반의 여성과 10살쯤 보이는 여자 아이가 한국말을 하는 걸 들었다. 당연히 반가움에 인사를 했다. 알고 보니 내겐 여간 반가운 사람이 아닐 수 없었다. 왜냐면 그녀는 내가 까마득히 잊고 있던 1996년 잠시 들렀던 아프리카 중부 내륙국인 ‘르완다’를 다시 생각나게 했기 때문이다. 당시 나는 아프리카를 1990년부터 연차(連次)적으로 이집트 모로코 남아공 등 서아프리카를 제외한 나머지 지역의 대부분을 혼자 자유롭게 배낭 여행했다. 그러나 르완다와 부룬디는 제외했다. 대학살이 자행된 내전(內戰)은 끝났지만 그래도 감히 도전할 엄두가 나지 않았기 때문이다. . 1994년 이곳에서 ‘투치족’과 ‘후투족’의 잔혹한 보복전의 싸움이 있었다. 악명 높은 ‘르완다 대학살’로 이어졌다. 그것도 단 100일 만에 100만 명 가까이 학살됐다. 학살 도구는 총이나 독가스가 아니었다. 칼과 창과 몽둥이였다. 그 잔인성이 세계를 더 경악게 했다. 이를 비유하면, 스탈린이 우크라이나인 수백만 명을 굶겨 죽인 ‘홀로도모르’ 유고슬라비아의 ‘인종청소’, 나치의 ‘홀로코스트’, 폴포트의 ‘킬링필드’, 북한의 ‘고난의 행군’ 등과 같다. 1990년대 최악의 제노사이드(대학살)라 칭한다. 참혹한 시대였다. 쉽게 갈 수 없었던 이유였다.
그런데 바로 이분이 최근까지 르완다에서 살았다는 것이다. 3년을 살았다. 남편의 해외 근무지였다. 얼마 전에 근무지를 르완다에서 일본으로 옮겼다. 내가 물었다. 르완다의 생활환경은 어땠는지. 이제 어느 정도 사회 안정이 되었는지. 물가와 아이의 교육비 그리고 주택비는. 그곳에 한국인은 얼마나 있는지. 한국 음식은 어떻게 만들어 먹는지 등등. . 그녀의 답:르완다는 이제 안정된 곳이다. 비록 아직 1인당 GDP가 1000 달러 수준이지만 물가가 워낙 싸서 불편이 없다. 특히 고기, 채소, 과일 등 농축산물이 아주 싸다. 고추장 된장은 한국에서 공수(空輸)한다. 물론 공산품(工產品)은 비싸다. 집 월세는 방 서너 개 기준 월 40~50만 원에서 70~80만 원까지 다양하지만 비싼 편이다. 가령 40만 원대 지역의 집에 살면 수돗물이 매일 6시간씩 단수가 된다. 70만 원대 지역엔 그런 불편이 전혀 없다. 전기 단전(斷電)은 전혀 없다. 가정부를 두는데 월 5만 원이면 충분하다. 인건비가 아주 싸다. 사람들은 대체로 온순하고 정직하다. 르완다에도 우간다와 말라위 등 다른 나라처럼 한국의 새마을 운동이 활발하다. 그 덕택에 배곯는 사람이 없어졌다. 한국을 은혜의 나라로 생각한다. 딸 아이는 국제학교에 다녔다. 매주 일요일 교회에서 교민들을 만난다. 20~30명이 모였다. . 딸아이에게 물었다. 몇 살이니?/ 11살이요./ 일본에 오니 어때?/ 아직 모르겠어요./ 르완다가 좋았니?/ 네./ 뭐가 제일 좋았니?/ 친구들이요. 친구들이 제일 보고 싶어요./ 국제학교니까 친구들도 다 외국인이었겠네./ 네. 영국 애들과 독일 애들이 제일 많았어요./ 그럼 넌 독일어도 할 줄 아니?/ 아니요. 다 영어로 말해요./ 영어가 어렵지 않았니?/ 아니요./ 영어를 어떻게 배웠니?/ 그냥 학교에 가면 저절로 배워요./ 어떻게?/ 다 영어로 말하니까요./ 한국말이 쉬워 영어가 쉬워?/ 다 쉬워요./ 나에게 영어로 말해볼래? 아무거나 물어봐?/ . 꼬맹이의 질문: 일본에 사세요?/ 아니. 우린 여행 온 거야./ 일본이 좋아요?/ 그럼. 좋지. 맛있는 것도 많고, 사람도 친절하고, 이렇게 좋은 공원도 많고./ 영어를 잘 하시네요. 언제 배웠어요?/ 어릴 때. 너처럼 어릴 때부터 영어로 말하는 것이 재미있었어./ 영어 외에 어느 나라 말을 할 수 있어요?/ 일본어, 태국어, 중국어, 프랑스어, 스페인어, 독일어, 이태리어…/ 와~ 진짜요?/ 그럼, 외국어를 많이 알면 아주 재미있고 편안하고 안전하단다./ . 내가 말해볼게. 아리가또 고자이마스, 컵쿤캅, 셰셰, 땅끄센, 슈크란, 테섹꿀러, 무차스 그라샤스, 그라찌에, 메르시 보꾸, 믈쯔 메스크, 에프가리스또, 오브리 가두, 꿔세넴, 베당크트, 스파시보, 깜언, 단야바드, 슈크란, 블라고다리 아띠, 흐발라, 아산떼, 옹기아봉가, 탁, 디야꾸옘, 디아꾸유, 징꾸예, 팔라민데릿, 라흐멧, 떼르마까씨, 흐발라밤, 키토스, 토다, … . 어때요? 지금까지 내가 한 말이 무슨 말인 줄 알아요?/네. 몇 개는 알아요. ‘감사합니다’입니다. 아리가또 고자이마스, 아산떼, 응기아봉가, 땅크…/맞아요. 모두 다 감사합니다. 고맙습니다, 표현이에요. 이 말만 잘하면 세계 여행을 할 때 아주 아주 좋아요. 누구나 좋아하는 말이니까요. 그리고 또 있어요. 이런 말을 많이 알고 있으면 기분이 좋아져요. 행복해져요. 마지막으로 하나 더 물었다. “나중에 크면 어느 나라에 먼저 여행을 가고 싶어요?” “아프리카요.” 자연스러운 답이었다. 어릴 때 교육과 생활환경의 영향이었다. . 실제로 나는 세계 여행을 할 때 그 나라에서 꼭 필요한 표현 몇 개를 숙지해 사용한다. 첫째, 감사합니다(Thank you). 둘째, 미안합니다(I’m sorry). 셋째, 제발~, 꼭~ 부탁합니다(Please). 넷째, 맛있어요(delicious, tasty, Very good). 다섯째, 멋있어요(wonderful, nice, cool, lovely, fantastic). . *상황에 따라서 그 나라 말로 ‘사랑한다’는 말을 외워두고 활용하면 효과 만점일 때가 있다.(*태국어를 예로 들면, ‘찬 락 쿤’하면, 나는 당신을 사랑한다‘는 말인데, 당신에 해당하는 ’쿤‘에 ’태국 음식‘, ’태국 사람들‘, ’똠양꿍‘, ’망고주스‘…. 등 필요에 따라 해당하는 말을 넣으면 된다. 상대로부터 호감과 좋은 인상을 받는 요령이다. 가령, 어느 외국인이 서툰 발음이지만, “나는 한국을 사랑해요, 한국 노래를 사랑해요, 한국 김치와 김밥을 사랑해요,”라고 하면 저절로 미소가 지어지면서 호감이 가는 이치와 전혀 다르지 않다. 물론 나는 이 꼬맹이에게 힌트를 준 셈이다. 언제가 녀석이 그 효과를 볼 것이다. . (**물론 아프리카에는 이에 못지않은 우간다의 검은 히틀러, 이디 아민도 있었다. 그 역시 무시무시한 대 학살자(虐殺者)였다. 그러나 그의 시대(1971-1979)는 이미 끝났다. 이미 10년 이상 세월이 흘렀는데도 그 악명(惡名)이 너무나 끔찍해 여행자들은 우간다에 가기를 꺼렸다. 나는 갔었다(1995). 그리고 바로 실감했다. 내가 무서운 곳에 왔다는 것을. 내가 묵었던 숙소 건물이 이디 아민 정권 때 사용했던 감옥(監獄)이었다. 개조(改造) 없이 그대로 숙소로 사용했다. 내 방문(房門)은 물론 다른 방문도 당시 감옥의 방문 그대로였다. 묵직한 철문(鐵門) 그대로였다. 방을 드나들 때마다 으스스한 기분이었다.) . (***당시 아프리카 대부분이 그랬다. 너무 가난했다. 대한민국은 그때나 지금이나 그들과 비교불가(比較不可)의 성공한 부자나라이다. 그런데도 한국인들은 여전히 ’헬조선‘이라고 한다. 망하기를 바란다. 이런 병적(病的) 피해의식(被害意識)은 치유불가(治癒不可)인 것 같다. 연 3000만 명 이상의 한국인이 세계 여행을 한다. 어느 나라에서 무엇을 보고 듣고 느끼기에 그럴까. 궁금하기 그지없다. 그러나 다행히 모두가 그런 건 아니다. 오늘 ’나카지마‘공원에서 만난 아이와 아이 엄마는 ’르완다‘에서 3년 살면서 大韓民國이 무척 자랑스러웠다고 했다. 아프리카인들이 한국을 너무너무 부러워하고 고마워하는 모습을 봤기 때문이라고.)

People on my backpacking 211 - Korean Residents of Rwanda Met at Sapporo Park . Today's story is about a Korean I met at Sapporo Park. The 'Toyohira' River flows near the Sapporo Hotel, where we are staying, and there is a well-established park next to it. Nakajima Park contains a huge lake, a deep forest, ancient trees, and a tiny wooden tea room where old soldiers, Samurai sipped tea that has been carefully kept. It also includes a part demonstrating long-standing Japanese park culture and historical consciousness. . Surprisingly, she was a Korean woman. She was seated on a bench next to us, with her daughter. I overheard them chatting in Korean. I said hi to her. She reminded me of my brtiefly visitted there in 1996 she stayed 3 yers of living in Rwanda, Central Africa. Since 1990, I've freely backpacked across the Africa which includes Egypt, Morocco, and South Africa. However, I eliminated Rwanda and Burundi. Despite the fact that the civil war had ended, I still refused to challenge myself. . In 1994, the Tutsi and Hutu fought a horrific civil war. This resulted in the infamous "genocide" in Rwanda. It killed roughly a million people in only 100 days. The implements of slaughter were neither firearms or toxic gas. The weapons were knives, spears, and clubs. Their brutality stunned the whole globe. To compare them, consider Stalin's "Holodomor," which starved millions of Ukrainians to death, the Nazis' "Holocaust," Poland's "Killingfield," N. Korea's "March of Suffering," and so on. It was the deadliest genocide of the 1990s. It was a miserable moment. . Surprisingly, she spent three years in Rwanda before moving lately. She lived together based on her husband's employment. They just relocated from Rwanda to Japan. I questioned her about the living circumstances in Rwanda. How about social stability there? What about costs, children's education, and housing? How many Koreans were present. How to prepare Korean cuisine, etc. . Her response: Rwanda is now ok. GDP per capita is around $1,000. The cost is so low that there is no inconvenience. Meat, vegetables, and fruits are very cheap. Soybean paste is flown from Korea. The rent for a home varies by area. For example, if you live in a $400 area, your tap water is turned off for 6 hours each day. Power is Ok. A housekeeper's wage is $50 per month. People are typically honest. The Saemaul Movement of Korea is active in Rwanda, as well as in Uganda and Malawi. As a result, no one is starving or hungry. They regard Korea as a land of grace. . I asked her daughter. How old are you?/ Eleven years old./ Do you enjoy Japan?/ I'm not sure yet./ Did you enjoy Rwanda the most?/ Yes./ What did you like most?/My friends. I miss them most./ I suppose they were all foreigners, right?/ Some from England and Germany./ Can you speak German, too?/ Not really. We all speak English./ Wasn't English difficult?/ No problem./ How did you learn English?/I just learned it in school./How?/We all speak English./Do you have any questions for me in English? . Her kid’s questions, "Do you live in Japan?"/ No. We are traveling./ Do you enjoy Japan?/ Yes. There are many good foods, kind people, and wonderful parks like this./ You speak English fluently. All of these terms are ideal for traveling throughout the world. Everyone likes them. And these are lovely words. "Which country do you want to go to first when you grow up?" I inquired./ "Africa."/ As I anticipated, she demonstrated the value of education and living situations while kids are young. . In fact, when I go throughout the world, I memorize and utilize certain terms that are exclusive to that nation. First, (Thank you.) Second, (I’m sorry.) Third, (Please.) Fourth, (Delicious. Very good. Tasty.) Fifth, (Amazing, good, cool, gorgeous, and magnificent.) . *Depending on the situation, remembering and saying 'I love you' in the language of that nation might be ideal (*I'll use Thai as an example). Chan Rak Kun means "I love you." If you write'mango juice' instead of 'Kun' in this statement, it suggests you enjoy mango juice. When you utilize this term, you make a positive impression on the locals. For example, if a foreigner says "I love Korea" with a sloppy pronunciation, we still enjoy it. . (**Of course, Uganda's black Hitler, Idi Amin, existed in Africa too. He, too, was a wicked mass murderer. However, his days (1971-1979) were finished. More than a decade had gone, and the notoriety was so bad that tourists were hesitant to visit Uganda. But I've tried it (1995). And I recognized immediately away that I had arrived in a dangerous place. The guesthouse where I slept was the same jail Idi Amin used. They utilized it as a guesthouse. It was a massive steel door. I felt uneasy every time I entered and exited the room.) . (***At the time, much of Africa was extremely poor. Korea is a wealthy country that is unmatched to them both then and now. Nonetheless, Koreans are still saying as 'hell Korea.' Every year, more than 30 million Koreans travel throughout the globe. But they know nothing what the world is. Fortunately, not everyone is like this. After three years of living in Rwanda, the mother and daughter I met in Nakajima Park today expressed their pride in Korea. They claimed to have witnessed Africans' jealousy and appreciation for Korea.)
