기사 제목에 ‘이모’라는 호칭이 문제다. 외국인들과 대화를 하다 보면 난감한 지경에 빠질 때가 많다. 그들의 질문에 답을 못할 때다. 그중 하나가 바로 호칭 문제다. 40여 년 전, 미국인 등 외국인에게 한국어를 가르친 적이 있다. 역시 가장 어려운 것 중 하나가 바로 호칭 문제였다. 외국인들은 형, 누나, 언니, 삼촌, 이모, 고모, 선생님, 선배님 등 한국인들이 즐겨 부르는 호칭을 이해 못 한다. 아니 오해한다. 사실이 아니기 때문이다.

내가 왜 당신의 형이고 누나고 이모고 선생님…이냐는 것이다. 그들이 이런 호칭을 사용하는 경우는 실제로 친인척이거나 종교적 의미(brother) 그리고 함께 싸운 전우(clans) 정도에 한한다. 물론 문화의 차이다. 그러나 설명되지 않는 문화는 공감받기 어렵다. 문화교류의 실패다. 특히 오늘날 한국의 위상을 볼 때 조선일보 등 한국 신문은 동시에 세계인들도 많이 본다는 것을 염두에 둬야 한다. ‘이모’라는 단어를 기사 제목에 단다는 것은 분명 문제가 있다.

What I’m thinking of...3 – name calling problem

The term 'Aunt' in this morning's Chosun Ilbo piece is a concern. I frequently find myself in awkward situations while conversing with foreigners. When I am unable to answer their queries. One of them is the name calling issue. About 40 years ago, I taught Korean to outsiders, including Americans. Of course, name calling was the most difficult issue. Foreigners don't comprehend what Koreans name them, such as elder brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, instructors, and others. Right, they do misunderstand. Because this is not true.

They respond, "Why am I your brother, sister, aunt, teacher..." If they use this phrase, it only refers to relatives, brothers, and "clans" who fought alongside one other. Of course, there is a cultural difference. However, an incomprehensible culture is difficult to empathize with. It indicates a lack of cultural interchange. Given Korea's current situation, Korean publications such as the Chosun Ilbo are read by many people all over the world at the same time. It is undoubtedly troublesome to include the term "aunt" in the title of an article.
