여행 중 만난 사람들 204 – 태국 파타야 한국인 살인사건을 보면서 (English version is below.)

2004. 5. 12. 신문을 보고 깜짝 놀랐다. 태국 파타야의 어느 저수지에서 34세 한국인 남성이 시멘트로 채워진 드럼통에 담긴 채 시신으로 발견됐다는 것이다. 피해자 1명도 가해자 3명도 모두 한국인들이라는 말에 더 놀랐다. 5월 13일 오전 현재 용의자 중 한 명을 국내 전북 정읍에서 체포했다고 한다. 아직 태국에 남아있다는 나머지 용의자도 빨리 체포해 사건의 진상을 철저히 밝혀졌으면 한다. 이런 참극(慘劇) 예방에 큰 도움이 될 것이다. (*고인의 명복을 빕니다.)

이곳 파타야는 세계적 관광지다. 세계인들이 다 모여든다. 크고 작은 사건·사고가 없을 리 없다. 사고사(事故死)는 흔히 있지만, 살인 사건은 거의 보지 못했다. 더더욱 이곳에서 한국인이 한국인을 살해했다는 뉴스는 충격적이었다. 물론 필리핀에서도 이와 같은 한국인끼리의 살인 사건이 간혹 보도되기는 했지만, 대부분 내가 여행 중에 직접 보고 들은 것은 한국인이 한국인을 상대로 돈을 갈취하거나 사기 치는 야비(野卑)한 인간들 정도였다.

이곳 파타야에서 내가 만난 많은 외국인 여행자는 다 좋은 친구들이었다. 만남의 장소는 개방된 곳이며 해변(海邊) 등이다. 늦은 밤과 한적하고 폐쇄된 곳은 아니었다. 그들과 나눈 대화 내용을 세계인들과 공유한다는 의미로 오랫동안 즐거운 마음으로 SNS에 소개하고 있다. 유감스럽게도 이런 사건을 접하면 마음이 서글퍼진다.

국내 TV나 신문만 보면 궁금증이 더 커진다. 혹시나 아는 사람은 아닌지, 일면식(一面識)이라도 있는 사람은 아닌지. 한국 언론은 나이만 밝힐 뿐 이름과 얼굴을 감추기 때문이다. 외신(外信)을 검색하니 AP. BBC. Bangkok, Singapore, Asian 등이 줄줄이 나왔다. 피해자의 성명과 얼굴이 그대로 실렸다. 사건 내용도 더 자세했다. 피해자가 납치된 장소와 시간은 방콕 시내였으며 새벽 2시였다.

배낭 여행자들은 주로 게스트하우스에 묵는다. 많은 정보 교환 등 이야기 보따리도 풀어놓는다. 그중에서 빠지지 않는 것은 여행 중 일어난 사건·사고 이야기다. 선-후진국 다 해당된다. 미국, 스페인, 프랑스, 이태리, 헝가리, 브라질, 아르헨, 페루, 남아공, 짐바브웨, 우간다, 모로코, 이집트, 태국, 중국, 베트남, 인도, 파키스탄 호주 등 헤아릴 수 없이 많다. 제일 많은 건 사기(詐欺)와 강도 도둑 소매치기. 폭력으로 팔다리 골절 등 크게 다치는 경우. 그리고 실종(失踪) 사건이었다.

실종 사고를 가장 많이 본 곳은 인도 콜카타와 델리 뭄바이 등. 숙소 게시판에 실종 메모가 항상 몇 장씩 붙어있었다. 주로 여성이었으며 일본인이 가장 많았다. 브라질과 페루에선 총기 강도를 당한 미국인 여성과 영국 여성을, 태국과 호주에선 강간범과 싸우다 다리가 부러지는 등 죽다 살아남은 역시 영국 여성. 그는 깁스하고 있었다. 물론 나를 포함한 한국인 남녀 피해자들도 많았다.

나름대로 터득한 사고 예방책:

1. 밤에 돌아다니지 않는다. 특히 늦은 밤과 인적이 드문 곳엔 안 간다.
2. 남의 눈에 띌만한 고급 옷을 입거나 휴대품을 소지하지 않는다.
3. 사탕이나 음료수 음식 등을 받아먹지 않는다.
4. 낯선 사람을 따라가지 않는다.
5. 자유 여행 역시 공짜가 아님을 절대 잊어선 안 된다.

(*누군가 붙잡거나, 강제로 끌어당기거나, 차에 태우려 할 땐 강력히 저항하며 최대한 큰소리로 외친다.)

People met on my backpacking 204 - My feeling seeing the murder of a Korean in Pattaya, Thailand

On May 12, 2004, I was stunned to learn that a 34-year-old Korean guy was discovered dead in a pond in Pattaya, Thailand, inside a cement drum. I was shocked to find that both the victim and the three criminals were Korean. On the morning of May 13, one of the suspects was captured in Korea. I hope the other suspects, who are still in Thailand, get caught soon and the truth about the case is disclosed completely. It will be a huge help for preventing such a disaster. *I pray for the souls of the departed.

Pattaya is a destination where people from all over the world meet. There are several miscellaneous criminal cases and accidents. However, I seldom seen a murder case. I was particularly shocked to learn that a Korean killed another Korean here. Right, the same thing has been reported on occasion in the Philippines. However, the majority of what I seen and heard in person during the world trip included mean Koreans extorting money or cheating Koreans.

Many of the international visitors I met here in Pattaya became close friends. The gathering areas were mostly open spaces, such as beaches. It wasn't a quiet or closed spot late at night. For a long time, I've been posting about my talkings with them on social media so that others across the world may see my stuff. Unfortunately, when I come across an incidence like this, I feel so sorry.

When I watch domestic tv or read newspapers, I become more curious. It's because I'm wondering if the victim was someone I know. Because the Korean media only reveals his age while concealing his identity and face. When I looked for international media, AP, BBC, Bangkok, Singapore, and Asian showed up one after another. The victim's name and face were on it. The case was also described in further depth. The victim's kidnapping occurred in downtown Bangkok about 2 a.m.

Backpacking travelers typically stay at GHs. We share a lot of information, etc. Mostly is a narrative of travel-related occurrences and mishaps. This includes practically every country. USA, UK, Spain, France, Italy, Hungary, Brazil, Argentina, Peru, S. Africa, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Morocco, Egypt, Thailand, China, Vietnam, India, Pakistan, and Australia. The most common kinds of crimes include fraud, robbery, pickpocketing, and major injuries caused by violence, such as limb fracture.

The places where I witnessed the most disappearances were Kolkata, India, Delhi, and Mumbai. There were usually a few missing messages on the bulletin board in the GHs. The majority were women, mainly Japanese. British and American women were robbed in Brazil and Peru, while British women in Thailand and Australia damaged their legs resisting a rapist. She wore a cast. Of course, there were many Korean male and female victims, including me.

Tips to avoid accidents:

1. Avoid going out at night. Especially late at night and in uninhabited areas.
2. Don't show too many expensive outfits and carry-on stuff.
3. Never take other people's food, sweets, or drinks.
4. Don't follow strangers.
5. Remember that free travel is not free.
