경험에 의하면 여행 중에 만나는 외국인 여행자들, 특히 태국 ‘파타야’에서 만나는 그들은 대부분이 서구인들이었다. 가끔 보는 비서구인(非西毆人) 여행자를 보면 더 적극적으로 다가가 대화를 시도했다. 국적이 궁금해서. 오늘 만난 사람은 스리랑카인이다. 사실 인도계 사람들은 직접 인사를 나눠보기 전엔 그가 인도인인지, 방글라인인지 파키스탄인인지 혹은 스리랑카인인지 모른다. 겉모습이 거의 같기 때문이다. 인도 인종(人種)은 크게 둘 중 하나이다. 북방의 인도 아리아인이거나 남방의 드라비다족이다.

그는 20대 중반의 젊은이로 태국을 배낭여행 중이었다. 스리랑카인 배낭여행자를 본 건 처음이다. 분명 세상은 변하고 있었다(*사실 알고 보면 세계여행을 맘껏 즐기는 국민은 약 230개국 중, 한국 포함 선진국 40~50개국에 불과하다. 축복받은 국민이다). 암튼, 그가 태국에 온 이유는 이곳이 불교 국가의 메카로 보기 때문이라고. 불심(佛心)이 아주 깊은 젊은이였다. 스리랑카 어디에 사느냐고 물었더니 ‘콜롬보’에 산다고 했다. 스리랑카의 수도(首都)다. 그는 내가 묻는 말에 답을 할 뿐 질문은 없었다. 영어도 곧잘 하는데 외국인과의 대화에 매우 낯설어하는 젊은이였다.

그러나 그는 내가 ‘콜롬보’를 여행했다고 하자 표정이 달라지며 입을 열기 시작했다. “언제 갔었느냐? 콜롬보 어디에 묵었으며 무엇을 보았느냐? 콜롬보 외 어디를 가보았느냐? 스리랑카 사람들을 어떻게 생각하느냐? 한국에도 스리랑카 사람들이 많으냐? 콜롬보에 한국의 삼성 전자제품이 없는 곳이 없다. 언젠가 한 번 한국의 사찰(寺刹)을 꼭 보고 싶다.” 등 한국에 관한 궁금증을 마구 쏟아냈다.

그의 질문에 답했다. 1996년 인도 남부 여행 중에 갔다. 콜롬보에서 5일, ‘캔디’에서 7일 있었다. 콜롬보 시내 곳곳을 구경했고 시내에서 버스로 해수욕장 두 곳도 갔다. 멋진 비치였다(*당시 독일인들이 많음에 놀랐다). 콜롬보에서 일반 기차로(당시 기차 상태는 인도는 물론 페루 이집트 등 대부분 후진국이 그랬듯이 아주 낡은 기차로) 약 5시간을 달려 도착했다(*지금은 약 3시간 소요). 가는 도중에 본 끝없이 펼쳐진 거대한 녹색 차(茶)밭 풍경, 망태를 메고 찻잎을 따던 여인들의 그림 같은 모습, 그리고 ‘캔디’의 불교 성지(聖地)인 불치사(*부처의 치아(齒牙) 사리를 모셔놓은 곳) 방문“ 등. (*세계의 크고 작은 차밭들-인도의 다즈릴링 일본 대만 홍콩 우간다…등-을 많이 봤지만, 아직 스리랑카의 차밭보다 더 아름다운 곳을 못 봤다.)

사실 내가 이 친구에게 가장 자세히 그리고 기분 좋게 말해준 얘기는 따로 있었다. 스리랑카인 젊은 부부에 관한 이야기였다. 이들은 한국(경기도 내 가구공장)에서 3년 동안 열심히 일해서 번 돈으로 고향에 돌아와 이층집을 짓고 아래층은 식당을 한다는 얘기였다. 그들은 한국을 은인(恩人)의 나라로 여기고 있었다. 그래서 그 부부는 나에게도 그랬듯이 한국인을 보면 먼저 와서 인사를 했다. (*당시엔 참으로 듣기 어려운 한국에 대한 칭찬이었다. 가슴이 훈훈했던 순간이었다.)

내가 그들을 만난 곳은 ‘콜롬보’의 어느 재래시장이었다(*어느 나라든 재래시장만큼 현지인들의 참모습을 보여주는 곳이 없기에 좋아한다). 장마당에 펼쳐놓은 온갖 잡동사니를 구경하고 있을 때였다. 그들은 내게 다가와 한국말로 “안녕하세요? 한국인이지요?”라고 했다. 나는 깜짝 놀랐다. 엉겁결에 인사를 받았지만 동시에 긴장된 순간이기도 했다. 그럴만한 이유가 있었다.

1990년대에 이미 한국에는 동남아 여러 나라 사람들이 들어왔다. 소위 말하던 한국인들이 꺼린 3D 업종의 일(*어렵고 더럽고 위험한 일)을 도맡아 했다. 문제는 이들 상당수는 한국에 있는 동안 악덕(惡德) 업주로부터 임금을 제대로 못 받았거나, 욕설, 손찌검 등 부당한 대우를 받고 돌아갔다는 것이다. 그런 악소문(惡所聞)은 금방 퍼졌다. 그들은 자기 나라를 찾는 한국인들을 비난하고 나아가 위협을 가하는 사례가 왕왕 있었던 때다. 실제로 나는 이런 경험을 두 번 한 뒤였기에 더 민감했다. 네팔 국경을 넘을 때와 필리핀의 어느 성당에서다. 나는 이들로부터 한국인들을 거세게 욕하고 폭언하는 걸 면전에서 들었다. 창피했다. 마음이 썩 편치 않았다. 이 친구는 내 이야기를 조용히 듣고 있었다. 반문(反問)은 없었다. 생각이 깊은 친구로 보였다.

(**당시 인도 남부 해안 마을인 ‘코발람’에서 한 달간 여행 중이었다. 근처에 ‘뜨리반드룸’ 국제공항이 있었다. 말이 국제공항이지 참으로 초라했다. 공항 대기실에서 40대로 보이는 한 서구인 배낭여행자가 내게 다가와 물었다. “어디선가 본 것 같은데 혹시 신촌에 살지 않나요?” 난 깜짝 놀랐다. 알고 보니 그는 내가 한동안 근무했던 대학에서 1년 시강(시간강사)을 했다. 그는 미국인이었다. 그의 배낭여행 경력은 화려했다. 여비가 떨어지면 영어를 가르쳐 비용을 조달했다. 영미권 친구들의 공통점이기도 했다. 그와 함께 콜롬보에 도착했다. 그는 바로 ‘캔디’로 갔고 나는 ‘콜롬보’를 먼저 보고(5일간), 뒤에 캔디로 가서 그와 합류했다. 그와 함께 7일을 보냈다. 가장 인상적이었던 건 그와 함께 있는 동안 끼니마다 계란을 삶아 먹었고 뜨거운 커피를 마셨다는 것. 당시엔 민박이나 게스트하우스엔 커피 포터도 뜨거운 물도 제공되지 않았다. 그는 휴대용 미니 히터를 가지고 있었다. 그것으로 웬만한 건 다 해결했다. 뿐만 아니다. 휴대용 정수기(淨水器)도 지참했다. 서구인들과 함께 숙식을 해보면 역시 여행문화가 생활화된 몸에 밴 그들의 실용주의(實用主義)를 실감한다. 잊지 못할 여행 친구 중 한 명이다.)

이처럼 여행 중에 만나는 외국인들과 대화를 나누다 보면 까맣게 잊고 살았던 흥미진진했던 옛 추억이 되살아난다. 기쁨과 보람이 배가 되기도 한다. 부가가치(附加價値)의 덕을 독특히 보는 행운아다.

People met on my backpacking 203 - a pleasant experience in Sri Lanka

The majority of people I encounter in Pattaya, Thailand, are Westerners. So, if I encounter a non-Western visitor, I approach them more actively and attempt to speak. It's because I am curious about their nationality. The guy I met today is Sri Lankan. In fact, when I look at Indians, I'm not sure if they're from India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, or Sri Lanka. Because they seem practically identical. The Indian race is mainly one of two. They are either Indian Aryans in the north or Dravidas in the south.

He was a young guy in his mid-20s who was traveling through Thailand. It was the first time I'd seen a Sri Lankan free backpacker. (*Out of over 230 nations, only 40 to 50 industrialized countries, including Korea, enjoy as much foreign travel as possible. They're blessed. Anyway, he said that he moved to Thailand since it was the largest and most developed Buddhist country. He was a young man who was attracted with Buddhism. When I inquired where he resided in Sri Lanka, he replied that he lived in Colombo, the country's capital. He answered my query, no asking. He spoke English fluently but was not used to conversing with outsiders.

But when I told him I'd been to Colombo, he opened his mouth wide and smiled. "When did you go?" Where did you stay in Colombo and what did you see? Where have you gone except Colombo? What do you think of the Sri Lankans? Are there many Sri Lankans in Korea? Colombo is filled with Samsung things. "I really want to visit a Korean temple someday." etc.

I responded to all of his queries. "I visited there in 1996 while on a tour to southern India. Stayed five days in Colombo, seven in Kandy. I looked about the city and visited two beaches accessible by bus from downtown Colombo. It was a pleasant beach (*there were more Germans than natives at the time). It took roughly five hours to get to Kandy by normal train from Colombo. On my trip, I saw an endless stream of vast green tea fields and gorgeous scenes of ladies holding net bags and harvesting tea leaves. I went to Bulyeongsa, a Buddhist shrine in Kandy. etc. (*I have seen huge and little tea fields all over the world (Dajrilling in India, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Uganda), but I have never seen a lovely tea field in Sri Lanka.)

In fact, I told him another anecdote in great detail when in a good mood. It's about a young Sri Lankan couple. They returned to their hometowns with the big money they gained after working hard for three years in Korea (in a furniture factory in Gyeonggi-do), where they built a two-story house and managed a restaurant below. They saw Korea as a country of givers. So when they spotted Koreans, they came first to welcome them, just like they did with me. (*At the time, that was a compliment to Korea, which was tough to hear. It was a heartwarming moment.

I met them at Colombo's traditional market (*I often go see the open markets because they allow me to glimpse the actual essence of the natives). It was while I was gazing at all of the junk stuff that was littering the marketplace. The couple approached me and said in Korean, "Hello? You're Korean, right?" I enjoyed how they unexpectedly showed up and greeted me, but it was also a nervous time. The causes are as follows.

In the 1990s, immigrants from various Southeast Asian nations arrived to Korea and took over positions in the 3D industry (*difficult, dirty, and dangerous work) that Koreans were unwilling to undertake. The problem was that many of them were underpaid by unethical company owners while in Korea, or were treated cruelly, such as swearing and hitting them. Such awful news circulated rapidly. So, at the time, they occasionally ridiculed and threatened Korean visitors to their nation. In fact, I'd experienced these horrific situations twice. It occurred when I crossed the Nepalese border and visited a church in the Philippines. I overheard them cursing and verbally assaulting Koreans. I felt terribly humiliated.

(***I was on a month-long trip from Kovalam, a southern Indian seaside resort. Tribandrum International Airport was easily accessible nearby. In the airport waiting lounge, a Western traveler approached me and said, "I think I saw you somewhere in Sinchon?" I was startled. He delivered a yearlong lecture at the college where I worked. He was American. We landed in Colombo together. He traveled directly to Kandy, and I spent five days in Colombo before heading to Kandy to join him for seven days. The most amazing aspect for me was that when I was with him, We cooked eggs for every meal and drank hot coffee. He also packed a small micro heater and water filter. When I stay with Westerners, I see their pragmatic approach, in which travel culture has become a part of everyday life. (He is one of my unforgettable trip companions.)

The significance of talk can't be overstated. It's because I may experience delight and reward again by recalling thrilling old moments from my life that I had entirely forgotten. Its purpose is to see the benefits of added value in a unique way. The best investment is travel!!
