태국 파타야에는 6개월 단위로 장기 체류를 하는 서양인들이 많다. 아니 모두가 다 서양인이다. 적어도 내가 보기엔 그랬다. 실제로 한국인은 물론 일본인 중국인 등 아시아인들이 해변에 나와 대화를 나누거나 운동 기구가 있는 곳에서 운동한다거나 서구인들처럼 여유롭게 모래사장이나 노변에 앉아서 서로 담소(談笑)를 나누며 웃고 즐기는 모습을 본 적이 없기 때문이다. 그렇다고 동양인의 여행자 수가 적은 것도 아니다. 어쨌든 이런 현상은 개인적 취향 혹은 집단적 문화 현상일 수도 있겠다.

더 놀라운 것은 이곳 해변에는 휠체어를 탄 장애인(障礙人)들도 많다는 것이다. 물론 모두 서구인들이다. 그러나 그들은 전혀 불편한 기색 없이 자연을 즐기고 대화를 즐겼다. 그런 모습에서 역시 서구인들은 어느 모로 보나 더 개방적이고 모험적이고 낙천적이었다. 내가 만난 한 사람은 독일인이고 또 다른 한 명은 핀란드인이었다. 핀란드인은 무릎 관절이 고장 나 인공관절로 대체했는데 그게 신통치 않아서 여전히 휠체어 신세를 지고 있다고 했다. 독일인은 교통사고로 한 다리를 잃었다. 그는 의족(義足)을 착용한 체 휠체어를 타고 다니며 마음껏 여행을 즐겼다. <계속>

People met on my backpacking 201 - people who enjoy travelling in wheelchairs

I think every six months, a large number of Westerners vacation in Pattaya, Thailand. I see them almost everyday at the beach. But I've never seen Asians, including Chinese, Japanese, and Koreans, converse or work out together on the beach or at a facility equipped with exercise equipment. Furthermore, unlike their Western counterparts, I've never seen them idly sit on the beach or by the side of the road, laughing and conversing. In any case, I believed that this occurrence was a result of the cultural gap between the West and the East.

What surprised me the most was the number of handicapped persons in wheelchairs on the beach. Of course, they're all Westerners. They did not appear to be uncomfortable as they enjoyed nature and discussion. In this regard, Westerners are widely perceived to be more open, adventurous, and optimistic. One individual I met was German, while the other was Finnish. The Finnish said he had a shattered knee joint and had replaced it with an artificial joint, but it was not functional, thus he remained in a wheelchair. In a vehicle accident, the German lost one of his legs. He seemed to enjoy his vacation while traveling in a wheelchair with a prosthetic limb.
