- 영원한 스타들, 험프리 보가트와 잉그리드 버그먼 -

오늘은 그 유명한 ‘바 카사블랑카’(릭스카페 어메리컨)에 가봐야겠다. 이곳은 영화 '카사블랑카'에 등장하는 그 바(bar)의 이름을 그대로 재현(再現)시켜 놓은 곳이다. 영화에 등장하는 소품 등이 그렇다. 샘이 As time goes by를 부르며 쳤던 피아노도 그대로다. 물론 이 영화를 촬영한 곳은 카사블랑카가 아니라 미국 할리우드에서다. 'Bar Casablanca'는 시내의 하얏트 리전시 일층에 있다.

내가 묵고 있는 호스텔에서 그리 멀지 않다. 약간 들뜬 기분으로 한 걸음 한 걸음 좁혀갔다. 드디어 도착. Bar의 문을 열고 들어서니 실내는 좀 휑한 느낌을 줬다. 아직 이른 시간이라 그런 모양이다. 잠시 기분을 싸잡고 주위를 둘러보니 역시 영화에서 보았던 그런 분위기가 살아 있었다. 배우들의 대형(大形) 사진들과 구석마다 놓인 바바리 코트와 모자걸이 그리고 피아노 등이 그러했다.

종업원이 다가와 커피 주문을 받았다. 잠시 후 그는 커피를 가져온 뒤 아예 내 옆에 붙어섰다. 그리고 계속 질문을 하기 시작했다. 어디서 왔느냐? 일본인이냐? 한국이 어디에 붙었느냐? 무엇 하는 사람이냐? 왜 혼자 배낭여행을 하느냐?…등등 이 친구도 역시 다른 모로코 사람들처럼 궁금한 게 많았다. 그래도 그렇지. 한국에 대해서 이렇게 맹탕일 수가. 은근히 화도 낳지만, 현실이 그런 걸 어떡하랴. 이는 사실이다. 세계인들과 대화를 나눠보면 의외로 한국을 모르는 자들이 많다는 걸 알 수 있다. 따라서 이 같은 질문은 수도 없이 쏟아진다<적어도 1990년대까진 그랬다. 88 서울올림픽이 있었음에도, 그만큼 한 국가의 인지도(認知度)가 국제사회에 널리 알려지는 데에는 많은 시간을 요(要)하는 것이다.>

물론 나는 가능한 한 그들의 궁금증을 다 풀어주려고 애쓴다. 아주 성실히 그리고 자세히. 그러나 한국말로는 불가능하다. 오직, 영어로만 가능하다(영어사전 필수). 세계 공통어(共通語)이기 때문이다. 결국, 영어 소통력은 세계인들과 대화를 나누기 위한 필수(必須) 도구인 셈이다. 영어를 잘하면 잘할수록 내 나라, 大韓民國을 더 많이 알릴 수 있다. 애국(愛國)이 뭐 별건가, 바로 이런 것이 애국(愛國)이지.

이 친구와 한참을 얘기하다 보니 시간이 꽤 지난 모양이다. 손님들이 하나둘 들어온다. 이 친구도 바빠졌다. 나는 커피를 다 마시고 일어섰다. 그런데 유난히 벽에 걸린 대형 미남(美男) 미녀(美女)의 사진들이 눈에 쏙 들어온다. ‘카사블랑카’의 영화 포스터와 초상화(肖像畵)들이다. 주인공은 바로 ‘험프리 보가트’와 ‘잉글릿 버그만’. 아름다운 젊은 시절(1942년)의 모습들이 아닐 수 없었다. 인생은 짧고 예술은 길다고 했던가. 인생의 무상(無常)함을 또 한 번 실감하고. 어쨌든 그들의 유명세(有名稅)는 대단하다. 특히 이곳 카사블랑카에서. 실제로 그들은 ‘카사’를 세상에 널리 알린 일등 공신(功臣)이었다.

‘카사블랑카’ 줄거리:제2차 세계대전 중, 나치가 파리를 점령 중인 상황, ‘릭’과 ‘일사’의 꿈같던 파리에서의 추억(追憶), 포성의 울림 속에서도 ‘일사’에게 ‘릭’은 포도주로 건배하며, “Here's looking at you kid!”(당신의 눈동자에 건배!)를 말한 뒤 포옹한다. 함께 파리를 떠나 ‘카사’로 가자는 약속은 ‘일사’가 결국 역(驛)에 안 나타남으로써 그곳에서 무산된다. 그 뒤 ‘릭’은 ‘카사’에서 혼자 카페를 운영한다. 어느 날 ‘릭’의 카페에 이미 잊혀진 옛 연인 ‘일사’가 자기 남편과 나타났다가 그냥 바를 나가 버린다.

그 뒤 ‘일사’는 ‘릭’에게 다시 찾아와 파리에서의 ‘릭’에 대한 사랑이 진실이었음을 말한다. ‘릭’은 이 사실을 안 뒤 다시 꿈같았던 파리의 추억을 되새기며 ‘일사’와 긴 밤을 지낸다. 그러나 ‘릭’은 ‘일사’의 남편이 ‘일사’를 진정 사랑하고 있음을 확인, 결국 ‘릭’은 자신이 진정 사랑했던 ‘일사’의 미래를 위해 그녀의 남편과 함께 미국으로 탈출시키는 데 성공한다. 진실한 사랑에는 위대한 용기와 희생이 따르는 법, 그 원동력(原動力)은 파리의 추억이었다. 그 추억은 ‘릭’과 ‘일사’가 공유(共有)한 아름다운 추억이었다. 가까운 사람과 공유할 수 있는 추억을 많이 가진 자가 결국 진정한 의미의 사랑과 삶의 가치를 구현(具顯)한다. <계속>

People met on my backpacking 100 -Casablanca-

- Great stars, Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman -

I eventually visited the famous 'Bar Casablanca' (Rikscafe American). Here, the name of the bar that appeared in the movie 'Casablanca' was reproduced as it was. The props that appeared in the movie were like that. There was also a piano that Sam played while singing As time goes by. Of course, this movie was filmed in Hollywood, USA, not Casablanca, Morocco. 'Bar Casablanca' was located on the ground floor of the Hyatt Regency downtown.

It was not too far from the hostel I was staying at. With a bit of excitement, I approached it step by step. Finally arrived. When I opened the door of the bar and entered, the interior gave me a slightly empty feeling. It seemed like it was still early. After calming myself down for a while, I looked around, and the atmosphere I saw in the movie was alive. Such were in every corner the large-scale photos of the actors, the trench coat, hat racks, and pianos placed.

A waiter came up to me and took my coffee order. After a while he brought coffee and stood right next to me. And he kept asking questions. "Where are you from? Are you Japanese? Where is Korea located? What are you doing? Why are you backpacking alone?"... etc. This guy, like other Moroccans, had a lot of questions. He knew nothing about Korea. It was true. In fact, when I spoke to people around the world, surprisingly, most of them didn't know about Korea. It was at least until the 1990s. 88 Seoul Olympics seemed not to make them know Korea enough. Maybe I thought it would take lots of time till they knew about Korea.

Of course, I tried to answer them if possible. Yes, English dictionary was big help. In a word, English was an essential tool for communicating with people from all walks of life. Of course, the better my English was, the more I could introduce my proud country, ROK to the world. Right, it was how I practice patriotism. It was easy for me to be patriotic.

I talked with this guy for a long time. This guy started his job after many of his guests came in. I finished my coffee. However, the pictures of large-sized handsome man and beautiful woman hanging on the wall caught my eye. They were movie posters and portraits of ‘Casablanca’. The main characters were Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. It was their beautiful and lively youth (1942). As the saying goes, life is short and art is long, I once again realized the impermanence of life. Anyway, their fame was great. Especially here in Casablanca. In fact, they were the first contributors to spreading ‘Casa’ to the world.

'Casablanca' Plot:

During World War II, the Nazis are occupying Paris. Create memories of the dreamy Paris of ‘Rick’ and ‘Ilsa’. Even in the midst of the roar of gunfire, Rick toasts Ilsa with wine and whispers. “Here's looking at you kid!” And he hugs Ilsa. The promise to leave Paris and go to Casa is broken there as Ilsa eventually does not appear at the station. After that, Rick runs a cafe alone at Casa. One day, a long-forgotten ex-lover, Ilsa, appears at Rick's cafe with her husband, and then go back.

After that, Ilsa comes back to Rick and tells him that her love for Rick in Paris was true. After Rick finds out about this, he spends a long night with Ilsa, recalling the dreamlike memories of Paris. However, Rick confirms that Ilsa's husband truly loves Ilsa. And he succeeds in escaping them to the United States with her husband for the future of Ilsa, whom he truly loved. True love requires great courage and sacrifice, and the driving force behind it was the memory of Paris. That memory was a beautiful memory shared by Rick and Ilsa. A person who has a lot of memories to share with those close to him finally realized the true meaning of love and the value of life.
